In Italian some nouns have both a masculine and a feminine version, especially those who indicate living beings, people, professions, animals… For instance: gatto means cat (or, more specifically, a male cat), gatta means female cat. Gatta is the feminine version of gatto. There are however words that look like they’re the masculine and feminine version of the same noun, but they have nothing to do with one another just to mess up with people The same goes for their plurals. Here’s a comprehensive list of these words, called “Falsi cambiamenti di genere” (fake gender changes):
