expedition camping

10

An *epic* second trip of the season, this time an Antarctic Classic and for me the opportunity to work as a camping and kayaking guide.

We had a beautiful sunset/sunrise camping on Orne Island in amazingly calm conditions, landed with Adelie penguins on 10m+ thick sea ice in the Weddell Sea, bashed through ice on our way to Port Lockroy (and even more ice leaving through the Neumeyer Channel), and kayaked through brash on a bluebird day in Cierva Cove. Incredible!

Do you have anymore Huntress Academy headcanons for the Ichor Group AU? :)

Of course!

•so many camping expeditions! Seniors gets to vote on where they wanna go and whatever students wanna go are able to
•there’s a student mentoring program so a senior gets paired with a freshman and 8th graders get paired with 6th graders- it’s all about making sure everyone feels like part of the group and creating an awesome school culture
•all of their organized sports are really niche like archery but pretty much the whole school shows up to support
•days when Artemis comes to visit are everyone’s favorite. Everyone just pretty much swoons over her all day and she tries to talk to every student and check in
•each floor of the dorms is named after a constellation
•the girls explore the woods around the school grounds. There’s a creek that’s a really popular hang out spot on the weekends
•the school guard dogs look super scary but can often be found whining until someone rubs their belly
•the dining hall is open 24/7 so it’s the most popular place on campus next to the library

He was pissed.

He had done everything to make sure that your date would be perfect.

He had packed the perfect picnic basket and spent a total of four hours preparing the food (with the help of his mother, of course, because he was too afraid he would ruin it).

He had picked out the perfect spot to sit at, he had styled his hair early, and he had even picked out the outfit he was going to wear the previous night.

But something just had to stop it all from being perfect, didn’t it?

Half an hour before he was supposed to pick you up from your place, it had started pouring outside, the rain obscuring almost everything in sight.

It was like he was standing within grey sheets of wetness on the street.

He ran to your house, knocking on the door like a madman as he was practically drenched, alarming you as you yanked him out of the rain and into the cozy heat of your home.

He put the wet picnic basket on your kitchen table, your mother suddenly worrying about him catching a cold as you rushed upstairs to find some of your father’s clothes for him to change into.

“What on earth were you thinking?” you asked him as soon as he’d walked out of the bathroom, all changed up. “Are you trying to get yourself sick? Here, have a towel to dry your hair.”

Patting his hair dry with the towel as he tried to avoid splotching your room like a wet dog, you could feel the heat rise in your cheeks, resisting the urge to run your fingers through his damp, glistening hair.

“What’s the matter?” he asked slyly, clearly having noticed your expression.

“Nothing important,” you lied, voice hitching an octave higher than usual.

He walked closer, the towel hanging around his neck, and then leaned in, lips right by your ear. “Are you sure about that?”

You snatched the towel and threw it at his face as you backed away, hearing him groan in protest at your decreasing proximity.

“Positive,” you replied, smirking.

“Get back here,” he laughed, easily striding up to you as he pulled you closer by the waist and leaned his forehead onto yours, dimples showing as he gave you your favorite smile.

You reached your hands up and ran them through his hair, your fingers slightly grazing his scalp, and his eyes fluttered shut as he hummed in appreciation.

“I should walk in the rain more often,” he commented, eyes still closed.

“I’d prefer it if you abstained from that.”

“Abstained? Are you auditioning for the audio version of our school textbook?” he teased, his breath ghosting on your lips as he spoke.

“Shut up, you love it,” you murmured, slightly shoving him away but to no avail. His grip was too strong. Too comforting.

Too much like home.

You let your head rest on his shoulder as he relaxed in your arms, the two of you still standing in the middle of your room.

The sound of rainfall hadn’t stopped yet, and he groaned again.

“I can’t believe the weather decided to ruin our first official date,” he voiced out, complaining.

“It could have been worse,” you mused, “it could have started raining while we were on our date.”

He stood still for a few seconds before you felt him nod. “That’s fair, actually.”

“Would a lazy day with hot chocolate and marshmallows in a blanket fort make up for the lost picnic date?” you asked, smiling at him.

“I even brought the picnic basket, at least our little camping expedition has food ready,” he grinned back.

You rolled your eyes. “It’s not an expedition if you never leave the house.”

“Let a man dream,” he playfully nudged you, already heading towards your bed so he could start setting up the fort.

“I’ll go make us the cocoa and bring up the marshmallows and picnic basket,” you said when you were almost out the door.

“I’ll be here setting camp,” he replied cheerfully, already busy propping up the first of the pillows.

“There’s more of those in the closet to your left, if you need them,” you laughed as you headed downstairs, practically jumping them three at a time.

It took about ten minutes to get everything ready, and you went back upstairs to find him sitting in your already made fort, curtains swept aside as he watched the rain continue to fall mercilessly.

You set the food on your bedside table and handed him a mug while you tossed the sealed bag of marshmallows onto your soft bed covers, climbing next to him carefully with your own cup of cocoa.

And time seemed to pass too quickly.

Your laughter never ceased, you almost had a food fight, and in the end you ended up cuddling in the pale light filtering through the window as the two of you continued to gaze at the showering rain.

You were lying down on his chest, his heart thumping rhythmically against your ear as you reveled in the warmth of your ‘camp’.

“You know,” he started, and you could hear the smile in his voice, “I wonder how many other people have this.”

You smiled in response although he could not see you, answering him quizzically. “What do you mean by this?”

“The feeling that I have right now,” he started, sighing complacently, “it’s like everything’s finally right in this world. Does that make any sense? I don’t think I’m making any sense.”

His laughter was like music, and you felt it reverberate through you as he laughed with you lying on top of him, listening to him be alive.

“People do have this feeling, too. It makes perfect sense to me. It’s how I feel whenever I’m with you,” you answered a minute or two later, looking up to meet his eyes.

His gaze held a question that only you could have ever known to answer, and you slowly lifted yourself and leaned up until your lips pressed against his, slowing time and space around you.

He smiled into the kiss and you sighed, making him smile even wider.

You leaned away and let your eyes open, but his were still shut as he held the happiest look you’d ever seen on his face.

Smiling, you kissed the tip of his nose as you felt him begin to chuckle.

Slowly opening his eyes, he grinned at you before suddenly lifting himself and pecking you out of nowhere, surprising you and making himself laugh again.

“I could get used to this,” you commented, beginning to grin to yourself.

“I don’t think I ever could,” he said as his dimples resurfaced, and he leaned back in for another kiss.

The rain didn’t always ruin everything, after all.
