Barber, who specialized in realistic, tender portraits of adults and children with dogs, was educated at London’s Academy Schools. He was commissioned to paint Queen Victoria’s favorite dogs for almost 25 years. He also painted other royal canines, illustrated children’s books and dabbled in photography. He was a frequent Royal Academy exhibitor.
