I grew up surrounded by words, quite
literally. By the time I was six months old my parents had taped words
to every surface in the house, so the walls said “wall” the window said
“window” and so on so forth. I still don’t know how they managed to get
the cat involved but some things are meant to be wondered at.
But for the next six years the world was covered in words, as first I learned to read, and then my brother. I dare say if you move some furniture in my parents house to this day you will find a faded piece of paper that says “shelf” or “bookcase” on it. It was a sad day when they were taken down, they were like old friends. But by then the magic had already worked. I was able to look at the world and see words, whether they were printed there or not.
was four when I sat down to consciously write my first story. I remember
it vividly because I had my bright yellow Cadburys Caramel mug, that
had the purple flowing font on the side with the bunny rabbit lady
on it. It was filled with “baby tea”— mostly hot milk with a splash
of tea from the pot to give it color— and I was holding it in both hands, sitting at the
little “art” table dad had built for me in the corner so I had a place
to sit and scribble that wasn’t the walls. Contemplating my next masterpiece I looked around the room for inspiration. Would it be an exploration of color through pinky finger painting only? Or would it be the greatest macaroni interpretation of a dog we’d ever seen? Sadly we’ll never know how this might have worked out, as at that very moment, mum came in holding a crystal mobile and hung it up on the window sill. This in turn had the effect of creating a living, dancing rainbow in the living room, and something in my brain short fused.
That was the day I learned the word “iridescent”. It was like learning the language of angels.
After that I was always scribbling something. My school books were a mess of words, crammed into margins and on back pages. I was always in trouble for letting my mind “wander into whimsy.” Once I got a report card that said “fantastical leanings towards flights of fancy.” It was meant as criticism, but dad still has it framed in the office.
Then there came the time a few years later when I was reading the Hobbit with dad, and I turned to him quite seriously and asked “where are all the girl hobbits?” and dad hemmed and hawed before eventually telling me “they’re in another book, darling…having their own adventure…” and I accepted this and settled back down to let him finish the chapter. He probably thought I forgot about it until that weekend I marched up to the Librarian and asked for “the girl hobbit book please”, which was met with much confusion and my dad rushing over to tell me they probably wouldn’t have it yet because it was very rare. A few weeks later, dad handed me something. It was sheaves of paper bound together by string. It was, he told me, a very exclusive copy of the girl hobbit book.
I still have it somewhere, back home. Probably on a shelf somewhere that still says “shelf”.
And sweet, naive thing that I was, I believed him. It wasn’t until later on and someone else popped my bubble, that I realized dad, not Tolkien, had written it. And oh I was furious, furious because the story had been so good and because dad had lied about not writing it himself. But that small bubbling anger was nothing compared to the heat inside my brain when my dad confessed he’d tried without much success to find books I might like with girls in them. All the heroes were boys, you see. It made me quite tearful actually, that no one had ever thought that someone like me could go off on an adventure and save the world, when I knew it to be a blatant lie. Old Mrs McDougall across the street had been a land girl and saved a man shot down from his spitfire. Mrs Mitchell had been the emergency coordinator and saved people from burning buildings when the Nazis bombed the shipyards, and her skin was all bubbled and tightly pulled across the left side of her face because of it and her hands didn’t quite work because she’d gripped burning metal to try and free the men inside. Those, were heroes. But we never learned about them at school. We only learned about kings and tyrants and the kind of heavily filtered history that lead you to believe that women were in there somewhere, but only in the same sense that a wall has paint on it.
And now my books, my lovely wonderful books, where you could travel through space and time or climb up volcanoes to throw rings inside and save the world…those wonderful colorful worlds that spoke the language of angels, were just the same.
I was ready to cry and be defeated about it until dad, raising his eyebrows at me and offering me a notebook, said, “well, maybe someone ought to write one.”
And you likely know the rest by now. But in short I write because there are stories to be told. I write because it’s the closest I’ll ever be to how the word iridescent feels. I look at the world and I see words, dancing like rainbows, singing like angels.
There’s words everywhere. I’m just scribbling them down.
i can’t believe that the last time we saw jake physically put his hands on amy while they kissed was in yippee kayak that was a whole season and a half ago MAN PUT YOUR DAMN HANDS ON YOUR WOMAN U BETTER HOLD HER LIKE THERE’S NO TOMORROW U BITCH ASS
This is not strictly sapphic, but important nonetheless:
Regardless of the nuances of your identity as a girl/woman/woman aligned individual, there’s an enormous amount of pressure to love, have sex with, and be with men. That does not, of course, mean that this pressure manifests the same way for all girls. However, I think we can all agree that no girl is completely immune to these societal pressures.
You are under no obligation to be with men. You are under no obligation to date, have sex with, marry, kiss, commit to, or hold any kind of relationship with men you do not wish to have. You do not owe specific men this, and you do not owe this to men as a class, either. If you do these things, it should be because you want to, not because you “should”.
It doesn’t matter how many men you’ve been with in the past. It doesn’t matter if you’re attracted to men, even if you’re strongly attracted to them. It doesn’t matter if you want these things in theory. You are in charge of your relationships, and what you want out of them. Ideally, you should not pursue anything unless you are sure you want it, and it should be done at your own pace (and if your own pace is “never”, that’s fine too.)
To lesbians and gay women, only wanting relationships with other women/women aligned folk is great! You are not “close minded” for being disinterested in men. Even if at one point you thought you were attracted to men, there is no issue with leaving this in the past and embracing your identity. I wish you luck in you seeking out relationships with women (at your own pace).
To bi, pan, polysexual, and otherwise multi gender attracted women, you do not need to “prove” that you’re attracted to multiple genders with your dating history. If you’d rather avoid being with men right now (or ever) this is fine, even if you’re attracted to them. You have every right to focus on your relationships with women and/or non-binary people, or to avoid relationships in general if you so choose. Your sexuality should not be defined as “available to men” by anyone - you have autonomy! Even if you pursue men, your “availability” is determined by you rather than inherently implied by your sexuality.
To trans women, gatekeepers might say you’re not “real” unless you are exclusively interested in men and seek out relationships with them. This could not be more false! You are no less trans, and no less of a woman, than trans women who fit under the typical trans narrative. Like cis women, you should feel free to date someone of any gender you choose, or nobody at all if you’d prefer. No doctor should deny you the opportunity to medically transition because your sexuality falls outside what they consider “legitimate”.
To asexual women, despite societal pressure to find a man and be a “good girlfriend” to him by pleasing him sexually, there is nothing wrong with your lack of sexual attraction. Ace or not, no man (or person in general) should pressure you into sexual acts you’re uncomfortable with. There is also nothing wrong with seeking out romantic relationships without a sexual component. Communication is key, and if it’s what you desire, I hope you eventually find a relationship that suits your needs.
To aromantic women, I know it seems that all sorts of media pushes the idea that there is nothing more fulfilling than romantic love with a man. However, if romantic love isn’t your thing, you have every right to avoid it. And if you desire sex but not romance, then there is nothing wrong with seeking that out with partners you’ve communicated your desires to.
To straight women, you are not excluded from this message! You still deserve happiness and fulfillment in your relationships, and more importantly, you should not feel pressured to settle for the first half decent man that comes along. Your relationships with men should be done at your own pace. If this means you hit some milestones late, or never, then there’s nothing wrong with that. Just remember that not all girls are exclusively attracted to men like you are (and some aren’t attracted to men at all)! Respect their choices as well.
To questioning women, I hope you someday find a label that resonates with you, but don’t beat yourself up if it doesn’t happen right away (or ever). The process of questioning should be done at your own pace. Don’t feel like you have to rush to figure out a label, or force yourself to do anything you’re uncomfortable with just to speed along the process of finding yourself. Maybe you’re attracted to men. Maybe you aren’t. Maybe you’ll never be completely sure. You’re valid nonetheless.
To women who fit under more than one of these labels, or another label altogether, there’s nothing wrong with your identity being more complicated than some are used to. Like everyone else, you should be allowed to pursue relationships at your own pace, with whoever you feel comfortable with - and if that includes men, I hope this is because you want to and not because of outside pressure!
girls who are exclusively attracted to other girls but are afriad of using the word “lesbian” to describe themselves are valid. it’s a word that has become so synonymous with being dirty or pornographic that using it can be daunting, but it’s okay to take your time before using it as an identifier. youre not dirty for your attraction to girls. you’re not fake for being uncomfortable with saying lesbian. take your time. it’s okay.
Lance’s phone toppled to the floor of the cockpit as he sprinted for the exit. Fiery adrenaline coursed through his veins and his heartbeat pounded in his ears - a steady thrum of “Keith, Keith, Keith”.
He rounded corner after corner, firing his rifle blindly and taking out galra drones left and right before finally (and impatiently) arriving at his destination.
As his weapon fired one last blast into the lock, he swung open the door and was surprised to find Keith sitting unceremoniously in the middle of the room. Darkness surrounded him and he was tied down, but when his eyes met Lance’s, a handful of emotions flooded his expression; shock, fear, hope, dread, each one seamlessly right after the other.
“Lance!” Keith cried, the shackles on his wrists clanked as they stopped him from reaching out. “Oh god, please leave… Lotor will -”
Lance wordlessly stomped across the room and planted his feet on either side of Keith’s before protectively holding the red paladin’s face between his hands. Bruises painted the pale skin of Keith’s face and he flinched when Lance reached out to him. He looked so… different. Lance could’ve gone his whole life without seeing Keith look as frail and defenseless as he did then.
“Forget about him, alright? I’m getting you out of here.”
“Y-you found me…” Keith stuttered out, leaning carefully into Lance’s touch.
“Of course I did, Mullet.” Lance smirked before shifting forward and pressing a possessive kiss into Keith’s forehead, “I love you. I’m saving you.”
A small smile played across Keith’s lips and Lance’s heart fluttered at the thought of getting his teammate back to safety in the castle ship. He couldn’t stop himself from smiling back and brushing a gentle thumb across a pale cheekbone but just when he started to forget where they were and why, Keith’s dark eyes darted past Lance’s gaze and fear replaced all the positive emotions the blue paladin had managed to coax out.
“Say cheese,” The shutter of an iPhone camera clicked, accompanying a sickeningly smooth voice that Lance knew belonged to Lotor without even looking. He turned and stood instantly, trying his best to shield Keith’s body with his own.
Remembering that his helmet was still functional, Lance jumped
at the opportunity to alert the others as to where they were (which in
hindsight he should’ve done right away but he’d yell at himself for that later).
“Guys! I found Keith! We’re in the room past the –” Lance’s
words jolted to an involuntary stop and his teeth rattled in his head at the unexpected
impact. When had he fallen to the floor?
It had all happened so fast. He spat out blood and looked up to see Lotor
standing above him, fists drawn.
“You really think
I’d let you finish that sentence?” Lotor laughed, smirking evilly down at the
blue paladin. Lance hated making eye contact with him, especially when he’d
finally had the privilege of seeing Keith again; he never wanted to look at
anyone else. His eyes avoided his aggressor’s gaze and darted up to his teammate
Keith’s face was contorted in pure fear - something Lance had never witnessed before and never wanted to again. This was Keith, for god’s sake. Strong, stubborn, fearless Keith; the red paladin, known for always charging into dangerous situations without a second thought because he was crazy and hotheaded and lacked foresight. The memory of that Keith filled Lance’s entire being and fueled him to push forward.
He sprung off the ground with newfound determination and managed to pin the unsuspecting Lotor down on his back. Lance hovered above him, glaring angrily down at the galran prince.
“It’s quite pathetic, really,” Lotor began with a smile before Lance could get out any of the furious words his mouth considered, “He was so passionate and tenacious when he first arrived… But I showed him your messages everyday and he lost determination rather quickly.”
Lance’s arms were busy holding the prince down, so the rage that consumed him had nowhere else to escape but through a powerful headbutt (that he regretted almost instantly). He saw stars.
“Lance!” Keith screamed, but Lotor was already up off the ground and stalking across the room in Keith’s direction. Keith tried his best to avoid looking at Lotor; he’d learned over the last few weeks that that was the best course of action when trying to avoid making the prince angry.
Lotor reached out a hand and gripped the red paladin’s throat roughly, cutting off Keith’s breathing as quickly as he could. Keith trained his eyes on Lance, hoping that if he didn’t make it, at least he’d die looking at the person he loved. The edges of his vision darkened and he stayed silent - he knew Lotor was saying something to him, but he ignored him and kept watching Lance.
He would be okay as long as he could see Lance, and in that moment he could.
He saw Lance sit up. He saw Lance reach for his blaster. He saw Lance aim and he saw Lotor fall to the ground. The last thing he saw before slipping into unconsciousness was Lance running to his side.
When Keith fell out of the healing pod, the first thing he saw was Lance.
Lance caught him and smiled down at him with that sparkly smile he used to use exclusively on pretty girls while crooning things like “Hellooo gorgeous, the name’s Lance” and snapping finger guns in their direction. Keith chuckled at the memory and smiled back, earning a bright red blush from Lance.
“Thank you, L-” But the blue paladin wasn’t nearly patient enough to let him finish. His lips found Keith’s and didn’t let go until they both gasped for air.
When they pulled apart, the other members of their team had long since left the room to give them more privacy and the smile shared between them was equal parts unsteady and elated.
“Thank you for saving me,” Lance whispered into the dark hair above Keith’s ear. The red paladin jumped back in reply and quirked a confused eyebrow in Lance’s direction.
“B-but… You saved me…?”
“You have no idea how many times I almost gave up… Or how close I was to believing the others when they insisted you must be dead, Keith. I couldn’t eat or sleep or… anything. When you texted me back, you saved me. You brought me back and gave me a reason to fight again… So, thank you.”
Keith forced out a small laugh to cover the emotion stuck in his throat; he threaded his fingers into the hair at the base of Lance’s neck and pulled him in for another kiss. He stopped just before their lips met and looked directly into Lance’s deep blue eyes with a genuine smile.
