Trivia of Unova Avatars’ Creation

I’ve finished the regular Pokemon, and am about to start the home stretch - the Legends of Unova! I figured this transition would be a good time to share some insights from the artist as I’m reaching the end of this project

  • Samurott was the first avatar made of the set
  • Lilligant was the second
  • The set was started in June of 2015
  • I use an ancient vector-based freeware drawing program called Expression 3 from 2003
  • Each avatar takes between 20~40 minutes to several hours
  • The colors are directly sampled from the sprites found in Pokémon Black and Pokémon White. I wanted to preserve the feel of the monsters as they first appeared in those games, since some colors have become less vibrant or more “safe” in the transition to the 3DS games
  • The evolutionary line of Electross gave me severe art block, it took me two and a half weeks of at least four revisions each before I settled on designs for them
  • I’m very proud of the Reuniclus line. Their squishy bodies are semi-transparent for the clear avatars, but appears to be the same green as the opague avatars when they’re against a white background. I used linear algebra to calculate exactly what RGB colors would be needed at the desired transparency to achieve this effect. It was a fun easter egg to work on I’m sure no one noticed
  • Musharna is the only design I made that had no transparency, which prompted me to make her sleeping versions. I kind of regret it, but her eyes are so outrageous they made me chuckle
  • I’ve made sets of the first four generations of Pokémon, (which I’m positively embarrassed of by now), and as a carry-over from those projects, the first 40 Unova avatars didn’t have mouths. I changed my mind eventually, and then had to go back and add them in. It was after that change in direction that I decided to make a tumblr for displaying these
  • My favorite Pokémon from Unova are Zekrom, Volcarona, Scolipede, Archen, Meinfoo, and Stunfisk

Some things I learned about the Pokemon of Unova I didn’t know before working on this project:

  • Zweilous only has one nostril on each head
  • Simisear was the least popular of ALL Pokémon in a 2016 official survey, and was given away via special distribution in Japan to make him feel better
  • Beheeyem can learn TM 51, which is now Steel Wing, likely as an oversight from when TM 51 used to be Ally Switch
  • The color of Audino’s nurse hat is different in every episode of the anime

UM.

SO I JUST GOT A SHINY CHIKORITA THROUGH WONDER TRADE.

F UCKING WONDER TRADE.

Bonds of Evolution Series: Rockruff & Lycanroc (Midday Form)

I wanted to try something new that combined inks, a 2-colour palette, and pokemon evolution; what better way to start off a new series of works than with Rockruff and Lycanroc, whose evolutionary line depends entirely on which version of Sun and Moon you play?

SUNMOON POKEDDEX DAY 5 - Favourite Dark Type: Incineroar

Generation 7 wasn’t all that generous with dark types so there wasn’t much to choose from. I knew I wanted to draw Incineroar despite it not being a favourite so this is the category I put it in. Many people, me included, seemed to be rather upset that Litten became what it did. Personally I kinda do like the concept and the design is not bad atl all - overall it’s a pretty solid evolutionary line - but it was still disappointing to see GameFreak go for another bipedal fire starter final evolution.

I think this design would’ve worked fine as quad or semi-quad like I did here. Well, despite that I would still rather not see Incineroar portrayed as a quadruped Pokemon, but rather deal with the design you have at hand. So I figured Incineroar can move and mostly does move on all fours but for example in fights it stands up on two legs as to intimidate its opponent. I didn’t want to go with full feline anatomy because I wanted both the quad bipedal stances and switching from one to another seem quite natural.

Huevember Day 21: Primarina

I actually really like Primarina’s design, even more so than Decidueye’s (who I chose as my starter)!

When the starters were first revealed I was immediately on Team Litten and I thought Popplio was pretty bleh, but Game Freak kind of ruined Litten’s entire evolutionary line for me once the final forms were officially out. I turned right around and joined Team Rowlet and Team Popplio

Game Freak, please stop turning all the fire type starters into bipedal human-like fighting/pseudo-fighting types :(

The Three Species of Gigantopithecus

Though so little fossil remains have been found of Gigantopithecus, enough variation has been seen to classify them into three different species.

The species we know the most about it is Gigantopithecus blacki. The teeth found that were thought to be dragon bones were classified as Gigantopithecus blacki. Through dating the teeth, scientists believe that this species existed for at least one million years. It was believed to be related to the early human Australopithecus. It was later determined the two emerged through convergent evolution, or when similar features develop simultaneously through separate evolutionary lines.

The next species is Gigantopithecus bilaspurensis. Fossils of this species have been found in India. It is believed to have lived about six to nine million years ago.

The final species is Gigantopithecus giganteus. Despite its name, it was half the size of Gigantopithecus blacki, which is the species the height average of ten feet is based off of. This species has the least amount of fossil records, found in India and China.
