TNT: Evilution finally gets a Nightmare speedrun!

Does it deserve recognition, you may ask? Well, the answer is yes, it does! You don’t see a twenty-year old record being broken every now and then, after all!

Speedrunning a game like DOOM is already a feat, taking into account that nearly everything is randomized, the damage you take, the damage you may inflict, the way the monsters walk and attack, etc. Now add the fact that you’re running the game under a (mostly) bullshit difficulty.

People should be aware that Nightmare difficulty actually meant something back in the day. These days it became just another “Harder/NewGame+” difficulty in the new DOOM and it kind of lost its magic during that transition. Not even the so-touted Ultra Nightmare can compare. Nightmare is not fair. The game straight up tells you that before you start a new game in any classic DOOM IWAD. Some enemies shoot faster, enemy projectiles fly faster, other enemies who are below average turn into an actual threat. And the big one: enemies can and will respawn. Nightmare wasn’t meant to be fair.

But here comes Zero-Master to break DOOM records again. People have speedran TNT: Evilution before, even on Nightmare, but nobody (until two days ago) could play the entire IWAD from MAP01 to MAP30 in one sitting on Nightmare difficulty.

The record now stands on 1:23:37, but I don’t think it’ll last for too long…

favorite hotch moments: no way out, part II: the evilution of frank (2.23)
My team? Let me tell you about my team. Agent Morgan fought to protect his identity from the very people who could save him - why? Because trust has to be earned, and there are very few people he truly trusts. Reid’s intellect is a shield which protects him from his emotions and at the moment his shield is under repair. Prentiss overcompensates because she doesn’t yet feel she’s a part of the team. She needn’t worry. Every day, agent Jareau fields dozens of requests for our team. And every night she goes home hoping she’s made the right choices. Garcia fills her office with figurines and color to remind herself to smile as the horror fills her screens. And agent Gideon, in many ways, is damned by his profound knowledge of others. Which is why he shares so little of himself, yet he pours his heart into every case we handle.

Okay, I’m afraid that this one is going to hurt. A lot.

Longtime /idgames maintainer and member of TeamTNT, Ty Halderman, has been reported to be deceased as of July 31st, according to a close relative who just registered to Doomworld recently to confirm these sad news, after months of not knowing his whereabouts and an uncomfortable suspension of WAD uploading to the archives.

Ty Halderman was undoubtedly the reason why the /idgames archive that holds over 20 years of custom Doom levels and modifications has been standing up to these days. He was a member of TeamTNT and contributed to TNT: Evilution from the Final Doom package from the mid-90s, as well as other levels, and was also one of the main programmers behind Boom, one of the most well-known Doom source-ports and kickstarter of one of Doom’s most used level formats to date.

The work he did for the Doom community is immeasurable, and his loss, devastating. This blog joins Doomworld’s public message and offers its condolences to Ty Halderman’s family and friends. It should be duly noted that while people were awaiting confirmation about Ty’s whereabouts and medical condition, two long-time members of the community, Bloodshedder and The Green Herring, were appointed to be the newest (and, at the time, temporary) maintainers of the /idgames archive, but it’s no secret that Mr. Halderman will never be replaced and will truly be mised.

Rest in Power, Ty Halderman

via Instagram’s @timetoclimb - Life takes us to some extraordinary places, many times it is those that we meet along the way that make it the most memorable. Whether we make a new friend or meet a complete stranger we are cheering on from a distance, we connect with others through a mutual passion. When we share our struggles with others, we realize our struggle is not our own, that we are not alone.
