everyone else was already doing it

“Transformation is not a parlor trick”, the old star always lectured his student. But with everyone else doing it… aw heck. Even the ancient Celestian could afford a bit of his excess stardust to cut loose once in a while!

little system things we wake up in the wee hours. amelie is fronting. she slowly puts on a shirt cause it’s gotten cold. she wonders why we’re awake now. she hears soft megalovania in headspace. sans and toxin are sitting together on the floor, playing a beat em up together on the headspace tv. “sans, why are you awake,” she asks, and he just blinks. “having a bad time,” he mutters, hands in pocket, moving the controller with his eye psychics. toxin mushes buttons next to him. everyone forgets sans is a trauma holder and he’s just used to it. toxin slumps against his shoulder and mumbles something. amelie blinks, and readies the irl blankets for sleep. she already feels like she’s dreaming, why question what everyone else is doing

let’s talk about

everyone loves this moment and I do to.  It’s perfectly delivered, perfectly set up and its a perfect conclusion to this whole jailbreak.  Lance gets his chance to shine and save the day.  So - can talk about the fact that - Shiro lets him.

I’ve already talked about how, if shit suddenly hits the fan, Shiro’s first response is action.  Someone else talked in their post about how he tends to leap in ahead of the others, even when one of the others might be more suited, simply because he has a meat-shield complex.  This is a split second moment.  They’ve got a chance for one attempt and one alone and if it fails, they’re going to have to go back in and do this the very, very hard way.  Shiro sees what’s happening.  He has a jet pack.  He’s capable of reacting and throwing himself into things and its his nature to.  But.

But Lance says he’s got this - and Shiro stays put.  Let’s talk about the level of trust in Lance, the level of faith in Lance’s competency, the fact that Shiro listens to Lance and accepts his assessment that this moment holds.  They’ve got one chance to do this right - and Shiro trusts Lance enough to let him take that chance.  He does it without a seconds hesitation.  He doesn’t say ‘are you sure?’, he doesn’t head back in in case Lance misses.  He stays put and let’s Lance do his thing, no backup plan or safety net in place.  No matter how Lance may see himself, Shiro very obviously proves here that he sees Lance as a competent and important part of the team and trusts him and his judgement in a time of crisis without hesitation.  Can we please put to rest the fanon interpretation that Shiro ignores or belittles Lance’s place as a member of Team Voltron.  Shiro listened to Lances judgement call and trusted him to make it.

okay but lets talk abt how easy it is to abuse psychotic people, esp if youre nonpsychotic. ppl know that clustered ppl are easier to abuse but no one mentions those on the psychosis-spec when honestly, its a big deal.

it is so easy to gaslight us, because our perceptions of reality are already warped anyway. so when someone makes us doubt, we will believe them (even with actual proof of the opposite sometimes), because we cannot trust ourselves.

when we trust you, its so easy to make us dependent on you? its so easy to tell us youll keep us safe, and that the bad things youre doing are to help us.

you can so easily feed into our delusions, either by making us distrust everyone else (esp if were paranoid) or to make us trust you more, or just to get a good old laugh.

making us believe were hallucinating when were not, purposefully twisting our words when were disorganised, making us depend on you for a check on reality, telling us you know whats best for us bc our psychosis will make us cope in “bad” ways, ignoring what we tell you, blaming our reactions on our psychosis, making us seem irrational, threatening to hospitalise us because people will definitely believe you when you say were dangerous, there is so much more which nonpsychotic people do that no one talks about.

but most importantly:

you can excuse your abuse, make others believe youre in the right, because we wouldnt know whats best for us, right? no one would believe us when they know were psychotic, and thats so easy to take advantage of.

people really have to look out more for psychotic people that are being abused, and trust their words over their abuser’s

(please spread the word also if youre nonpsychotic)

I just wanna give a shoutout to all those kids that grew up brilliant, but mental illness got in the way.

All those kids who struggled with depression and had a hard time doing their schoolwork, but who were so smart they could have gotten those A’s.

All the kids who had bi polar disorder.

Who had mood swings.

Who had schizophrenia or MDD or anything else.

Everyone else might have told you to just try harder, but I know you were already doing your best. You were fighting.

Good job. I’m proud of you. Never stop fighting. Your mental illness does not make you stupid. It never will.

hi guys!! i just wrapped up my first semester in college (thank the Lord), so i thought i should share some of the things i’ve learned with you.

  • make friends during the first few weeks!!
    • participate in all the “welcome week” activities. step outside of your comfort zone and be willing to talk to anyone and everyone—everyone else is in the same position as you. find friends who have similar values as you. do not become too close with anyone who will influence you to do things that you do not want to do. befriend the people you sit next to in class—maybe they can become a study buddy. establish your friendships early on. from personal experience, it is harder to befriend people who have already formed their own friend groups.
  • join clubs!!
    • join them early on in the semester.
    • join clubs that are specific to your major! not only will you meet people with similar interests and career goals, but you will also receive important information (opportunities, research programs, etc.) and get more hands-on experience.
    • if you are on a pre-professional track, join a club based on your program. i’m currently in the pre-dental health society club at my school!
    • join any club that interests you, but try not to join clubs that frequently overlap—it is better to attend clubs faithfully than sporadically.
    • if you’re a person of faith, join a (or several) campus ministry/group to get connected with people who share your same faith. a majority of my friendships have come from doing this and it’s like having a second family. if you’re a christian, join cru!! cru is awesome!!!!
  • scheduling
    • only take 8 am’s if you are disciplined enough to go to sleep at a reasonable time and to wake up at or before 7 am.
    • try to end your school day relatively early so that you have the rest of the day to do any studying that you have to do, while you’re still awake and alert.
    • try to avoid night classes as they are very long and will probably interfere with a billion other things you want to do.
    • if you are scheduling back-to-back classes, make sure you have enough time to get from one class to the other.
  • coursework
    • exams are so important in college. there is homework, though, but it usually only accounts for a small percentage of your grade. you should still complete it. all of it. try to accumulate as many points as you can from homework and other assignments in case you don’t perform as well as you wish on the exams.
  • time-management is SOOO important!!
    • learn when to say no to social events. you can still do fun things, but know when you should refrain from it.
    • managing time wisely significantly lowers academic-related stress.
    • create a skeletal schedule for your week–add your classes, when you want to wake up/go to sleep, any club meetings that you have, what time’s a good time for lunch, etc.
    • determine what times work best in your schedule to dedicate to studying.
    • schedule your free time so that 1. you have something to look forward to and are less likely to get distracted, and, 2. you can take a break from everything and feel refreshed.
  • dealing with professors
    • respect them (obviously).
    • form good relationships with your professors, but, for the love of God, do not be a kiss up. they can tell when you are or aren’t being genuine.
    • visit them during office hours for any questions you may have. make it known to them that you do care about what you’re learning and that you’re not only trying to get an A.
  • reminders!!
    • sometimes you will try so hard and your grade will still not reflect the effort you put in.
    • learning > grades
    • grades do not always reflect intelligence. sometimes, a lower grade could be a result of something else, such as poor time-management.
    • your GPA does not define you.
    • you are here to learn.
    • rest!!
    • you can do this!!
    • i love you!!

DM(me): Okay Dynas it’s your turn, are you going to go over the wall or continue being a living Dragonborn catapult?

Dragonborn Barbarian: Well I’m…..

Catfolk Sorcerer #1: -starts chuckling- Cat-a-pult!

Everyone else: -laughs-

Dragonborn Barbarian: yeah…I’m gonna continue doing that.

  • Me: "I've read the books, I've gone to the conventions, I've watched this series at least 20 times through. I've researched the history of LGBT represention in media and the BBC specifically. I know the inspiration behind Gatiss' and Moffat's interpretation of Doyle's work. I know how Moffat has already interpreted Holmes in his other television shows. I have written a dissertation that rivals the size of The Half-Blood Prince about the history, influence, and execution of BBC Sherlock. I am extremely well-versed on this subject because I chose to put in the work required to be so. BBC Sherlock is making LGBT history in regards to representation in the media."
  • Everyone else: "Yeah, I saw BBC Sherlock once. Some episodes twice. They're not doing *that* .... but everyone is entitled to their own personal interpretation."
  • Me: "Fascinating."

elrondsscribe  asked:

Also, if functional two-handed longswords aren't heavy and require skill and control, and functional war bows require a lot of strength, then (buying into gender stereotypes for a moment) why not give the swords to the women and the bows to the men?

You’re asking me to explain gender stereotypes to you and how those stereotypes influence what we’ll call “conventional wisdom” in a way that ultimately has no relationship to reality.

It’s like asking, “if women have always fought then why do people keep insisting there were no women warriors?”

Sexism, stereotypes, and even some cultural conventions have nothing to do with reality. To begin with the premise you started with, you’re already challenging stereotypes with the idea that women have any role in combat at all. Now, you’re asking “why aren’t women front line combatants while men are relegated to artillery?”

That’s hitting the ground running when everyone else is still up on the helicopter wondering if women can even make the jump. When most people are wondering whether it’s possible for women to fight at all, despite a large bevy of historic women who’ve bucked the trend. This is a subject on which PhD research papers are built, exploring social mores, conventions, gender roles, and stereotypes handed down to us century by century that insist women have no role in combat at all, that war and combat are “men’s work”, to be glorified for men by men and men alone.

So, why would the sword, which is a symbol of leadership, kingship, and heroes, be given to a woman?

We live in a culture that can barely acknowledge women have different body types, that their bodies are influenced and changed by the kind of exercise they engage in. We live in a culture that fights tooth and nail against taking female sports professionals seriously. We live in a culture where women being forced to register for the draft is up for debate, and large swaths would prefer they didn’t. We live in a culture where plenty of girls still see recreational martial arts as not for them, not because they don’t want to, but because they think they can’t do it.

Now, you’re here arguing for the fiction because that’s what’s been presented by the vast majority of media and culture as true.

Consider the number of female professionals and enthusiasts today, from the army to the police to the martial artists to the traditional fencers to the HEMA fencers. There has and always will be a strong interest by women in the combat arts. However, cultural perceptions and acceptability will also always be a factor. To ask the question you did is to both overlook the pervasive nature of sexism and disregard its normalization by buying into the idea that “if this is true then we’d see widespread evidence of it” without bothering to look. To overlook misinformation. To overlook gender bias. To ignore the fact that female contributions to history are, by and large, routinely ignored.

We live in a culture that can barely acknowledge women have different body types. We live in a culture where a vast number of women become disillusioned with working out because they were never taught muscle weighs more than fat. That weight gain is a natural first step to a work out because their bodies are building up muscle then the muscle will inevitably begin devouring the fat and they lose weight.

If one works out their upper body, consistently and constantly, whether male or female, they will develop those muscles. Drawing a bow works out the upper body as it relies on strength in the arms, shoulders, and chest muscles. This will lead to a much thicker upper body and strong shoulders, which is not necessarily an appealing mental image for someone buying into cultural stereotypes about feminine beauty.

There are very few female characters who accurately represent what a women would look like after their training and often, in fiction, the feminine ideal of physical beauty is what’s chased. Wish fulfillment fantasies, generally, have little room for reality.

Assume instead that the person who is making the choice buys into the stereotypes. They’re looking for a kind of combat that is more safe, more feminine that active physical conflict. They may say they are about “female power”, but are buying into the idea that the bow is a safe, ranged weapon that requires less physical exertion/danger than a sword.

If you’re confused the stereotype is:

“Women are weak and therefore not suited to close combat. I know! I’ll give her a bow. Bows are ranged weapons, so she can kill at range, stay outside of combat without having to get her hands dirty.”

Never assume people argue from a position of knowledge, most of the time we work from a position of perception.

The sword also has the longstanding symbolic reputation as the weapon of the Chosen One in literature. So, watch writers trip over themselves to make sure certain characters never get to lay their hands on one.
