The Artemis Fowl books advocate for the environment, deal with misogyny in the workplace and the need for feminism, and has some of the best character development arcs like ever over the span of eight books. Also, there’s magic and fairies with guns and time travel and a whole lot of sarcasm and really no downside to reading them

LMAO one of my students went the fuck OFF about OUaT in class today! For like, the entire 2 hours she kept coming back to the subject. She’s ten years old, she and I have never discussed this before, and she’s the one who brought it up. Some direct quotes:

“Hook and Emma got engaged. Why did they have to get engaged?”

“Emma cries about him a lot. And they’re always together. Like in every scene they’re always together. It’s annoying!”

“Probably my least favorite character now is Emma. She used to be my favorite before she started dating Hook.”

“Once Upon a Time isn’t really Once Upon a Time anymore. It’s ‘The Emma and Hook Falling in Love Story.’ Everything is just about them.”

I shit you not. I didn’t prompt her one bit, I simply replied and agreed!

She said more that I can’t remember explicitly but this kid does NOT like Hook and CS. And she knew the ship name and random trivia which surprised me. She said something to the effect of “Emma stopped caring about everyone else besides Hook” but I can’t remember her exact words.

She also thinks the writers are cruel to Regina. She thought Robin Hood was boring but she felt bad for Regina that he died. She thinks fake Robin and the EQ are a weird match visually lol.

God I wish I could remember her whole list of grievances! I would try to steer us back to doing art and we’d be painting and then she’d start up again with “I also didn’t like it how blah blah blah.”

She thought Ingrid was cool but didn’t like that they did Frozen.

She felt that given Regina’s personality and style as the EQ she should have been more glamorous (as opposed to sensible pantsuits) in Storybrooke

She didn’t like the way they wrote or cast Ariel

She felt bad that Mulan is always a third wheel and was mad she never really got her own arc (student is half Chinese btw)

Dammit that’s all I can remember right now lol. She said she quit watching a while ago but still keeps up with what’s happening which I thought was hilarious because same.

Anyway she gave me hope that the kids watching this aren’t buying the bullshit the way the teens and tweens do. I told her I was proud of her and to keep thinking for herself!

You know what my favorite thing about 402 was? How every character had a completely legitimate point of view that made perfect sense when considered from their perspective.

The episode took great pains to lay out the pros and cons of each POV (and there were numerous pros and cons) and each character took a stance that was true to them. It makes this whole debate about who was right and who was wrong incredibly frustrating for me because they were all right and wrong and how you feel about a given character’s decisions/reactions is entirely subjective to who you align with the most.

@ship-picky said it best, we came out of that episode with a much better understanding of who the characters are and I LOVE IT.

i have color questions (sorry if you've answered these before aaa you don't have to respond): how do you keep consistent colors? like with Finn's skin, do you write down the color's code or do you use a different shade every time? also, how do you correctly adjust colors to fit lighting?

These are great questions and I totally don’t mind answering them!

1). For keeping consistent colors, my personal method is to have base skin tones (and hair tones, etc) saved in my MS color set that I have readily available, then I tie my colors together with a little bit of an overlay or screen effect, depending on what palette I’m working with. This ensures that everything is very cohesive while also making sure I don’t have to start from scratch with my basic colors every time I draw my favorite characters. Overlays are my best friend in general when it comes to coloring TBQH!

2). My best advice for adjusting colors to fit lighting is to actually think of it as “fit the lighting to your colors,” if that makes sense. I always work my lighting choices around the palette I’ve laid down, and focus on utilizing 1-3 layers of shading to create a light source (the light source really just being my base colors - I rarely do a highlight layer in my work). I use either a dark pink or dark purple as my shading color, and work it as much as I need to depending on how dramatic I want my lighting to be.

For example, take a look at how I colored this illustration:

1. Base colors

2. Shading (I used a magenta at 35%, normal setting)

3. Shading II (just very slight detailing for extra depth, magenta at 20%)

With really only 1 layer of shading I created a strong light source while also tying all my colors together! (•̀o•́)ง

These methods are the products of my own weird relationship with color, so I don’t assume that my methods will jive with you, but I’m hoping that at least seeing how I work can help answer your questions! ╰(*´︶`*)╯
