Really enjoying this Dirty Beaches EP, which soundtracks a short film by Evan
Prosofsky about the waterpark at West Edmonton Mall in Alberta, Canada — my
home province! (You can watch Waterpark on
Vimeo.) The film calmly and unjudgmentally shows
how surreal the water park fundamentally is, this huge tropical bubble in the
middle of the tawny Canadian prairie.
The soundtrack matches that wide-eyed feeling — mostly synth textures that are
luminous, but also kind of faded and quavering. This song, on the other hand,
is eerie guitar loneliness similar to the excellent “Alone at the
Danube River” from last year’s Love is the Devil. Like that song, the guitar
here is just a little out of tune — the subtle shudder between frequencies
makes the notes sound like they’re sloshing around, alone beneath the clear
bright water of the pool.
