Cinderella, or The Little Glass Slipper (Italian: Cenerentola, French: Cendrillon ou La Petite Pantoufle de verre,German: Aschenputtel), is a European folk tale embodying a myth-element of unjust oppression.
The Aarne–Thompson system classifies Cinderella as “the persecuted heroine”. The story of Rhodopis, about a Greek slave girl who marries the king of Egypt, is considered the earliest known variant of the “Cinderella” story, and many variants are known throughout the world.
Actually, I always wondered about why Dipper’s hidden. I have a feeling there is something more going on here with his name being hidden like this besides it being “embarrassing”. The only other show I can think of that has the main character’s name be a secret is Yu-Gi-Oh DM. And in that show, it was a major plot point. Knowing Alex, he’s planning something with that.
In a lot of cultures names are hidden because they hold a vast amount of power and even sometimes magical properties. Back in ancient Egypt, for example, people had multiple names, especially pharaohs and other nobles of the like. However, they believed that if one was to loose their name on a temple or grave, they cannot enter the afterlife. That’s why people tried to erase names on graves back in ancient Egypt – because they hated the person so much, they wanted to erase them forever.
In a lot of fairy lore, if you tell a fairy your name, they have the ability to have a vast amount of power over you. Sometimes you can defeat a magical being by saying their name. This is why in a lot of medieval, European folk tales names are such a huge deal like Rumpelstiltskin.
There a vast amount of more cultures that holds names dear due to the powers they believe they may posses.
Now, my theory is that part of the reason why Dipper’s name is a secret could be because it does hold some form of power. In addition, I think Bill could easily use it to his advantage.
