Zapalnya - Bulgaria

In 1965, the residents of Zapalnya were forced from their homes by the communist regime, to build a man made dam and lake. The town and neighbouring towns were soon ruined as they became submerged in the lake.

The St Ivan Rilski Church, built in 1895, is the only remaining evidence of the town, sitting partially submerged near the edge of the lake. Vegetation grows where the roof of the church, since collapsed, once was.
