The Iranian Languages

Often when I tell people that I’m learning Persian, the first response “Is that related to Arabic?” It isn’t at all, but due to the all-too-common conflation of the Islamic world with the Arabic language, people continue to think this is true.

Persian is actually Indo-European, meaning that it’s distantly related to the majority of languages in Europe rather than Arabic. To be more specific, it’s a member of the Iranian branch of IE, which is itself part of the larger Indo-Iranian branch. The other family stemming from Indo-Iranian is Indo-Aryan, which contains Hindi/Urdu, Bengali, Punjabi, and many more of the most widely-spoken languages in India.

Persian is actually the largest member of the Iranian family, with around 100 million speakers (native and non-native) and official status in 3 countries (Iran, Afghanistan, and Tajikistan respectively). The second-largest would be Pashto, spoken in Afghanistan and Pakistan and with official status in the former, with 40 million speakers. Those two and Kurdish are probably the only Iranian languages most people would have a chance of being familiar with: outside of them you have much more obscure but still just as fascinating languages like Balochi, Ossetian, Luri/Lori, the Pamir languages, and more.

A fundamental division commonly accepted in historical Iranian linguistics is that of Western vs. Eastern Iranian languages. Unlike the relatively clear-cut borders of many Indo-European branches in Europe, the extensive interaction of Iranian languages with each other has made it difficult to decide what exactly constitutes Western and Eastern Iranian languages, especially the subdivisions of Western and Eastern. There are some patterns, such as the Eastern Iranian change of “b d g” to something around the lines of “v dh gh”, but overall things just aren’t as concrete.

Many Iranian languages have only begun to be written in quite recent history, with 2 glaring exceptions: Old Persian and Avestan, both long dead. The oldest Avestan manuscript dates back to around 1288 BC, while the oldest Old Persian inscription dates to the early 500s BC. Both were still quite clearly old Indo-European languages, complete with 3 grammatical genders and a medium-sized case system. Old Persian and Avestan are often cited as the oldest Western and Eastern Iranian languages respectively.

Then we hit the middle stage, with Middle Persian, Parthian, and Sogdian, where things start to get a bit weird. A large-scale loss of vowels in certain contexts leads to a major simplification of the Old Iranian case system, most commonly to just 2 cases, nominative and oblique. This vowel loss also causes grammatical gender to disappear entirely in many Iranian languages. There are exceptions to both of these, of course; Ossetian, an Iranian language spoken in the Caucasus, has 8-9 cases developed through the merging and reanalysis of postpositions, and Kurdish and Pashto both still have a masculine and feminine gender distinction.

The most interesting developments, though, happen in the verb. Between the Old and Middle Iranian stages, the original past tense is replaced by a perfect construction with to be and the past participle of the verb (think “is taken” instead of “took”). Considering that the purpose of the passive voice is to take the original object of a sentence and promote it to the role of agent (the thing doing the action: ”The dog bit the man -> “The man was bit (by the dog)”), this caused a very interesting situation where present tense sentences use nominative case for the subject and oblique case for the object, but in the past tense use the nominative case for the object and oblique case for the subject. Imagine if in English we said “I see him” in the present but “Me saw he” in the past. This is, of course, a vast simplification, and this construction probably deserves a post of its own to clarify everything.

The Iranian verbal system was shaken up in more than just a new past tense and some oddball case assignment. Overall, there was a restructuring of the traditional IE tense system to that of a present vs. past verb stem opposition and various new prefixes. For example, here is the verb raftan “go” in Early Modern Persian (raft is the past stem, raw is the present stem, and COP  is an abbreviation meaning verbs like “to be”):

Rather than pay attention to the terminology, pay attention to how all of these are formed. You have mē- + present stem, mē- + past stem, past stem alone, past stem + ending +”to be”, and past tense + past tense of “to be” (that’s what “bud” is). Rather than various sets of personal endings that are swapped out to encode new grammatical nuance, the personal endings remain relatively unchanged while verb stem and prefixes are swapped out.

Finally, here are some words in various Iranian languages with shared roots.

One:
Iranian Persian: yek
Kurdish: yak, yek
Pashto: yaw
Ossetian: iu

Eat:
Iranian Persian: khor-dan (Early Modern Persian khwar-dan)
Kurdish: xwar-in
Pashto: xwaṛ-əl
Ossetian: xær-yn

Know:
Iranian Persian: dân-estan
Kurdish: zan-în
Ossetian: zon-yn

If the details were lost on you, or simply weren’t as interesting to you as they are to me, that’s fine. The main thing to get out of this is that Persian is not only not related to Arabic, but in fact part of a rich Indo-European branch showing some very distinct departures from the grammatical norms of Europe.

Crouching down in front of him, Derek tilted his head, eyes raking over Stiles’ face, unfazed by the death glare he was receiving in return. “I really hope your father cooperates, Stiles. I don’t want to have to hurt you.”

Stiles scoffed in disbelief, straining as far forward as he could in his bonds. “Yeah, I’m sure the big bad mafia boss would have a mental breakdown and cry himself to sleep every night if he hurt an innocent child. Oh wait! I forgot, you don’t have a conscience.” Derek huffed a small laugh of amusement, but Stiles kept going. “Guess you won’t have to worry about feeling any remorse if you hurt me.”

His heart was pounding in his chest beneath his false bravado, so loud he was sure even Derek could hear it.

Derek reached out as he spoke next, cupping Stiles’ chin in his hand. “It’d be a shame, though, to ruin such a pretty face.” His eyes bored into Stiles’, heat rising in Stiles’ bones.

Homemade Kolacky Cookies

A kolach (also spelled kolache, kolace or kolacky /kəˈlɑːtʃi, -tʃki/, from the Czech and Slovak plural koláče, sg. koláč) is a type of pastry that holds a portion of fruit, surrounded by a puffy cushion of supple dough.

When you travel internationally, you get to experience different cultures. This can mean different languages, different architecture, and different ideas about nap times. But you also get to sample desserts from around the world.

Lieutenant Christov brought these back to the Q branch headquarters after being stations in the central Europe branch for ten years. Even now in Hawaii he bakes them and remembers the brisk breeze blowing over the mountains and the flowers on the hills.

Ingredients:

1 cup butter or margarine, softened

1 package (8 ounces) cream cheese, softened

1 Tbsp milk

1 Tbsp sugar

1 egg yolk

1 ½ cups all-purpose flour

½ tsp baking powder

1 can fruit filling/preserve (I prefer raspberry or apricot)

confectioners sugar (optional)

Directions:

1. Soften the butter and cream cheese

2. Beat butter, cream cheese, milk, and sugar in bowl with electric mixer until thoroughly blended.

3. Beat in egg yolk.

4. Sift flour and baking powder and stir into mixture to make stiff dough.

5. Cover and refrigerate several hours if not overnight.

6. Preheat oven to 400F.

7. Roll out dough on floured surface to 1/4″ thick. (Thin but not see through)

8. Here’s where you have options. I prefer the square variety. Either cut a square or cut a circle about 2″ in diameter and then put a thumb print in the center.

9. Regardless of the shape, put a blob of filling in the center. If you are doing the square kind, fold the opposite corners in over the filling.

10. Bake for 10-12 minutes or until lightly browned.

11. Let cool on wire racks and maybe sprinkle with confectioners sugar before serving.

Great as dessert or breakfast!

Ten Things The Pagans Gave Christmas

Christianity has a long history of assimilating aspects of other faiths and cultures. Here are ten traditions closely associated with Christmas, but which date from ancient pre-Christian beliefs from all over Europe…

1. The twelve days of Christmas. The twelve-day solstice festival of Yule celebrated the rebirth of the Sun, and coincides with the twelve days of Christmas.

2: Chocolate logs: These are the descendants of the Yule log, which was brought into the house at the start of Yule, and burnt in the hearth as part of the festivities.

3: The Christmas tree: The evergreen fir was seen as a symbol of life throughout Europe. Its branches were often used to decorate homes during Yuletide, and the trees were used by the Romans during the winter feast of Saturnalia.

4: Kissing under the mistletoe: Part of an ancient Druidic tradition linking the mistletoe plant to fertility and rebirth.

5: Christmas carolling: The tradition of wassailing - singing and drinking outdoors at Yule, especially in orchards, to ensure a good harvest in spring.

6: Santa’s gifts: From the Icelandic Yule Boys, or Jólasveinarnir; a pair of tricksters who traditionally left gifts in the shoes of children (some naughty, some nice) at Yuletide.

7: Christmas holly. Bringing holly into the house in the form of wreaths and decorations is an ancient tradition, based on the yearly conflict between the Oak King and the Holly King (Summer and Winter)

8: Santa’s sleigh: This is associated with the Wild Hunt, a supernatural procession during which the god Odin rode (in his Hunter Aspect) across the sky.

9: The Virgin birth: Many, many world religions have this tradition, but both the Egyptian god Horus and the solar god Mithra (also found as “Mitra” in the Indian Vedic religion, which is over 3,500 years old), were widely believed to have been born of virgin mothers - and both of them on December 25th.

10: Fairy lights and Christmas candles: A lingering reminder of the solstice as a festival of light and fire.

When Stiles leaves Beacon Hills, he does it without a backwards glance. For two years he is happy on the other side of the country- until someone targets not only him, but his daughter.

Unfortunately, the asshole bodyguard his dad hired to make sure he gets back home is none other than Derek Hale. And that's really not very good for either of them.

Not the usual form of Payment by Anachanee (99k, E)

John Stilinski has been brutally killed and Stiles Stilinski finds himself thrust to the head of the American branch of the Stilinski Clan at the age of eighteen. The mobster family that operates mainly in central Europe, but had branched out to America with one very talented Claudia Stilinski, who had secured the market of central California (San Francisco, Brentwood, San Jose). She was succeeded by her husband and now her son.

When his enforcer, Isaac, brings him Derek Hale as compensation for his family’s debt, he’s not quite sure what to do. The Hales were a successful family who had worked with the Stilinskis quite successfully over the last decades. Now they are offering their son instead of money. Though Stiles is still learning the ropes of this mob business, he’s pretty sure that THAT’S not normal!

Stiles ends up using Derek as a bodyguard which is probably not what you’re meant to do with a rival family’s son, but Stiles is making this up as he goes. And despite him being a mobster, he still has some dignity left.

You Can’t Dodge Stiles Stilinski by stilinskisparkles (1/1 | 27,250 | NC17)

“And this is it?” he points at the first girl. “I saw you in first period, you barely bothered to catch any of the balls you were tossed. I’m pretty sure you spent more time on your cell.”

The girl rolls her eyes, and looks completely unashamed of the fact she had her phone out in class. Derek knows Finstock would have stepped on it.

“And you,” he points at the second girl, taller and with eyes that meet Derek’s coolly. “You can’t throw anything worth half a damn. And what are you,” he points at the boy, trying not to look him in the eye, and failing. “A hundred and fifty pounds wet?”

The boy smirks at him, and Derek looks resolutely away. He’s now desperately trying not to picture him wet.

“I can’t work with this.”

Make Me Skin & Bones (Where The Hell Have You Been) by Kandakicksass (44/44 | 54,865 | R)

Stiles takes the darkness from the Nemeton a lot harder than Scott and Allison do. Derek comes back after he goes catatonic.

What kind of idiot would put their phone number out there in the world for any stranger to call?

The Hunt by HenryMercury (3/3 | 29,759 | R)

Stiles wakes up with a hangover and the phone number of the most attractive (and the frowniest) guy he’s ever encountered.

…Who also happens to be the front-man for the band Scott’s just joined.

“When we were sure you were going to survive,” Derek explains, “we had to tell him what had happened.”

“What had happened,” Stiles repeats in a strange, hallow tone of voice as he stares out of the window.

“Stiles,” Lydia says and steps closer. “You’re okay now.”

“You’re lying,” he whispers.

The pack is kidnapped and horrible things take place. When Stiles awakes from his coma he realizes that just because they’re not being held captive it doesn’t mean all their problems are over. Far from, actually. It seems like being kidnapped was just the beginning.

Nothing will ever be the same.

Life is 10% what happens to you and 90% how you react to it. Who was the fucking genius that said that? Because right now, Stiles is flipping out of his mind.

Or the one where Stiles and Derek’s one-night stand turns into late night rendezvous, Friday night movies, a special surprise and maybe a happy ending… yep, definitely a happy ending. I’m not that cruel.
