eugene ely

On 18 January 1911 Eugene Ely made the first aircraft landing on board a ship, the cruiser USS Pennsylvania, anchored in San Francisco Bay. This photo shows Ely seated in his Curtiss pusher biplane on board Pennsylvania after his successful landing, just before taking off and returning to shore. Note Ely’s flying attire, including a leather helmet and rubber inner tubes worn around his shoulders as a life preserver. NHHC image NH NH 77579.
