Just realize the new cast board is officially released so I am updating some cast list from my visits. Since my beautiful friend has already updated most of the nights (click here for her posts), I will just update some nights that I spent without her. I suppose this is the beauty of SNM. Though it is a journey you need to embark on yourself, you make friends along the way. There is nothing more rewarding than to discuss your experience after the show, so seriously let go of your beloved ones…

The biggest Highlight tonight:

After 1 week business trip in another city , which was my longest break for SNM so far, Calloway did something dear to my heart. When he called the card on the stage of Manderley, he said ‘Lindsey, welcome back’ to the mike, and hugged me after. I felt so grateful.

Other highlights:

-The way how Ben warned 2 rude audiences who kept speaking loudly. Awesome.

-A very warm chat with Calloway and Violet in Manderley when there were only us. And an interesting game with Violet.

-Jude’s Taxi gave me the only 1:1 tonight and which was really a special one. And his walkout.

‘Coming back to the family’ is so f**king good.

Number Sixty: Is that all there is... to life, and moving on with it?

Warning: Spoilers Ahead

Earlier today I was reading Lipstick Traces by Greil Marcus. I first read it in college in 2001 in a seminar on Marx and Nietzsche. It opened my eyes to a very different kind of scholarship and a very different way of thinking about cultural history. I love that book. But reading it again all these years later I was stunned by how differently I feel about it. The scholarship is still strong, well-argued, and illuminating; but now I can’t help but be overwhelmed by the absurd narcissism of the whole project. This whole book because Greil Marcus felt a need to justify how amazing he felt when he heard the Sex Pistols; he went so far as to ascribe an entire secret and unconscious chain of historical relations and intellectual antecedents to them to give them the profundity they’d earned in his heart. It’s kind of amazing, brilliant, and sad all at once.

I mention this all because at one point in the book, he uses a quote that I love from Kim Gordon from Sonic Youth. “People pay to see others believe in themselves,” she said, “on stage, in the midst of rock ‘n’ roll, many things happen and anything can happen, whether people come as voyeurs or come to submit to the moment.”

That sort of sums up my feelings about Sleep No More, sixty shows and 3.something years later. This is a very complicated recap, because it involves a lot of history, and personal experiences, and opinions. If you’ve read this whole blog and come on this journey with me, a lot of this will make sense. If you don’t like that I “speak with authority” about things, do me the favor and tune out now. If it bothers you that my opinions invalidate your experiences, that’s too damn bad, load your own opinions with more conviction next time around and stop trying to invalidate my experiences with your opinions… about my opinions.

Tonight is my 50th visit to McKinnon. It is one of those nights that you start to pay some extra attention and it is one of those nights you were dazed and confused.

The night starts with an interesting bar moment. It is interesting to see Liu Yu  break off his daily routine and add a bit spice to the in-bar characters. Sometimes people forget that the journey starts once you step into the bar if not sooner, and the interaction with the in-bar characters are just equally fun and rewarding. Tonight is also the first night I met Calloway’s wife, Lucianna. Chang Ching-i just has an aura of elegance around her that you can’t help but to look at her. Oh well, you are a lucky man, Calloway. I am a bit confused with the relationship between James and Calloway now, but it is fun to see the actors improvise.

The moment I spotted Lily Ockwell ‘s sexy witch, I know i have to follow her. I enjoy how she uses her eyes to grab attention. Even during rave, she can somehow manage to establish eye contact with her followers and this connection is just priceless. Her interpretation of the transition from sadness/madness to her normal witch state is remarkable. Lily is a very vocal person, and that is a character I truly adore.

Then there is Eric Jackson Bradley and his taxi. Ok, this is a completely new taxi. You can see he bring his personality into this role and maybe it is just my perception but I feel he genuinely enjoy this role. This may be one of the major difference between those seasoned veterans and the new casts. Even though he is very new to Taxi in McKinnon, Eric has the confidence to revamp the whole personality or even the character. I can somehow sense that he was the master of high street and somehow he controlled people’s fate. I don’t know why he was obsessed with the butterfly or why every male character on the 4th floor suddenly enjoyed wiping glasses or why Cunning and Taxi didn’t talk anymore, yet when Eric did the scene, it just looked like… he had everything under control…

Comparing to Eric, I feel some new casts just are a bit too reserved.Tonight I went to listen to Simon Palmer singing, and though his voice was still marvelous, he was not really communicating with the audience. Comparing to the other Duncans (Sam, Fred, Eric), he was more in his own world. Personally I prefer how the other Duncans handle this scene (they handle this scene very differently but they all make sense to me) as technically at that time, he should be dead and therefore, he should be able to see the ghosts.

Chris Jäger’s speakeasy is definitely timid. If this is the personality he wants to portray, he did a good job. There is still some timing issue, as I tried to follow him leaving the rep bar but failed as the witches were already coming into the bar for the next scene. I trust this can be easily fixed though.

Tonight, I watched some scenes of Paul Zivkovich’s Macbeth. His wall garden is still my favorite and kudos to him as I can’t believe how much he was aware of the audience. I thoroughly enjoy every Paul Z moment.

-Husband and Cunning man’s detective office was always full of tense atmosphere. That’s one of my favorite scene of the new story-line. Omar and Ben always bring intensity into that room.

-Best Cunning Man’s 1:1 ever.

-How Ben deal with that broken door and use it to express and add more emotions on the character he was performing was amazing. He is a great actor.

Highlights:

-A really special ‘gift’ received from Jude’s Taxi from the first moment I stepped into the rep bar. And that 'gift’ made me one of the most special audience for the rest of the show.

-Tim’s Malcolm pairing with EJB’s Duncan was soooo sweet. Happiness runs in the family. The son was really his father’s own flesh and blood. The shaving and the funeral was enjoyable to see.

-When Luke’s Speakeasy was with Lily’s Agnes, everything was highlights.

-Luke’s pool game! The most interesting moment in speakeasy’s bar. I laughed.

-The award of 'Best scene of tonight’ goes to Macbeth & Banquo ’s fight.

-Thanks to Luke for the walkout. It was a significant gift for my 40th visit.

Highlights:

-OOOOMMMMGGGG Kenna’s Lady Macduff!!!! I haven’t cried so hard because of a single character for a long long time but I did it during the whole loop of Kenna’s Lady Macduff. The murder, the moonlight becomes you, the dinning room, the Macduffs’ duet, the 1:1. Every single moment was perfect.

-Ingrid’s Sexy witch was gorgeous! Her duets with Gao Yang’s Macduff was worth seeing. I wish I could spent more time with her.

-I rarely follow the Macduffs but I was highly impressed by them tonight. Gao Yang’s solo dance had improved a lot and maintained a high level. I can see he worked very hard on acting as well. He and Ben are the best interrogation partners.

-EJB had a funny moment during the shaving scene and it was not unexpected.

-Lily’s Agnes had girl power. She was so brave to face the danger and was also very fragile to make me cry. Thank you for the unforgettable walkout!

Highlights:

-Omar’s Banquo gave me the most impressive interaction during the reset. It must be the top 1 of my personal ranking.

-The kiss between Luke’s Speakeasy and Emily’s Hecate.

-How Luke made fun of that timid girl with his cue and how he was taught by that pool master was both so funny.

-I spent 1 loop with Kenna’s Agnes and now I can say that I’ve watched all her characters and all Agnes by different performers. Thanks for the 1:1 and the walkout.

2

Before and after.

Wow.

Sexy witch (Ida saki). Boy witch (idk but he had a lip ring). Porter (Eric Jackson Bradley). Caught some Fulton, Agnes, and Speakeasy, but mostly sexy witch and porter.

I got an ace for the first time and was let out at the ballroom where I was the only one there to dance with her, and I just stayed with her. Gosh those eyes. I did see porter fold a boat during the witches’ trio in the lobby before finding her again. I saw the reset dance twice and the mirror bit all three times. Accidentally got the boy witch 1:1-I was actually watching porter during Is That All There Is (TEARS. WEEPING.) and boy witch just stole me away because I was standing in front of the guestbook (kinda to the side, actually). It was super cool, I’ve never seen my own reflection I someone else’s eyes before, but I also felt kinda guilty because I felt for Porter and it was such a boy witch power play to take away the sympathetic human. So I went back after and got the porter 1:1. I did have it once before, and the first time it was heartbreaking. This time it played on the sinister side. I got the porter walk out and he did a kiss on each cheek with a very warm smile. I was actually both tense and shaking during the finale and idk why it affected me so much, so it was especially good to have him there as such a kind presence.

It is distinctly different to wait in the cold than it is to wait in the not cold. It took so long for me to have feeling return to my hands and I still don’t know if I scraped my hand while running up a flight of stairs.

I’ve had to explain that the lipstick happened inside the show to people in Manderley after and people on my way home (bless the cvs clerk for not treating me like I was crazy). I truly do not draw lines on my cheek in lipstick. But tonight it’s a souvenir.

Onalea and the Vagabonds were great in Manderley after. Check out their music. Onalea played Hecate and sang tonight and was perfectly lovely after her set when I asked where to find her records. Officially on the mailing list now. She also asked about the lines and totally understood when I just kind of shrugged and said Porter.

Max and Violet were in the bar tonight. Violet sat with me at the beginning and it was such a relief to talk to her because I went alone. Max said it was best not to have a chaperone.

(I also properly shook hands with Nick and thanked him as he was leaving and I was watching the music. He’s performing in the Jan 31 Follies so you should go if you can.)

All in all, show #3 went great.

anonymous asked:

I feel like I haven't seen a ton on EJB like playing the porter. I know he's credited as such, but it seems like it's always Paul? I had him for a rotation a while ago, and he was flawless. And I've just been looking for more stories about him

I have seen EJB’s porter a couple times, but not on our most recent trip. I don’t know how often he plays the role. I’ve also seen him swing in as Macbeth and Duncan fairly recently. I’m a fan. It sounds like you have some stories of your own you could share, but here’s one from my memory vault:

EJB Porter adds this little nuance with his paper boats. I don’t know if it’s his original idea (as I can’t claim to have seen every porter, ever), but he’s the only one I’ve seen do it and he does so consistently.  When he writes the “Remember the Porter” note, EJB folds a large boat out of the paper, as many porters do. Instead of giving it to an audience member or leaving it on the counter, though, he tucks it into his jacket. Later, in another scene, in his office, he makes another smaller paper boat. If you’ve followed the porter, you know when I mean. As he returns down the hall towards the lobby, he makes the little boat “sail” in the air. The boat weaves in and out of the bars on the iron door and bobs down the hall, EJB flouncing behind it with this kid-like expression on his face. At the end, near the entrance to the lobby, he spins around 360 degrees and reveals that the little boat has become a big boat. Magic!
