ep: reckoning

2

R.E.M.’s 2nd studio album was released on 9 April 1984, almost exactly a year after Murmur.

Teaming again with producers Don Dixon and Mitch Easter, the album was recorded quickly over the span of about 3 weeks (Dixon remembers 25 days of studio time, while guitarist Peter Buck has cited different time periods, from 2 weeks to 11 days). Reckoning sold better than its predecessor, peaking at #27 in the US and remaining on the charts for almost a year).

The painting used on the cover was a collaboration between Michael Stipe and Howard Finster, with Stipe later claiming he was disappointed in the final result.

On this day in music history: April 9, 1984 - “Reckoning”, the second album by R.E.M. is released. Produced by Don Dixon and Mitch Easter, it is recorded at Reflection Sound in Charlotte, NC from December 8, 1983 - January 16, 1984. Issued as the follow up to their critically acclaimed debut “Murmur”, the band record their new album in just eleven days of studio time (spread over a five week period), having stockpiled new material in the interim. It spins off two singles including “So. Central Rain (I’m Sorry)” (#85 Pop) and “(Don’t Go Back To) Rockville”. When R.E.M. makes their national television debut on Late Night With David Letterman on October 6, 1983 while promoting their first album, they perform “So. Central Rain” publicly for the first time. Lead singer Michael Stipe sings the song with its not yet completed lyrics (mumbling through the sections where the words are not finished) and before the song has an official title. Original pressings of the album lists the individual sides as “(L)EFT” and “®IGHT”. It is reissued on CD in 1992 with five additional bonus tracks. The title is remastered and reissued again in 2009 as a double CD edition, with the second disc featuring a live concert recorded in Chicago in July of 1984. “Reckoning” peaks at number twenty seven on the Billboard Top 200, and is certified Gold in the US by the RIAA.

Reckoning (voices) -- progged out
Sing out the Silence
Reckoning (voices) -- progged out

So, yeah, a snapshot of what this one has become, with added bass, properly recorded vocals (albeit not properly sung I suppose), a more direct drum sound (I had reverb on the drums before, like, what?), oh yeah, and the fabled 9/8s break at the end. Once I write more lyrics and have trained my voice a little more, I’ll finish this one up.

Opinions? I value any feedback, you know?

I used to work for a company that had a partnership with EA games. All of us got to pick a console game out of EA’s library to take home for free. I picked “Kingdom’s of Amalur: Reckoning” on a whim…mostly because nothing else interested me.

It became one of my favorite games EVER. I invested so many hours in that game…like…hundreds way too many.

I love the fae. Way too much.

I came up with a fae OC and an almain (human) OC. The story is that the girl, Minnow, rescues a warrior fae named Sol after he was attacked by bandits. Though Minnow dislikes the fae due to their condescension and hatred for mortals, she saves Sol from returning to the Great Cycle (the fae version of death) in order to show him and his brethren the kindness and values that many mortals possess.

Cliche, I know. But I think they’re cute.

Harborcoat - R.E.M.

They crowded up to Lenin with the noses worn off
My handshake is worthy, it’s all that you’ve got
Metal shivs on wood pushed through our back
There’s a splinter in your eye and it reads “react”

They’ve shifted the statues for harboring ghosts
Reddened their necks and collared their clothes
Then we ditched the books but the menace got out
She gathered the corners and called it her gown

She said, oh, please find my harborcoat
Can’t go outside without it
Find my harborcoat
Can’t go outside without it
