Les Mis au where Grantaire is Enjolras’ guardian angel, sent to protect him from death by gunshot. But the longer Grantaire is on earth, the more he realizes that Enjolras won’t be persuaded away from his revolution through admonitory dreams and visions.

So instead, Grantaire takes the form of a human, a cynic, and does his best to dissuade Enjolras that way.

But Grantaire can’t get him to listen. He could FORCE him to listen, but for some reason using his angelic powers to warp this beautiful man’s mind seems like a sin itself.

And when it’s clear that Grantaire has failed, he does what all guardian angels must do when they fail to protect their charge: he dies alongside him.
