Most weekly oracle card readings that are geared towards a general audience begin with Monday–I like to read them, but I forget everything by the end of the week…mom brain. Let’s pull a Tarot card and ask that it gives us whatever it is that we need to handle (or not handle) the upcoming events-chores-work-parenting-procrastination that comes.~Nice change of pace~

Thanks, Anon. I think Carter very much enjoys being an only child - she never got along with Ebby, coming into the place somewhat late in the old man’s life. They usually avoided each other. And I’m fine. Life goes on.
I do worry about how Carter would get on with a new dog. She’s very skittish around other dogs and people too. She has seizures when she’s stressed, and I think she was abused as a puppy by someone in a baseball cap - she goes insane around anyone in a ballcap and generally hates men - and she was certainly never socialized properly. But I take good care of her and we have an understanding. She’s getting on in years herself so I may wait until she trots off to the great kennel in the sky before I really start looking into another animal.
I like to believe Junkrat loves Disney movies as an adult, having never been able to enjoy them as a child. Some of his favorites include:
Great Mouse Detective. Sometimes he can be randomly heard singing Rattigan’s song, but with slightly altered lyrics.
Lion King. Let’s face it he and Roadhog are Timon and Puma.
Beauty and the Beast. Drawn your own conclusions.
The Rescuers Down Under. Seeing the Outback not portrayed as a dying wasteland makes him wistful.
The Tinkerbell/ Disney Fairies series of movies. Don’t judge, there’s a lot of good character development, and …. just shut up.
Junkrat always ends up watching these movies with D.Va and Lucio, because for some reason Rodahog always excuses himself the moment the movie starts. Rat just figures Hog doesn’t like kid stuff, but that doesn’t explain why Hog always seems kind of upset when he leaves.
Cursed Child was dumb and here are some reasons why
(warning: spoilers. this probably won’t make sense unless you’ve read the script. far be it from me to recommend this kneazle-vomit of a play, though, so if you haven’t read it, good)
the plot is messy, strange, and childish. there’s only one time-turner left!! how will the characters cope when said time-turner is lost? oh lol they’ll just use this other convenient time-turner. for convenient plot points, see also: harry can suddenly speak parseltongue again, because well he just kind of needs to be able to do that
Harry cursing “oh dumbledore” without a hint of irony. like really? really
the characterisation was a pile of dragon dung and we all freaking know it. let’s break it down into individual characters here because fuck if I can stop at one bullet point for this
Hermione: the brightest witch of her age, the constant crusader for the unloved and the unrepresented, whose successful career and capacity for kindness apparently rest in the hands of her romance with Ron Weasley. oh… but wait. it sounds a little familiar, this story. hear me out. let’s see now, a highly intelligent person who falls in love but doesn’t have that love reciprocated, and who then becomes a really fucking mean teacher at Hogwarts through bitterness. sound like anyone we know? fam, they tried to parallel Hermione and Snape. Hermione and Snape. this being the same Snape who sneered in Hermione’s face when she’d been visibly hexed, and made her cry; the same Snape who bullied Neville Longbottom for years, while Hermione muttered instructions under her breath to help him. if you want to tell me that Hermione would ever allow herself to become a Snape parallel then I will kindly invite you to shove a dirigible plum where there’s no lumos solem
Harry: when Harry was at his angriest in OOTP, and he’s yelling at Ron and Hermione, there’s one thing we notice. everything he yells is true. he means it. he’s bitter about it and he’s loud and furious, but he doesn’t have the kind of anger that just says anything to cause hurt, that speaks without thinking, not even at this crisis point in his life. are you really going to tell me that the boy who knows down to his bones what it’s like to feel rejected, and misunderstood, and alone, would ever say - even in anger - that he wishes Albus wasn’t his son? I am going to snap wands over this
Cedric. and this one burns. because Cedric was brave and he was true, and he had a sense of justice that led him to telling Harry about the way the golden egg worked, and led him to sharing the winning of the triwizard tournament with Harry. he died, he was murdered at the age of seventeen, embodying a sense of justice so strong, an innocence, a goodness. Cedric Diggory - the boy who believed in fairness with an integrity that is astounding - becoming party to the indiscriminate killing and casual torture of the Death Eaters just because he had his head engorged one time… is about as likely as Hagrid stomping on a dragon egg. it’s an insult to who he was and I am going to engorge the entire bodies of the writers of this fucking play so that hopefully they’ll just float away too, with all the grace and likeability of Aunt Marge
Voldemort: can we all agree now that Voldemort would not father a child. the idea of him experiencing lust seems out of character; the idea of him giving into a base urge seems more so. it’s too human, too vulgar, too physical; it would associate him with the common and the mainstream in a way that I contend he would find repulsive. Tom Riddle Sr. was trapped by Merope into sex and romance; to have sex would be to bring himself closer to his parents, down to the level of a Muggle and a witch who lacked power and craved love, two things Voldemort could never, ever stand. no. he wouldn’t have sex just because he wanted to; he’d be repelled by the idea. what other reason could there be for him to do the nasty with Bellatrix? to ensure the continuation of his line? that makes even less sense. achieving immortality for Voldemort was always a question of magic, a personal quest. he wouldn’t go for a messy, physical back-up plan. he always thought that he would win. if anything, he would see a child as a future threat, not a security. another being in the world with the promise of his power? he wouldn’t risk it.

overall, the message of the play infuriated me. Delphi was the child of Voldemort, so she was evil. Albus was the child of Harry, so he was good. Scorpius was the son of Draco, so he should have been evil, but Draco’s actually kind of good now and his mother was nice, so he can be good too. where is the complexity? was five hours of drama not enough to find some shades of morality? where is the hope, where is the resonance, in a story that says that good begets good and evil begets evil, and nothing can really change? the Harry Potter book series was about a boy who grew up with something inside him that was utterly evil, and who rejected it, fought against it, changed the path that fate seemed to wish him to walk. not slytherin, not slytherin. we had Regulus Black and Sirius Black, who rejected their pasts, whose heritage and whose House stood for nothing against their principles, their eventual and separate forms of bravery. we had Remus Lupin, who transformed into a monster but never became one, not even after years of rejection and pain. we had the word mudblood, and we watched Hermione fight it, we knew it was ridiculous to label someone based on their blood. and now… we have the Cursed Child. a playwhich is flat, and stupid, and tells us that your parentage inevitably dictates your character - and that how you’re treated is how you’ll treat others. dear writers, in the words of Albus Dumbledore, you fail to recognise that it matters not what someone is born, but what they grow to be. you fucks.

I mean, I get they’re going for “Steven hasn’t had all the usual human kid growing up experiences,” but he lived with Greg for most of his childhood before moving in with the Gems, and Greg never had much money, and Steven acquired a great love of books, so how are you going to tell me he’s never been to a public library before? I assume Pearl has lent them books too but I also question whether Pearl has all that many books a child would enjoy.
By the way, I would not have thought books were Steven’s favourite thing. Aren’t his favourite things music and food and giant women?

I do actually like the point they’re raising about reconstructing historical events from a present day point of view - that Steven imagines Buddy looking and sounding like Jamie, that he initially pictures Garnet and Pearl wearing their present-day clothes - that even if you’re drawing on an eyewitness source who’s trying to be honest and clear, you are not going to imagine the things they describe entirely accurately. You can hope to get to some truth about what happened but you’re limited both by the point of view of your narrator and by your own frame of reference. Which I assume is pretty important given that Steven has to try to understand his mother and her war and the choices she made based primarily on what other people who were around at the time - Pearl and Garnet, Bismuth, Eyeball, Jasper - can tell him.
Incidentally, ever since Eyeball protested that Eyeball is not her name I’ve wondered what she does prefer to be called. Amongst themselves, do the Rubies use their facet and cut numbers, or nicknames, or are they just so dumb that they spend all their time saying, “Get over here, Ruby,” “Yes, Ruby?” “No, not you, Ruby, I want Ruby”?
There’s also the fact that while Steven doesn’t repeat the clothing mistake with Amethyst, he imagines her with the long hair that she didn’t grow until after she met Greg at least a hundred years later (since “Story for Steven” doesn’t call attention to the fact that this is how Steven imagines the story his father is telling him, the way “Buddy’s Book” is doing, I don’t think we’re supposed to question whether things really looked the way they appear within the flashback - otherwise it would be strange that Steven so accurately imagined what Vidalia and Marty looked like when he hadn’t met either of them at the time). Amethyst has that long hair in the shark-punching painting, though - but we have no way of knowing when that painting was made, who did it or how accurate it is. And whenever it was, it has to be a reconstruction; Garnet’s joke about getting the shark to pose only lampshades that.

ok so by request heres some more mentally ill newsies fam headcanons (a bit of an extension on this post) and before we begin, since there was some confusion last time, im mentally ill and this isnt romanticization, it’s a coping mech. enjoy. tw dissociation, past child abuse, disordered eating, self destructive behavior, homophobia
speaking of coping mechs, betting is racetrack’s lmao it gives him a sense of control over his money and habits and stuff like that even tho realistically hes got less control over it than he used to back when his parents used to take nearly everything he made, before he ran away
if he doesnt get to go down to the races at least a couple times a week he starts getting real anxious and twitchy and snappy so even though sheepshead is technically brooklyn, both jack and spot let him sell over there
jack’s super tactile because it’s really grounding for him & makes him feel connected and present. like just laying a hand on davey’s shoulder or putting his legs in someone’s lap while theyre just chillin helps him remember that he’s u know..a real person. in a real place. and not just lost in his head or whatever
he hated the refuge for a lot of reasons but one of the biggest is that snyder used to isolate him and keep him away from the other kids bc he was such a troublemaker so he literally had no way of grounding himself and it was distressing and scary and bad and he dissociated a lot because of it
a lot of the guys have weird relationships with food bc they dont get a lot of it so sometimes they get to a point where theyre just..forgetting to buy food. it happens to the older ones a lot bc theyre, u kno, saving their money for an apartment in a couple years, or a new pair of shoes for the smallest newsie, or a jacket for winter. and food becomes sidelined
usually tho they all make a habit of checking in and being like, dude did you eat today?? well did you eat yesterday then?? no? ok we’re getting something now. theyre all a little fucked up but they care about each other so theyve all got someone watching their backs
davey kinda feels like he’s invading this family space at first and he tries not to be intrusive or assume anything and he doesnt realize how much everyone actually cares about him until he doesnt sell for two days bc hes sick and wakes up in the middle of the night the second day to like ten newsies on his fire escape trying to figure out if hes ok
comfort objects….most of them have one or two…jack’s got a book about santa fe that he knows by heart and also his sketchbook, spot’s got his cane, boots has his marbles (haha)
theres…a lot of self destructive behavior that goes on. like, nobodys gonna stop any newsie from really doing anything or going anywhere unless its a turf problem so theyre free to do really ill advised things that they know will make them feel shitty bc. they just want to
not everyone makes a habit of it obviously but like. yeah. jack hangs around near the refuge sometimes just to hate it more and sometimes spot sees his family on the street and follows them around for a bit because fuck them ok he’s the king of brooklyn and he can do what he wants. hes not the same 12 yr old they kicked out for liking boys. and who cares if just seeing their faces makes him want to throw up
they monitor the headlines for each other in an attempt at a trigger warning for the guys who might be set off by something in the paper. thats why jack and race and the older guys always get their papers first so they can scan it and like if some woman was found murdered in an alley and they know that the newest kids dad died in a similar way, they can warn them not to look at that article
sometimes theyre not fast enough to warn the person though or sometimes they accidentally get triggered themselves and those are really bad days bc you cant really sell while youre having a panic attack. and usually the person will have already bought their papes, too, so every divvys them up and sells em and gives the money to the guy at the end of the day bc it’s not his fault
after crutchie gets out of the refuge he and jack talk about it a lot in private and just like. get it all out. bc its a fresh trauma for crutchie and an old one for jack that hes never been able to properly talk about bc nobody gets it, but now crutchie does get it. and it really helps the two of them to heal and feel better about the whole thing
theyre all definitely a family with a really good support system and i know ive been focusing on the manhattan newsies with a couple references to spot but trust me its very similar in brooklyn and the other boroughs bc theyre all in kind of a sinking boat together you know
the separate boroughs start working together a lot close since the rally and the union got formed obviously and everyone kinda figures out theyve been doing the same sorts of coping mechs and behaviors and building the same kind of support systems entirely separate from each other
theyre all a union, the newsboys union, and theyve always been acting like one
