“ …a volcano can destroy the town – but so can all of this! you’re so worried about yourselves that you’re turning against each other. you’re so frightened about the future that you’re ruining now. look at the sun! it’s still shining! look at the kelp! it’s still… kelping! and look at us. we still have each other. ”
Had she really thought I would not know him? I could recognize him by touch alone, by smell; I would know him blind; by the way his breaths came and his feet struck the earth. I would know him in death, at the end of the world.
A Different Song embodies so many beautiful, and painful, things about life and growing up away from home. It’s the kind of story that stays with you even once you’ve turned the last page, and I’m honored to have been able to work with you on this, Q. Thank you so much for commissioning me <3

Brian: “It’s perfect”
I love to no end how All Too Well means “I love you.”
Taylor released it as a heartbreaking track 5 and we loved both the song her for the song to the end of the world.
She responded by telling us she loved us by playing it at the Grammy’s. None of us took that for granted.
She told us she loved us with it again at 1989 Tour LA night 1 when she said she’d decided the night before she should play it. It was a clear “I love you, thank you, you’re the best.” Honestly, I’ve never felt that loved.
Then at F1, those who were there shouted “ALL TOO WELL ALL TOO WELL ALL TOO WELL” when she sat down at the piano. It was an expression of love as much as it was a song request. It was “I love you, even in your most heartbreaking moments” And you could tell from the smile on her face, she felt all of that love.
And then in Houston for Super Saturday Night she responded to that by saying “I love you too. Always. And I always love your love” in her performance of All Too Well.
It’s a song of heartbreak and devastation and it has come to mean “I love you and I’ll never stop” between us an Taylor and I’m so proud of that.
