The city of Campene has withstood its fair share of disasters: war, famine, earthquakes—and plague. So when a new sickness begins to spread across the city, few express concern. Least worried of all is the jester Fabrizio, who has more immediate matters on his mind—such as keeping his young daughter in the dark about his side-job as an assassin. He, like the rest of the Campene, believes the sickness known as the gray lover will pass by. Everyone says so. Everyone except Adrien McAllister. Brilliant, reclusive, and sardonic, Adrien believes the gray lover to be the start of a deadly plague. A foreigner to the city, Adrien finds himself enlisting the help of the Fabrizio. Together they’ll work to stem the gray lover—provided, of course, the clash of personalities doesn’t ruin their partnership before it even begins. But while Adrien and Fabrizio attempt to navigate the plague, the citizens of Campene, and each other, the ancient structures of power in Campene have begun to crumble. What begins as a race against disease quickly morphs into a fight against a powerful, unknown enemy. New players are emerging from the shadows, each grasping for power, and they are willing to use whatever means necessary to achieve their goals. Adrien and Fabrizio are the only ones standing between Campene and utter chaos—and even they are not immune to the deadly forces at work.
