the divers and the sailors and the women on the pier — songs for lovers lost at sea

fisherman’s woman - emilíana torrini; I’m pretending to be a good fisherman’s woman / just like anna ingun’s mom / the gladiator of all fisherman’s wives / makes it a lot easier thinking of you / on the sea where you have to be a month at a time / working hard in the day / your hands cracking from the cold and the salt / in the night when you go to bed / you try to sleep by listening to the boat breathing / and the only thing, the only thing you can think about is me

penelope’s song - loreena mckennitt; now that the time has come / soon gone is the day / there upon some distant shore / you’ll hear me say / long as the day in the summer time / deep as the wine dark sea / I’ll keep your heart with mine / till you come to me

moon and moon - bat for lashes; lover when you don’t lay with me / I’m a huntress for a husband lost at sea

follow the map - melissa auf der maur; follow the map, back to the start of his broken heart / bury him at sea, he’ll never return to me / forgive him all his sins, he knows not where he’s been / bury him at sea, he’ll never return to me / forgive him all his sins, the mistress of the sea deceived him

gardener - haruko; he always wanted to be a gardener / and now he’s floating down in the ocean / where his dreams died long ago

harbor - vienna teng; sail your sea, meet your storm / all I want is to be your harbor / the light in me will guide you home / all I want is to be your harbor

the diver’s wife - joanna newsom; and in an infinite regress / tell me why is the pain of birth / lighter borne than the pain of death? / I ain’t saying that I loved you first / but I loved you best / I know we must abide / each by the rules that bind us here / the divers and the sailors and the women on the pier

Emilíana Torrini - Gollum’s Song

from The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers film soundtrack

Out of all the lyrical songs in Howard Shore’s score this is my favourite by a long shot. It has such a heart-wrenching melancholic nature and the vocals are so haunting and macabre. You are lost, you can never go home

Gollum: “They cursed us. Murderer they called us.

They cursed us, and drove us away.

And we wept, Precious, we wept to be so alone.

And we only wish to catch fish so juicy sweet.

And we forgot the taste of bread…

the sound of trees… the softness of the wind.

We even forgot our own name. My Precious. ”

“Gollum’s Song” performed by Emiliana Torrini, written by Howard Shore
