ember island katara

i like that one scene from the ember island players where actor katara was like “i’ve always had eyes for you” or something like that to actor zuko and then katara and zuko awkwardly look at each other and shift away. i feel like a lot of people write it off as bryke trying to dissuade watchers from shipping zutara but like honestly??

the look they give each other is not one of disgust. they’re uncomfortable with the statement because guess what? oh shit, when they were in the crystal catacombs they saw each other in a completely new light (obviously not to the extent of being in a relationship but i’ll get to my point). so as a “delusional zutara shipper” i like to think they were more unsure of the prospect of where their relationship might be if the zuko betrayal never happened in the crossroads of destiny, rather than being disgusted at the statement

they were uncomfortable with the line because they probably realised it was lowkey true. that whole crystal catacomb scene when they were talking about their mothers and zuko’s scar and katara’s hate for the fire nation, that is a really significant conversation to have considering they barely even knew each other at that time? they were so quick to accept and trust each other (and if azula hadn’t manipulated zuko into changing his mind, imagine how immense that trust and respect would be at that same time)

so like yeah, they did always have eyes for each other. they always knew they trusted each other. they always felt as if it would be easy to work together. they saw themselves in each other, and were willing to put their past aside to work together. and it was ruined and yet even when they (katara especially) tried to hate the other, they couldn’t shake those thoughts of how quickly they would’ve dropped everything to give the other a chance. they had eyes for what could’ve been

for katara, i’d say she uncomfortably shifted away because she knows this and she’s thought about it a lot. for zuko, he did it because he also knows this and he regrets his decision to give their alliance a shot. because they had eyes for each other, they subconsciously knew they would make the perfect team even without directly knowing it

Happy (late) 10th anniversary,  Avatar!

I like to think one year after the war they would go back to Ember Island to see the new play, and hopefully they’d be a little happier with it this time around (and yes, Zuko wanted to bring Azula too, and you can see how amused she is–and no, Suki is just looking after her because someone had to do it, she’s still with Sokka though)

(also, sorry, Zutara and subtle Tokka. I couldn’t draw it any other way. not sorry)

the signs as out of context avatar: the last airbender quotes:
  • Aries: "she's crazy and she needs to go down."
  • Taurus: "take a bite out of the silver sandwich!"
  • Gemini: "hello, Zuko here..."
  • Cancer: "BOOMERANG! you DO always come back!"
  • Leo: "it's ok, you can laugh. it's funny."
  • Virgo: "you're so cute. it's a pity you're made of meat."
  • Libra: "you're beautiful when you hate the world."
  • Scorpio: "I AM COMPLETELY CALM!"
  • Sagittarius: "I asked if you were cold, I didn't ask for your life story."
  • Capricorn: "oh, look! it's your honour!"
  • Aquarius: "it's just hot leaf juice."
  • Pisces: "....and DIE."

Ok so, at first I was going to answer this ask in short, but then in the end I wrote a long ass paragraph and oh well lol. I thought I’ll make this into a normal post instead.

So, I posted this picture on my blog before…

I’m one of the admins of a Zutara fanpage on facebook, and the other admin posted that picture. And wow I just thought that you guys gotta know about this. I was quite surprised about this, it was hard to believe that maybe this could be a miracle and answer to us all zutarians hahaha.

Answer to the question/ask plus other explanations I added :

Yeah I watched that part again, streaming online though. So that’s why I asked if anyone could watch it again from the DVD, since it’s HD and you can see it clearer.

You might be right, but then I took a closer look at it again and, urgh it’s so hard to explain it, umm I mean… Katara’s hand’s posture/angle looked too tilt to Zuko’s hand (as if she was actually holding his hand). So it’s like it would be too forced if it’s just a coincidence I think. Because normally, when someone is just standing, their hands would go just limp… not tilting to the left side (since Zuko was on her left side).

Plus, it’s quite a catch that when this happened, Aang wasn’t there. He was missing, and that’s why they went to that bar kind of place to find June.

Oh and also, I remember the episode when they went to the ember island players, Zuko did sit besides Katara. Remember when Aang asked Zuko to move aside so he could sit besides Katara? And Zuko was like, “Just sit next to me, what’s the big deal?”.

Lol look at how pissed/annoyed Aang looked.

Now this is when Aang asked Zuko to move aside or so like that. Zuko’s expression kinda changed a bit, Idk he looked pretty annoyed by Aang. And can’t you see Katara’s smug face? hahaha, seriously I don’t know what’s going on here but something is hella weird.

I don’t know really, I think since the episode “the southern raiders”, I do believe something was going on between Zuko and Katara. Seriously, there were so many details that you could see, there were quite a lot of suspicion.

Oohh yess and I won’t even forget the part when the actors (ember island), Katara and Jet was flirting on the stage… Well we all know that Katara did hook up with Jet in the past and sure as hell she’s embarrassed about that. After that scene, she looked away to the right and like, cover her left cheek with her hand right? As if she was so embarrassed by that scene… and who was sitting on her left side? Zuko.

Also, after all that “zutara scene tease” Aang got jealous and angry and went out to the balcony. You guys would of course remember right, that he suddenly kissed Katara? And Katara got a bit irritated and almost yelled at him that she was just feeling “confused”?

Ok so yeah, something is seriously going on between Katara and Zuko since he helped her finding her mother’s killer. But for sure, we all know that Zuko was the first one that tried to get closer to her since he joined the group. In fact, out of all the people in the group, even the avatar (who he had been chasing like hell all around the world), Katara was the one that he kept trying to get closer to.

It’s also weird how when he just joined the group he already saved Katara from the falling rocks. I do bet you all know which one that is. And not to also mention, that Zuko pushed Suki first out of the way to get to Katara. Someone already posted about this, I forgot which blog but yeah.

I think I need to re-watch some episodes and pay more attention to the details. I guess that’s it for now…

I was wondering if you knew any cool fanfics that don't have any real sort of shipping (or shipping mainly being hinted or background?)

You came to the right place.  Even though I deeply love certain ships, I am primarily a gen writer, and I seek out and cherish the little bit of genfic I find.  It’s few and far between in this fandom, unfortunately, and most of them are short, which is reflected in this rec list.

Another Brother by AvocadoLove: It was a mission of revenge. There weren’t supposed to be any survivors, but Chief Hakoda couldn’t bring himself to kill the Fire Nation boy. Against his better judgment, he brought him home. A Zuko joins the Water Tribe story. 224,540 words, WIP [Fanfiction.net]

This is one of the best fics in the fandom, bar none.  It’s long, plotty, and character driven, full of family politics and family bonds.  Just an amazing fic.

Aftermath by @somariel: Iroh receives word of the Gaang’s victories and gives someone a well-earned tongue-lashing.  2661 words [AO3]

Iroh visits Ozai in prison and gives him a piece of his mind.

The Airbending Master by Lizbee: Teaching airbenders is not the same as restoring the Air Nomads. 354 words [AO3]

Short and sweet pre-comics fic about Aang teaching airbending Ty Lee.

Gilded Green by Caelum Blue: At the end of Iroh’s Siege, the Dai Li decide to test their brainwashing abilities on a Fire Nation soldier. They don’t know that their guinea pig-rat happens to be a supposedly-dead prince. First in a series. AU, DaiLi!LuTen.  96,189 words, WIP [AO3]

A long, plotty take on one of my favorite nightmare AU scenarios. Full of well developed and interesting OCs, overtly creepy and unsettlingly domestic by turns. Great fic.

Tea with Destiny by AvocadoLove: After the shock of Lu Ten’s death, Iroh makes a fateful journey into the Spirit World. The tea there is exquisite, but the company may give Iroh a run for his money. 2,659 words [Fanfiction.net]

Beautiful fic, just read.

Lessons in Thin Air by Lisse: What Zuko learns at the Western Air Temple, whether he wants to or not. 1,293  words [Fanfiction.net]

This short character study about Zuko and the gaang packs a real punch.

Five Generations of Facepalms by Lazy8: It’s a curse every generation wishes on the next one at some point in their lives. The Fire Nation royal family is no exception. 2859 words [AO3]

Fire Nation Royal Family comedy about the ways the children manage to appall their parents.  Al kinds of fun.

The Dragon Incident by Wrongfun: Everytime Aang, Katara and Toph had some business to do, they dumped their kids in Zuko’s court. Cue, chaos. 4638 words [AO3]

Very very funny look at Zuko attempting to babysit the gaang’s offspring.  Suyin wants a dragon.  Druk, Zuko, and the architecture of the palace suffer.

Five Ways Toph Created Her Own Family (Whether She Liked It or Not) by lady ganesh: [Dreamwidth]

Wonderful Toph character study about building a family of choice and becoming an adult.

Eight Principals of Yong by psocoptera: The pen is mightier than the sword, or how Zuko saves the day via the power of good penmanship. 3686 words  [AO3]

Amazing post Last Agni Kai Zuko character study about Zuko and Katara figuring out what to o next with the Fire Nation.

Red is the Color of the End of the World by @sholiofic: Post-series, Katara is adjusting to the new shape of the world. They all are. 4241 words [AO3]

Immediately post-canon Katara character study, lush, beautiful, and a touching exploration of friendship.

The Ember Island Portraits: Katara offers Zuko friendship by repeatedly doing something that annoys him. 1666 words [AO3]

I am such an enormous sucker for Katara and Zuko friendship fics, and this is one of the very best.

On Ember Island Zuko and Katara are sneaking around. They're in Kataras room abt to get ;) when Suki knocks on the door and Zuko has to hide in the closet listening to Suki talk Kataras ear off. Whether or not Suki finds him is up to you...

This was really sloppily written, and probably a little wrong in the whole knowledge part of Avatar?? I don’t know?? Thanks for the request though, love talking to you by the way!

His lips were hot against her neck. The feeling of his skin against hers making her feel hot and bothered. There were only a few barriers between them at the moment, Zuko’s pants, and Katara’s wrappings. Other than that, nothing was in their way.

Zuko left kisses in his wake down her throat, biting occasionally at her skin. Most likely going to leave some hickies that she would have to heal. The pleasure was delicious to her. Katara wrapped her legs around his waist, feeling him against her thigh through his pants. She wanted this. She needed this.

Katara felt him as he slipped lower and lower, leaving kisses all down her body. A path that he had left. She moaned into his hand as he caressed her abdomen with his hands, suckling on her skin. This was too much. It felt so good. She started to pant with need. When he was about to unravel her underwrappings, they heard a noise. They instantly stopped. It was a knock.

“Katara? Are you in there?” It was Suki. “Can I come in?”

Katara panicked and lifted Zuko’s head up back to her. “You have to go. Now.”

Zuko groaned and grabbed at his clothes. There wasn’t any time, Katara heard the door slowly creak open. Katara pointed to the closet, she made a motion of ‘go in there’ with her hands. Zuko ran into the closet and shut it quietly behind him. Katara got up and grabbed at her clothes. There wasn’t any time to put them on, so she just threw them back on the ground.

Suki walked in. “Hey.” She smiled at Katara. Katara blushed.

“Hi.” She answered. Suki looked around the room, nothing new. She looked down at Katara’s clothes and raised an eyebrow.

“Why aren’t you dressed?”

Katara tried to swallow the lump in her throat. “Well, it was really hot. It is gods awful hot in here, so I decided to just–y’know, strip down?” Katara cringed inwardly at her words. Suki nodded, she understood.

“Hey, wait.” Suki walked up to Katara and pointed to the hickies on her neck. “What are those?” Katara swiped at Suki’s fingers.

“They’re just bug bites, Suki.” Katara snapped. “What did you need to talk about?”

Suki put her hands on her hips. Katara knew at that moment–she messed up. Suki, of course, knew those weren’t bug bites. She knew that Suki knew they were hickies, mainly because Sokka gave Suki hickies and sometimes they were very visible. Katara sighed.

“Yeah. I know.” Katara looked at her bare feet. Suki giggled. Katara looked up at Suki and raised a thin eyebrow. “What?”

“I never knew Aang was old enough to know how to give hickies.” She giggled. “Man, that’s something new.”

Katara heard a noise in the closet, she coughed loudly to cover up whatever noise Zuko had made. “Yeah, Aang. He’s pretty knowledgeable.” Katara cringed again. Knowledgeable, what the hell, Katara?

Suki’s giggles went down. “So, how long have you and Aang been-”

“-we haven’t. Not that far.” Katara lied. How could Suki not see through her lies? Well, she did know about the hickies, but how does she not suspect…?

Oh.” Suki merely said. “Well, I wanted to talk to you about your brother.”

“If it’s about sex, Suki. I’m definitely not going to venture into that subject with you.” Katara felt the air get warmer. Zuko was probably still hung up on the whole Aang subject.

“It’s not that.” Suki puckered her lips, and looked down at the floor, “Well maybe it’s a little bit about that,” Katara made a noise, “No, hear me out though.” Suki paused. “Your brother always moans Yue’s name out whenever we…” She trailed off.

Katara held back a gag. “Are you here so you can learn more about Yue?”

Suki nodded. Katara sighed, she deflated a little bit. This was going to be a long talk.

“Yue was just the first girl Sokka was remotely interested in. Not that you’re not the other first-well you get what I mean. She was his first unofficial love, I guess. They weren’t really together. It’s really complicated, but long story short–she turned into the moon.” Katara smiled at Suki. “Is that all you wanted to know?”

Suki grimaced. “How did she turn into the moon?”

Katara internally screamed. How long was Suki going to be around? The air was getting warmer and warmer. She was surprised that Suki didn’t notice.

“She gave herself up to become the moon spirit. That’s about it.”

“Oh.” Suki thought hard for a moment. “Okay. That’s it.” Suki smiled at Katara brightly.

As she walked away she said over her shoulder, “By the way, I know Zuko is in the closet.”

Katara smacked her forehead.

zc-fangirl13  asked:

Do you think Katara felt some pressure to date Aang since he was the Avatar and he liked her? To be honest Aang seemed to get everything he wanted he never really faced life he ran away from his problems till they got better. He didn't try to make them better he had others figure things out or he'd take the easy way out. So do you think Katara felt obligated to be with him?

It’s really hard for me to say she felt pressured, given that we never saw the relationship from her perspective. It was told through Aang’s lens, and never from a point of view outside of him. In my opinion, Katara never felt pressured because she was never given much of a choice in the matter. The creators may have toyed with the idea of zutara, and even included some symbolism of that, but from Katara’s fortune and the subsequent ending of The Fortune Teller to The Ember Island Players calling Katara the Avatar’s girl, she seemed destined to be only his. How can we say she felt any pressure, when it was never shown how she felt about the relationship?

Idk… I feel like that’s a crappy answer, but I’ve thought about this for a few days now and can’t think of a time when she seemed obligated…After Season 1, she never acted like she was interested in him… or the interaction (if romantic) was extremely contrived.

@araeph and @peacockarehot do y’all have anything to add or say? I’m not the greatest with the receipts.

I didn't like how in LOK, Zuko and Toph were treated like celebrities (deservingly so) but Katara was just treated like a normal person, she went through the same things Zuko and Toph did, she helped save the world just like they did, she even saved Zuko's life, I didn't like how Katara was treated like a nobody basically, she also deserved a statue, I think Bryke just wanted her to be with Aang and that's it, after that it seemed like they had no use of her anymore, this really pisses me off.

Yeah, it recently occurred to me that Katara was basically reduced to the status of Ta Min. Her most important role was being the Avatar’s wife. Both of them seemed to not cope well when the Avtar died. Ta Min just lived out her days at Ember Island and Katara just seems lonely at the North Pole.
