“I am Moana of Motunui. Aboard my boat, I will sail across the sea and restore the heart of Te Fiti.” -Moana (2016)

“I am Diana of Themyscira, daughter of Hippolyta. Your wrath upon this world is over.” -Wonder Woman (2017)

Female leads are so important.

I just want to take a moment and appreciate these two women in their movies. They are strong, courageous, defiant, and independent. When I first saw Moana, I cried about seven times. It was so refreshing to see a character that didn’t need to rely on anyone else to save the day besides themselves. And recently, when I watched Wonder Woman, I got emotional all over again because I noticed similar parallels between Diana and Moana.

They both are introduced in their youth. Moana wants to be out on the ocean, and Diana wants to train to be an Amazon warrior. But they have their parents that set them on different paths. Moana’s parents want her to be the chief, and Hippolyta doesn’t want Diana to train so that she can be protected. Upon reaching older age, both Moana and Diana set out on journey’s that they know they must embark on. Diana leaves Themyscira with Steve to defeat Ares and end the raging world war. Moana leaves Motunui to find Maui and restore the heart of Te Fiti to save her people and her island. Both women are so determined to complete what they set out to do, and when it comes a time for them to do it on their own, they completely kick ass. Even when they are set back by obstacles, they keep pushing on. They both defeat a god, (respectively to each cultures mythology). And in the end, they both understand that love is what can save the world. Diana learned that in her endeavors, and it was love that Moana showed that restored Te Ka into Te Fiti.

There is so much to love about these two, and I could go on about how many parallels there are. I really adore and appreciate these strong female icons. Both movies are definitely my top favorites of all time.

Gruvia is canon.

ALL THE CUTE.

The Fairy Tail fandom is in a sensitive place right now. Some people are happy, some are disappointed, and others are somewhere in the middle. That is the case with the Gruvia scene as well, since many of us expected something more. However, the thing that most people agree on is that Gruvia is indeed canon. Lets take a look at the breakdown.

We see a drunk Juvia attempting to take off her clothes, in a manor very reminiscent of Gray stripping. As we all know, Juvia adopted this habit while they were living together back in the Avatar arc. Gray’s reaction to her stripping now strongly contrasts his reaction back then. He used to have NO reaction. But since it was confirmed Gray does have feelings for Juvia back in chapter 499, his reaction to her showing her body off now is very profound. We first see Gray blushing while exclaiming that she needs to stop this act. Adding fuel to the fire, Gildarts visibly ogles the increasingly naked Juvia. Gray was not having that. Not. One. Bit.

Then Gray continues to physically drag Juvia somewhere else privately, criticizing her for publicly stripping.  It’s ironic because Juvia has scolded Gray for stripping in the past on numerous occasions, but now the shoe is on the other foot. Gray has taken on Juvia’s previous role, acting protective, and embarrassed, implying that Gray’s feelings are mirroring Juvia’s once again.Gray also dragged Juvia off, just as Juvia had once done to him when she wanted to be alone with him before the GMG. Back on topic, Juvia apologizes to Gray, as he inspects her body, which leads into a conversation about their respective scars. This is important because, since the beginning of Fairy Tail, Mashima-sensei has highlighted how significant scars are when it comes to Gray. Not only that, but these scars are proof of how far the two are willing to go for one another. A symbol of their love for each other.

Gray asks if Juvia can have Wendy remove the scar, but Juvia doesn’t mind it and points out the fact that he still has his, too. Gray immediately retorts back saying it’s different because he’s a man and she’s a woman. Scrambling to justify himself, Gray mentions Juvia’s body, and is cut off by her questioning him.

Gray is now the one ogling her body with a huge blush as she sits in a seductive pose staring up at him. Unable to come up with a good response, he embarrassingly states that she is his. Still having elements of a tsundere, Gray tries to play the situation off while being heavily flustered. Despite this, Juvia understands him and becomes love struck. In the Japanese raw, Gray says “ore no mono da”, which is translated as “you belong to me” or “you are mine”. However it’s a line that only implies the subject, so when taking context into consideration, Gray could also be saying that Juvia’s body is his as well. Meaning Gray is actually asking for/suggesting sex. That’s a big deal for a character like him.

Regardless of translation, Gray is into Juvia, and they have most likely been in a relationship for quite some time considering this is a year after the war. Gray wouldn’t be saying something so blatantly sexual to her if they weren’t already together, and Gray is also so comfortable stating something this openly to her. He would not have waited a year to answer her, so either the answer we have all been waiting for was off paneled (which still makes no sense), or it was chapter 499 as a whole.

In Mashima-sensei’s mind, 499 was an answer. Gray stated that Juvia wasn’t a friend, that he wanted to protect her no matter what, and Juvia said Gray’s words made her happy. Juvia understood at that point that their feelings were mutual. 453 was just the same. Gray was grateful to her for always being by his side, and asked her to wait until after the war for his answer. She smiled knowingly there, aware even then what Gray meant, and what his answer would be.

Smooth Gray smooth

In addition, in the Harvest Festival art book, Mashima-sensei commented under the Gruvia postcard, which was labeled autumn of romantic love, that he went on the attack with this specific drawing, and he drew it when the main story was about Gruvia. Coupled with the most recent twitter sketches, including the one which showed an intimate moment between a blushy Gray and Juvia, their foreheads touching and both smiling happily, showcases that he had already given us the answer long ago.

Also, after Wendy overheard Gray’s words to Juvia, she had the exact same, flustered reaction to what Gray said, as she did when she overheard Levy mention a “baby” to Gajeel. Thus, Mashima-sensei is implying that Gray and Juvia are also in an adult relationship. Lucy had been narrating about other couples, and what had happened in the year. She states that Gray and Juvia have also gotten close/along, which parallels Gajeel and Levy (who are explicitly canon with the same “getting along” line). In official English translations in anime and manga, the phrase “getting along well” often is used as a comment on a couples romantic relationship.Their relationship over the year timeskip has likely been slowly progressing in a private but known manner. When talking about relationships, it is clear Lucy sees Gray and Juvia as a couple.

Another common concern that has been raised, is about Gray going out on a hundred year quest. Bear in mind, the 100 year quest is not a quest that lasts for a hundred years. It is a quest that has been available for a hundred years and not been completed, which indicates the difficulty of the quest. It was something Gildarts could not do alone. However, we have five incredibly powerful mages embarking on the quest. We see Juvia in the guild interacting with her fellow guild mates without concern. This indicates a secure status in their relationship.

Not to mention, Mashima-sensei clearly wanted to end the series on Team Natsu for nostalgic reasons. A couple does not always have to go on a mission together.

In conclusion, it is possible we might receive extra content in the future, as Mashima-sensei tweeted that he was still working on further FT-related projects. Also, canon is not defined by babies and marriage alone. Canon is defined by whatever is official in the story. And it is official that Gray and Juvia share mutual feelings, Gray himself states in this very chapter that Juvia is his.

The best thing that happened to me in 2017 was when I decided to let go and walk away from lower vibrational environments/people and embark on a new journey of self-love and healing. My life has been golden ever since.

  • hoseok is an aquarius-pisces cusp, meaning he displays traits from both signs. i think this is why he molds so well with yoongi’s pisces sun. they both have a compassionate, whimsical personality and share a similar outlook on life. and with pisces being a creative sign, there’s no wonder they create amazing music together
  • venus determines what you look for in a partner, and hoseok’s pisces venus draws him instantly to yoongi. he is attracted by the sensitive soft type, and yoongi is exactly that. in many ways, he views yoongi as his ideal type.
  • yoongi’s aries venus wants someone active, fun, and independent. hoseok’s aquarius sun and mars provide that excitement that makes him tick

cool lil things to drop in your writing...

that won’t change your character but will change how your readers feel about themselves:

acne/acne scars/scarring in general-

so a lot of people love to write YA Fiction (us included!) but I think sometimes our teenage characters are given such huge tasks and embark on such wild missions that we forget that they are just that– teenagers! and one of the big things about being a teenager is all the hormonal changes that are going on (books love to focus on the sex/romance stuff), but we forget to mention things such as acne. even having a brief description of a character like “they scooped back their curls and I could see the acne that dotted their jaw” can make a world of a difference to a young teen who’s reading that book and struggling with having cystic acne. imagine if one of your favorite, most other-worldly beautiful characters had acne and they were still considered beautiful? you know how much it would rock people’s worlds to see that imperfect skin isn’t only found in villains?

gapped teeth/crooked teeth-

now I’ve seen this one more often, but never too much. all i have to say is that braces are expensive (i know from personal experience jfc) and getting your smile straightened isn’t something that’s readily available to everyone. let one of your characters reflect that, a whole backstory you don’t even have to come up with.

beauty marks/moles/birth marks:

we know that cindy crawford and marilyn monroe have their famous beauty marks (we have piercings named after them) on their faces that enhance their beauty. having a unique placement of a characters mole/birth mark/beauty mark can give them a whole other dimension/back story you may not have thought of right away.

The Pilgrim (Part 1)

This is the first half of a Zimbits soulmate AU, where you can feel the pull of your soulmate like a compass. This is a first draft, so no corrections have been made so far. I just wanted to throw it out there. There will be a second and final part to this- and I’ll do my best to write it soon.

Dear Mama and Coach,

I’m sorry to leave with only a note, but this is something I have to do. I left for my pilgrimage. I know I’m way too young, but I couldn’t wait. … I think my soulmate is dying. I felt the pull stop for a full minute. It never happened before. I can’t wait another four years before seeking them! I hope you understand.

Also, I didn’t tell y’all because… I think my soulmate may be a man.

I hope you’re not too mad at me. I’ll call.

I love you both,

– Dicky

North. The pull had always pointed North. Sometimes, when Eric changed cities, he tried to triangulate the feel, but there was never enough difference in what he felt to pinpoint a precise location on a map. His soulmate could be in any of the states above Georgia, or- well, they could live further North. He wondered what would be worse for his parents, that his soulmate was a man, or that he was a Yankee.

He’d stressed about it for years but, now that he was stuck on a bus for who knew how long, he couldn’t stop worrying. He fidgeted with the cheap pilgrimage kit he’d bought at Atlanta. A map of the United States, a plastic ruler, a tiny pencil and a miserable looking compass that didn’t seem to point in the same direction if he shook it a bit. It was all he could afford, since the bus ticket from Madison to Atlanta, then Atlanta to… wherever, took most of his “borrowed” money.

That was another thing. His parents would be so mad when they noticed he took from his savings account. That money was supposed to go to his skating class- or more recently, his hockey equipment.

Maybe he could have asked. Maybe they’d understood, and offered more, and Coach would have lent him his own brass compass, the one inherited from his own father, the one he used to follow the pull until he found his own soulmate. Maybe his mother would have kissed him on the forehead and maybe she’d have offered to ride with him wherever the pull led him- North, North, always North…

But maybe not.

It wasn’t something Eric wanted to risk. The steadiness of the pull had stopped, for just a minute, maybe more, but that was enough to change Eric’s own life. He had someone, somewhere, whose soul was compatible with his- who was maybe a lover, a friend- and that someone’s life had blinked.

He held back his nervous tears, fidgeted with the compass once more.

Instagram Is A Tiny Speck In The Ginormous Oil Painting of Life

One topic I think about obsessively: Instagram. More specifically, the psychological effect it has on me.

A while ago I posted a tweet saying I felt conflicted about social media, and the responses I got were surprising. People said that Facebook gave them anxiety, only going on certain sites when their mood was stable, whilst others deleted and re-activated their accounts regularly.

I’ve always had a love-hate relationship with these platforms but they have so many pros that it makes them hard to quit. They connect me to like-minded people, are informative, make me laugh and give me an instant connection to my fanbase. It’s amazing to feel a level of relation in real time. However, in the last year I’ve noticed that every time I go on Instagram I feel kind of flat + zapped afterwards, like somebody has literally sat on my brain for 5 minutes. It’s oddly deflating.

Social media apps are designed to make us addicted to them. Human behaviour is reward based and each time we get a “like” or a message, our brains release a hit of dopamine, which makes us feel rrrreeeeal good (until the dopamine level drops and we feel real bad). Instagram is basically digital meth. So, for the past year I’ve been deleting the app off my phone for large periods of time, then re-downloading it if I want to post something. Interestingly, the feeling I get upon returning is always the same: I’ve missed nothing!

I understand social media’s appeal most when in relation to constructing a fantasy world. I’ve used it as a creative tool on every album I’ve made. Tumblr was key to “Electra Heart” and Twitter was key to “FROOT”. But what at first seemed like an opportunity to communicate our thoughts in an uncensored way has become a vehicle for us to present ourselves in the way that we would like to be seen by others. And this is what makes me feel weird about posting sometimes. A review I read of the film ’Ingrid Goes West’ nailed this feeling: “We use these platforms to lie and intentionally curate our lives”. The curating part hits a chord with me. It makes me feel icky, because I’ve surely, if subconsciously, done this - the majority of us have if we’re using the platform. How do I get around that and use it in a healthier way? Do I just delete the whole thing or do I need to be aware of the reason I want to post something? i.e. Is it to share an image I love, or is to make people think of me in a certain way? The latter creeps me out. It scares me.

Recently, a friend said he had been going through a difficult period, so he hadn’t gone on Instagram for about a month. “Why would I? Everyone is having such a great time”. Ohhh, the digital illusion of happiness. OK, some people are genuinely having a great time, and they want to share that great time with you, but they’re not having a good time all the time. And that’s the key to remember when we’re embarking on a scrolling spree into the darkest depths of existential hell at 2am. Social media is a tiny speck in the ginormous oil painting of human life. We all have problems. We present the good parts of ourselves because it’s anathema to document the true nature of our lives, which inevitably consist of moments of disappointment, loneliness and embarrassment. None of these things look pretty or cool (no, not EVEN if you put the Mayfair filter on top of them), and I can totally see how it all started out innocently. We all love sharing special moments, but because these moments hold social currency online, we’re now doing only that. It’s easy to see how people can feel disappointed when their own lives don’t measure up in a similar way.

We’re still in the infancy of the internet, trying to navigate technology in a way that is beneficial to our lives, but I sense a shift towards a desire to portray our lives more realistically. I notice more people sharing an experience or story in the caption of a selfie/ photograph that provides more of a picture of their life than the actual photo ever could. But I still wonder how we can evolve online culture into a space that is less image-focused/ self-driven, because I worry about the psychological effects that an image-focused culture might have on a young person’s self-esteem. 20 years ago, posting a stream of pictures of only my face would have been considered borderline narcissistic, but now it’s normal. And I’m not judging this - I’m talking from the perspective of someone who has done this a’plenty and who has been a part of that culture, particularly at the height of an album campaign. Maybe all Instagram has done is magnify what seems to have always been true, that humans value beauty to excess.

Ok, I’ll end this post by saying this: If I never go on Instagram again, my life won’t lack anything because of it. Assuming I use it 20 minutes a day, I’ll get back 122 hours a year - for free! The reality is, I’ll probably continue to use it, but it’s important to me to see these platform for what they are, not what they appear to be. They’re addictive, comparative, take my time and give little back in return.

I’ll leave you with my fave comment which came from @FKASimon.

Quite, Simon, Quite.

Love, Marina

Cut off from Grand Moff Tarkin’s leash, Vader is free to terrorize the crew of his fleet, starting with the hapless Admiral Ozzel. After his blunder in alerting the Rebels to his presence, thus giving them the time to put a shield and force the Empire to embarking on a costly ground assault, Vader decides to take matters into his own hands, relieving Ozzel of his post via long-distance Force choke and simultaneously using the opportunity to promote Captain Piett to the rank of Admiral.
