email subtext

I'm just sitting here, wondering what the reaction would've been if Carver era was fanfic on ao3 based on Kripke+Gamble era. Imagine an author who updates on regular basis for more than five years under the tag 'Eventual Destiel' 'Slowest Burn'. Were there ever a fic like that?

OH MY GOD. That would be the WORST FIC. CAN YOU EVEN IMAGINE?!

If the show had ended after s7? But, like, the writing staff got together and decided to carry on writing episodes as a fic?

If they DID tag it “eventual destiel” at least they’ve put the promise in writing, though. I’d probably grudgingly stick it out.

Also, in fic format, it’s a lot harder to hide the subtext. They can’t stick a beer sign in the background of a scene and just assume the viewers will notice it. They’d have to find different references and cues and ways to work them into work into the writing.

Another benefit would be they’re not limited to 42 minutes of screen time per episode. They could write scenes and things that currently have to happen “offscreen” for time constraints of the medium.

BUT REALLY THAT WOULD BE THE MOST FRUSTRATING FIC TO READ EVER.

Fanfic is an entirely different medium, with an entirely different set of expectations by the readers. If the episodes were expanded to fic format, would we already consider destiel canon? I mean, how do you write those Dean/Cas staring scenes without making it sound just a lil bit romantic? How do you write Dean praying to Cas and make it sound like anything other than longing? As someone who writes fic and has spent A LOT OF TIME trying to describe their facial expressions, their body language, and their tone of voice, I don’t think it’s possible.
