email development

I have a VA question, do you have any suggestions for how to start? Because I love doing silly voices and stuff, but if I bring it up to my parents, they go on about how I've already got plans that I can't change at the drop of a pin. Even if I'm not doing it for my real job, I still want to start; even if it's just for fun, but I can't figure out how. (Sorry if I rambled for too long)

Ahhhhh that’s a good question! Honestly it can be a little hard to think about where to start, but I would recommend you practice whenever you can! Watch how certain people speak, do some theater character studies, parody some people you love! After that, I recommend you email everyone in the bloody world.

Just kidding! But seriously, the way to go is getting yourself out there. Practice so you have something to show people, and then once you have that demo reel, just see who needs help! Casting call, behind the VA’s, all these sites are really great, and if you have any nearby gaming cons, try emailing indie game developers and see if they need voices!

Ok i know you are married and have kids and stuff so how did you meet your husband?

Interesting story (at least to me.) I used to work at The Washington Post and while I was there I wrote an article about parental expectations and arranged marriage. It got a huge response, like crazy big at the time: calls from NBC and MTV wanting to do a segment (I said nooooo)  and weirdos proposing marriage, and like hundreds of people trying to give me advice about what to do with my life and also people being assholes and emailing stuff like GET OUT OF THIS COUNTRY etc. etc.

So anyway, this guy called me right after the article printed, and started asking me mega intellectual questions about the article, like how I decided to write it and what it was like to pitch it and whether I thought the institution of arranged marriage was altered when the structures that support it are altered, etc. etc. He was super polite, but I was on deadline so I was like “yo, if you have stuff to say, ust email me” and then I hung up, thinking I’d never hear from him. tbh I was pretty cold.

And then the next day, I got this incredibly well written but brief email from this same guy. So after a few days I wrote him back. Then a few days later, he wrote me back. And then I replied. And this went on for about 8 or 9 months. And these emails developed into these crazy long mini books where we talked about everything, like politics and religious and philosophy and theology and movies that were stupid and books we were reading and music we were listening to and our crazy families. And eventually we started chatting on the phone about all of this stuff, but like NEVER acknowledging that we kind of liked each other b/c we valued the friendship way too much.

And after a few months I was like “Shit, i like this dude a lot a lot but:

A. He totally sees me as a friend and I am doomed to love him in unrequited fashion until I am dead

B. He might be a total troll with scales, I have no idea.

You have to realize this was 2003/2004, aka the dark ages before the facebook and the tumblr and the twitter and so people didn’t like throw up their pictures on line b/c we were all suspicious back then. So like everything I knew about him I figured out my carefully parsing his emails like a damned secret agent and what I learned is:

A. He was 6′1 (he somehow mentioned this but not in a braggy way)

B. He was ripped (b/c he did triathlons and you have to be at least a little ripped to do triathlons)

C. He had nice teeth (I don’t remember how I learned this, but I did.)

But still, that’s not much to go on so even thoughI thought he was the coolest,  I am going to be 100% honest with you guys: I was worried he was ugly af. And you know, I guess I can totally love someone who is ugly af, but what if he didn’t love me? What if he thought I was ugly? Or he didn’t like my scales and horns?  It was super angst guys, I can’t even explain.

Anyway, after like 10 months, I finished college at UCLA and moved back to DC and this guy and I finally met in person and I still remember meeting him for the first time, and him walking toward me and me thinking “my, what broad shoulders he has” and “Ok, he actually has a nice face” and “SHIT HE IS A HANDSOME DEVIL AND IF HE DOESN’T THINK I AM THE BEST THING SINCE SLICED BREAD I WILL BE SO SAD.”

So we started going out and despite the fact that I wore ugly-ass socks, loved sock puppets and dragged him for knowing nothing about indie rock (he still doesn’t fyi SHAME) he liked me. And despite the fact that he was obsessed with boring sportsball, didn’t like LOTR and was always talking about dead dudes like Winston Churchill and Theodore Roosevelt, he made me laugh like no one else and I liked him too. And eventually he asked me to marry him and I was like “FINALLY” and exactly 2 years and 4 months after he first started writing to me we got married. Now we have 2 kids have been married for 11 years. He is still obsessed with sportsball and I still think his lack of appreciation for LOTR is criminal, but godwilling we will be together until we are old and grumpy and yelling at kids to get off our lawn.

That was probably more than you bargained for, but there it is, the story of how I met my husband.

The Gang and video games
  • Emily: "It's only a waste of time if you suck at it"
  • Matt: *gets way too invested in roleplay and cries when a side character dies*
  • Jessica: "Um, duh! Of course I'm doing it for attention. Why would I have a gaming channel otherwise, lmao!"
  • Mike: "Hey! Stop talking about my mother like that or I'll shoot you in the head!"
  • Josh: *mods his game to the point of it being unplayable*
  • Sam: "Wait... That's not how human body works. There's no way she would make this jump. You know what, I need to try this out, I'll be right back-"
  • Ashley: *reads every piece of lore available and spends more time writing meta about her favourite games than playing them*
  • Chris: *discovers every bug and glitch unintentionally and emails the developers with ideas how to fix them*

I had a dream about an endearing new television comedy about a wry British woman in London (Amanda Abbington) struggling with pretty much everything in her life who develops an email relationship with a wise and kindly police officer in Red Deer, Alberta (Yannick Bisson) because their email addresses are one letter off and they trade spam and family forwards every day.

The wry British woman tells the police officer about how she bought some outrageously expensive apples at the market in an attempt to impress strangers with her commitment to buying organic, but the bag broke when she stepped out of the tube station and she watched her expensive apples roll all the way down the hill to the next tube station. The police officer started to respond, but then had to go because someone reported that a drunken moose was licking his car.

Kuroko Tetsuya: He stood at the entrance of the gates connected to your plane, externally composed, but internally worrying and fidgeting about. He held Nigou in his practice bag, shushing sporadically when he made a shuffling noise or a whine. He hasn’t met you in over six months, the last time being the Winter cup where your school had come to compete. You were the coach’s daughter and manager of the team, and the two of you had bumped into each other outside the stadium after Seirin won against your school. Instead of anger, or discomfort, you had gone up to him, thanked him for a great game and wished to play again together. He fell for your quiet grace, and exchanged emails and phone numbers, developing a closer relationship.

The intercom called out your plane number, and notified the enitre building of the exact time you and the rest of the passengers would be out. He readjusted the straps of his bag, the weight getting heavier and heavier each minute.

“Kuroko-kun!” Your voice reached out and was heard above the crowded people all rejoicing at being with their loved ones or being back home again. Kuroko put his bag down, stretching his arms out in time for you to jump into his arms, holding onto his neck as tightly as possible. He breathed onto your neck, smiling at your obvious excitement patting your hair down.

“Hello, ____-san, it’s been a while. I’ve missed you, a lot.”

Kise Ryouta: He tapped his foot up and down, anxiously waiting for your arrival. He had just come straight from his shoot, blond hair wind blown, with correction make up, and whatnot. He held a bouquet of flowers, although very uncommon in Japan, he had wanted to make you feel loved, since the two of you had been lacking it several days now. You were busy with your own school, and your own job, and the additional fact that you lived in a different country put a damper to his plans, and so endless texting, calling, and facetiming were the norm for the both of you. His blue phone rang, signaling either a message from you, or his manager. It was the latter, which greatly disappointed him, eyes downcast, he picked up the phone,

“I know, I know, we’re on a tight schedule, but I cant miss this day, y'know that mane-cchi san!”

“I understand, Kise-kun, but the producer really needs you here, asap. The next filming is soon and if you don’t make it by 3:00, you’re in big trouble! We’re both in big trouble!”

“She has to be coming out now! Just give us five more minutes! I pro-” He was abruptly cut off by a tapping on his shoulder.

“Hi, Ryouta-kun!” There you were, adorned in comfy clothes, in all your glory, standing before him. He missed his chance to be the first one to go to you, being caught up with his manager. He enveloped you in a hug, letting out a squeal.

“Ah! ____-cchi! I’ve missed you so much!”

Midorima Shintaro: He pushed up his glasses, sighing at the delay of your plane. It had already been thirty minutes since he got there, and the lucky item for the day was getting heavier and heavier on his back: a big backpack full of mineral rocks. He met you once at a school event, where they took in international students for a month, and was assigned in a group project together. He expected language barriers, of course, but you was a fluent speaker, being of Japanese descent. He disliked you at first, being a bit loud and certainly unappreciative of his lucky items. He was able to get to know you through Takao, when he invited you to practice, and watched you shoot some hoops.

He hasn’t seen you in months now, the last time being the day you had to leave the school, and the day he confessed to you. There was more urging on your part, but he succeeded nonetheless. He noticed you looking around, and pushing up his glasses once more, he quietly walked over to you, a bit of relief and embarrassment glazing over his cheek.

“_____.” Your eyes lit up, hands clasping his forearms, and movng in to hug and kiss your cheek.

“Shintaro, long time no see! It’s been too long; I missed you!” His cheeks were ablaze, though he tentatively set his arms around your waist.

“I-I have missed you, too, nanodayo.”

Aomine Daiki: He was already running late because of the ‘power nap’ he tried to take which turned into a three hour sleep, only awake since Satsuki was there to remind him with 47 messages your plane would be arriving soon. Still in a basketball jersey and sweat pants, he checked his phone every minute, watching for your message. Sighing angrily, he raced up the stairs of the airport, eyes swimming around, searching for your familiar face.

“You’re late, Daiki.” Foot tapping irritably on the surface of the concrete, arms crossed over your chest, and expression cloudy you stared at your huffing boyfriend. He grinned, scratching the back of his neck, footsteps slowing as he reached over to you. You were still as feisty as he could remember, and he couldn’t help but smirk at when you gave him an earful for being late to their practice game three months ago. Coming from a foreign country to play against one of Japan’s best, you were most excited to see how tough the competition would be for your boys, but first impressions were never your strong point. What started with a roocky start led to something definitely what you weren’t expecting.

“Ah, I fell asleep.” It was your turn to huff out a sigh of indignation.

“It’s been three months and that’s all you say to me?” He languidly stretched his arms towards you, bringing you into a tight grasp, and buried his head into the crook of your neck.

“I’ve missed you so damn much, babe.” You smiled, wrapping your arms around his toned waist. Drinking in the sight and feeling of your boyfriend, you let go, kissing him once.

“By the way, Satsuki-chan called. As punishment for being late, we’re going shopping together; all three of us!”

Murasakibara Atsushi: Snacking on his Maiubo, the two feet giant waited impatiently at the restaurant you two promised to meet up at. Since you were aware the purple haired boy wouldn’t be up for waiting at the airport, he might as well wait somewhere he was comfortable at. You raced to the restaurant, already ten minutes late your promised time. Pushing back your hair, your eyes scanned around the room for a tall, hungry purple boy. You spotted him on the table right near the kitchen, lazily talking to someone on the phone. His enormous figure was hunched, chin resting on the white table cover, and eyes half lidded. You gingerly walked over to him, nervousness finally resting in your stomach. You haven’t seen him for so long, it was like you were meeting him for the first time again. He noticed your footsteps, lilac eyes blinking up towards you.

“Aka-chin, I gotta go. _____ -chins finally here.” He promptly hung up, and slowly rose from his chair. Although it had only been ten minutes, every minute seemed like an hour to Murasakibara.

“You’re late, ____-chin.” Your cheeks turn red, as you walk closer towards him.

“Well, I wouldn’t have been late if you agreed to meet up somewhere near the airport.” He shrugged his shoulders, hands itching to touch you and embrace you tightly.

“I like this restaurant. It’s where we met.” You lunged at your boyfriend, burrying your face into his abdomen. Murasakibara could be so sweet without realizing it himself, and you figured you could forgive him for today.

“I missed you, you big giant.” He patted your head, bringing his arms around your figure.

“Me, too, ____-chin. But can we eat first? I’m starving.”

Akashi Seijurou: It’s been a few weeks since he was informed you were coming back for another two months. He initially thought to surprise you with him going to your home, but busy scheduling would not allow it, and so Akashi was forced to wait till your summer vacation started in May. Since his started on the end of July, and yours ended early August, he had plenty of time to use to introduce you to Japan and his friends, as well as obtain some time alone with each other. Coming straight from basketball practice, Akashi was still in his school uniform when he arrived at the airport. Practice ran a bit longer than expected, and he would have been late if he returned home to change his appearance. His red locks a bit damp from the shower, he waited patiently for you. You came out, a bit groggy and still jet lagged from the plane, looking for your boyfriend. Red immediately caught your eyes, and you wasted no time in throwing your arms around Akashi’s neck. He caught you by your waist, smiling down at you.

“Hello, _____. I’ve missed you terribly and I apologize for my appearance. We just finished practice.” You smiled, shaking your head in response.

“I don’t care about what you’re wearing Seijurou! I missed you so much; how is everyone? Are they all well?” Caressing your cheek, he answered each question with detail, knowing how much you enjoyed hearing about his friends and teammates. Taking your luggage, the two of you headed out to the elevator, leading to his black car.

“You must be tired, love, I’ll escort you home. We can talk more tomorrow, at this new restaurant that opened near my house. I’ll see you at seven.”

OKAY SO like two years ago I emailed the developers of The Darkest Faerie PS2 game (Idol Minds) because I REALLY wanted to know if there was a sequel in the works at all (and I’m impatient and just had to know) but today the vice president of Idol Minds finally responded to my email and I freaked out so hard

Anyway the short answer is no because of their deal with Sony and budgets etc

BUT the man I spoke with was nice enough to attach some of the artwork they were going to use for the sequel until it got scrapped, and I thought I’d share it here with the tag :——-)

SMME Hacking - The Business StartUp Process

Reflecting on the first couple of days of the new Startup and the process to start a business from scratch, again. It’s different.

So much has changed and so much of it is so much better. The online and digital tools available now are powerful and work well. The basic steps haven’t changed, but the way that you can now do it has, and that’s been interesting to reflect on.
Keeping true to the overall objective: “Let’s do this startup completely online, and follow the steps and process we would offer a SMME startup business to take” has been a good guideline to follow.
Trying to do all of it myself has been a lot more demanding.

So, the progress to get #StartUpv3 going has been good.

  1. Company Registration has begun and compliance is underway.
  2. Domain Registration done.
  3. Website Design and Development underway.
  4. Email setup and configurations completed.
  5. Corporate Identity underway.
  6. Company Profile underway.
  7. Social Media Channels setup and starting to be used for publishing.
  8. Invoicing Setup Done.
  9. First Client and Project (for free) completed.
  10. Sales and CRM in place.
  11. Pitching.
  12. Meetings.
  13. Coffees.
  14. Conversations.

Road ahead… many many more steps and parts to complete lie ahead. Having had a number of catch-up conversations and coffees to go with them, the opportunities are familiar and also very unexpected in some cases.
Good progress towards turning conversations into commercial agreements and projects now need to come into the planning for each day.

Speaking opportunities that offer some awareness and access to new potential clients also coming up, and a few really Interesting conversations after a conference this week means a lot more to add to the table. This is good. Now all I need to do is focus and chase the best opportunities to bill, and then nurture the other conversations and thought starters to the next phase - oh, and do the work too. That’s also important right?!

The journey has begun, and I’m on it, committed and going forward strong (with a limp in the throat) towards the First Billings and New Clients.

Save Me - Part 2 - Chapter 7

Once I got to the airport and all checked in, I sat down and got comfortable. I had a bit of a wait until it would be time to board so I pulled out my phone. I still needed to get back to Jared and I knew he would be waiting for me to let him know what was going on.

At the airport I had cell reception so I thought I would send Jared a text instead of an email. This way, no matter what he was doing and knowing his phone was pretty much attached to his hand, he’d get it right away.

Going into my contacts, I pulled up his name and opened a new text message.

- Good Morning, Sir! ☀️ Got your email just as I was told my taxi arrived, that’s why it took me so long to respond. I’m at the airport now, checked in and waiting to board, right on schedule.. Can’t wait to see you! 😚 -

Short and sweet. Perfect.

I was so not hungry earlier, honestly, my stomach was in knots, but at least I was smart enough to throw a banana in my bag just in case that changed. Which it did, now that the rush was over. Reaching in my bag I grabbed it and sat back eating as I scrolled through the news. Being away, I felt so disconnected from the rest of the world.

It had been about ten minutes and I got a notification that I had a new text message from Jared. Wow, that was fast! I must have caught him during his downtime.

- I’m happy to hear that baby girl. I’m on my way to do some press. Text me before before you take off. Then once you land at Heathrow. Have a safe flight baby! See you soon!! Xo -

Hearing from him put a smile on my face. I finished my banana then tossed my trash in the bin. Just as I was walked by back to my seat, they called for us to begin boarding. So far, the day was moving right along just as planned.

I was now one step closer.

Jared wanted me to text him right before I took off so I did that as soon as I sat in my seat on the plane.

- 🛫 Taking off! 💗 -

After watching to make sure the text went through, I turned my phone off.

As the plane took off, I laid my head against the headrest and tried to relax. Flying wasn’t ever my favorite activity but since it was a large part of my job I just dealt with it. Closing my eyes, I couldn’t help but smile as Jared’s image became clear as day behind my eyelids.

Flying into Heathrow again brought back memories of our good-bye just a few weeks ago. I remember thinking back then about where our relationship was and scared that things would change. And they did, but not in a negative way. We really seemed stronger and even closer despite being so far apart.

It was a test, I suppose, much like it’ll be a test to see how things go when we’re together again. That made me nervous all over again. If we were going to meet and spend time together like we did in Chicago, away from our lives and in our own little world, I wouldn’t be scared. But in this case, if I’m being honest with myself, I was. If only just a little bit.

I was nervous because I would be trying to mesh into HIS real life. Not that I know all that much but I did see a bit of that life already. And it’s crazy. Jared or probably more so Emma, runs his life like a tightly controlled ship. Every ounce of time was managed. I guess I wasn’t sure how I could see myself fitting in. To an outsider, his world is intimidating.

As the announcement was made we would be landing shortly, I grabbed my make-up bag from my purse and freshened up. Once I got off the plane, I would have enough time to hit the bathroom then would need to go through customs. My bags would be transferred to my connecting flight. Hopefully. Customs could take awhile and knowing my flight schedule was tight I knew I had to move quickly. The sooner I was in line the better.

When the doors opened, I bolted off the plane. I hate the pressure of being in a time crunch and although my schedule is often rushed, I will never get used to it. I fly so much, at least I know exactly where I need to go.

Sure enough, the line for customs was long but thankfully I knew that they usually moved pretty fast. Hopefully today would be no different. Remembering Jared wanted me to text him when I arrived, I pulled my phone out to text him.

- 🛬 I’m at Heathrow! Just waiting in line for customs. It’s moving pretty quick. I hope you’re having a good day! See you soon! 😘 -

Watching the clock count down and the like be not move, I started to stress a bit. Things were moving but slower than normal. Looking around, I hoped other agents would see the build up and call for help to get things moving again. I simply could not miss this flight! I was so preoccupied, I didn’t notice that Jared texted back.

- Got your text during an interview. Thank you for the update. Have a safe flight! Remember, Robert will be there waiting for you by baggage. See you soon baby girl! Xo -

Jared must have been a good luck charm for me because rights after that, things got moving along again and before I knew it, I was passing through the terminal to my gate. My panic at bay, I relaxed as I sat down at my gate and was again waiting to board. Looking at my flight information, this flight would be relatively quick which I was happy about. You don’t realize how exhausting a full day of travel is until you do it. No doubt once I landed in Norway, I’d be energized though.

Once we boarded it literally felt like we just took off and were already preparing to land again. Not that I was complaining! The flight was only a little over an hour. Once again, I quickly took a minute to freshen up before we landed. I wanted to not look like I’ve just spent all day running from one flight to another. Especially since I’ve never met Robert before.

Yet again, as soon as the doors to the airplane opened, I bolted out of them and quickly made my way towards baggage. Robert would be there already and I didn’t want to keep him waiting.

Emma had sent me a picture of Robert so I knew what he looked like. That was a great idea. As I came around the bend to Baggage Claim number seven I quickly looked around there he was.

Robert was very tall with sandy blonde hair. He must have seen my picture too because as our eyes connected, he held his hand up and waved with a big smile. I returned the wave and the smile as I approached him.

“Hi Robert!” I cheerfully said.

“Vivie, hi!”, he said opening his arms to give me a hug, “Nice to finally meet you.”

“Nice to meet you too, Robert.” I said.

“Baggage is starting to come down now, let’s stand over there so I can grab it as it comes down the belt.” He said as he started to walk to where the baggage dropped onto the belt from the back.

“Have you been waiting long?” I asked.

“No, not too long. We’re just going to take a taxi to the venue.” Robert told me.

“I told Jared I could have done this myself..” I said shaking no my head with a little laugh.

“Well, he cares about ya.” He said shyly which made me wonder what Jared told him about me.

In total, we only had to wait about ten minutes for my luggage which was nice. It gave me time to chit chat. Providing traffic wasn’t bad, Robert said I would make it to the venue in plenty of time for the show. I was happy I though ahead then.

Knowing I probably wouldn’t have time to change before I saw Jared, I dressed in black jeans and a cute tee that I could throw a blazer on top of. For all the travel, I wore my favorite All-Stars and packed my heels in the outer pocket of my bag so I could change them quickly. I wanted to look nice when I saw him for the first time in all these weeks.

Robert laughed as he watched my dig in my bag and to change my shoes.

“What are you doing?”

“Changing my shoes! Don’t judge.” I laughed back.

Robert just shook his head. “You women..”

Robert was very sweet and so easy to get along with. I was so glad he was the one Jared sent for me. Our conversations were light and relaxed. He was so easy and comfortable to be around. He definitely put my nerves to ease and kept my mind occupied.

“I have to ask, are you family? You look like you could be brothers.” I asked as we rode in the taxi.

“Not brothers, cousins.”

“I figured, you look like a mix of both Jared and Shannon.” I said as he laughed. “So, what do you?”

Robert went on to tell me that he’s a photographer and does short films. Right now though, he’s working on the tour as a cameraman, not just visiting like I initially thought. Showing me some of his work, it was clear he was talented but knowing how hard it is to break into any part of show business, it was nice that Jared was giving him work experience.

My nervousness pretty much subsided and by the time we pulled up to the venue, I was ready to jump out of the car and find my Sir. I was just so excited to see Jared that I didn’t even care about the luggage. All of my feelings towards him were rushing to the surface and I just felt like I was going to burst.

The taxi pulled to a stop and I jumped out. As I walked to the back of the car to grab my things, Emma popped her head out the back door. When she saw me, she stepped out.

“Hey Vivie!” She said, giving me a hug, “You made it! Jared is going to be happy. He’s been driving me nuts all day.” She rolled her eyes as she spoke about Jared and I laughed. He’s definitely got a way about him that I’m sure could drive anyone mad.

“Jared?! Nah…” I giggled. Over the course of countless emails, her and I developed a friendship which was nice.

“Come on, they’re still in the meet and greet. Robert will take care of your bags.” Emma said as we quickly walked to the doors.

“Thank you, Robert! Nice to meet you!!” I shouted waving to him.

“Nice to meet you too, Vivie!” He shouted back as he continued to pull my bags out of the trunk. “See ya later..”

“He doesn’t know you’re here yet. I got the text from Robert just after the meet and greet started.” Emma said handing me my all access pass.

My stomach was full of butterflies again. They only got worse with each step closer to the door but no amount of nerves were going to hold me back now.

“We’ll sneak in the back here.” She said as she quietly opened the door.

Jared was standing as Tomo and Shannon stood on either side of him against a table. Where we came in from was behind them so Jared didn’t see me right away. As we walked around towards the back, I watched Shannon tap Jared on the leg. As Jared turned to look at Shannon, he saw me and did a double take, stopping mid sentence when his eyes caught mine.

My breath caught in the throat and I smiled, biting my lip. I WANTED to run to him, to jump in his arms and kiss his face but of course, I refrained. Instead, I gave him a little wave as we continued to make our way to the back. Jared smiled back, continuing with his answer without skipping another beat. Not knowing any better, his audience probably thought he stopped to gather his thoughts which was good. The last thing I wanted was to draw attention to myself.

The meet and greet ended not to long after I arrived. I was just able to catch the last few questions. As everyone stood up, the guys were caught talking to everyone.

Emma leaned over, whispering in my ear, “Let’s make our way back while everyone is moving around. They’ll be lining up for pictures after this so the guys have about ten minute and I’m sure Jared is going to want a few minutes alone with you.”

I smiled and nodded whispering, “Okay, I’ll follow your lead.”

Jared watched my every move as I made my way to the doors. As soon as I was through them, Emma told me to wait. Her and I just stood there waiting and chatting. Apparently it had been quite a busy day. I heard Jared say they’d see everyone for pictures and cheering followed as Jared, Shannon and Tomo stepped from the room and into the hallway.

Shannon and Tomo walked out first, both said ‘hello’ and giving me hugs then continued down the hallway to their own dressing rooms for a bit of quiet before the next part of the night. Jared was the last one out. I was standing against the wall waiting, my heart beating so hard I thought it was going to beat out of my chest.

'Come on already!!!’ I thought to myself..

A minute later, Jared stepped over the threshold and into the hallway. With one quick step, he was finally in front of me. His wide smile matched mine as he pulled me into his arms for a tight embrace. My arms wrapped around his waist and I pressed my nose against his neck, inhaling his scent for the first time in what felt like forever.

“My god, I’ve missed you, baby girl.” He whispered against my ear.

Pulling back, Jared cupped my face in his hands as he brought his lips to mine, kissing me softly at first. I could feel his heart beating just as hard as mine through the thin fabric of his skirt. Jared licked my lip and I parted them so he could slip his soft tongue gently into my mouth. Savoring his taste, I completely forgot where we were. Everything just melted away and it was just him and I in this moment.

“Get a room..” Shannon shouted from down the hallway and that brought us both back to our senses.

Breaking apart, we both laughed as Jared turned around to give Shannon the finger. Everyone else had disappeared.

“Come on…” Jared whispered against my lips, kissing me one more time. Wrapping his arm around my shoulder and pulling me into him, we walked down the hall to his dressing room. “I only have about ten minutes…”

Gaara Hiden - Preview Chapter 2

Note: Okay, stuff is happening now. This took a while because there were maybe three sentences I couldn’t for the life of me understand, but most of that’s fixed [Conversational speech can be tricky, okay] . I’m also thinking of buying the book and continuing this. Sorry if parts seem odd, some of it’s weird and that’s why I took longer. I’ll probably fix those issues tomorrow.

Looking beyond Pokémon Go: Other issues in accessibility and game design (Part 2)

Part one can be found here. It covers some background on the response to Pokémon Go in disability communities and my personal experiences with gaming with a disability.

In the previous post, I claimed that the modern videogame industry would, as a whole, “fail Accessibility 101.” So, I should probably back up that assertion, right?

As I have started to navigate and explore the videogame landscape for the first time in over five years (and as a disabled person for the first time), what I have found has been primarily frustrating and discouraging. It would seem that the industry has taken very little note to the existence of disabilities. (Note: I am going to talk primarily about physical disabilities and sensory processing issues, as that is where I have personal experience. I recognize that there are other groups of disabled players who face significantly different challenges. I will let those people speak for themselves.)

Some primary issues (which shouldn’t be that hard to fix!):
1. Unnecessarily complex control schemes. If a game is about self-paced exploration in a beautiful 3-D world, it doesn’t need a control scheme that uses two pointing devices and 15 buttons. If a game is about living through a story and experiencing the consequences of your decisions, you really should be able to play it with the just a mouse. And, for goodness sake, if you are a developer working on a game that uses new eye tracking technologies, do not make me use the eye tracker, use the mouse, and use the keyboard all simultaneously! In action games, complex control schemes are probably often justified, but we don’t need them in every single game. If nothing significant would be lost by simplifying the control scheme in a game, then it really should be as simple as possible (or at least allow a control option requiring minimal inputs); simple design is often the most effective anyway (for all players!).

Simpler control schemes are easier for disabled people to use directly, and they are also easier to adapt to use with assistive technology tools. For example, in a game that requires only, say, six buttons (e.g. up, down, left, right, action one, action two), it is fairly easy for me to create eye controlled buttons or use a large low-force switches to play the game. But if I need two simultaneous pointing devices plus several buttons? Not going to happen.

2. Software that prevents interaction with assistive technology. This can vary from software that implements its own mouse and keyboard drivers and hence doesn’t accept emulated input (I’m looking at you DirectX!) to anti-cheating systems that intentionally try to detect and block any input that doesn’t come from a physical mouse or keyboard. This is the same basic problem as webpages that aren’t formatted to work with screen readers and computer applications that don’t play nice with on-screen keyboards. It uses technology to exclude specific groups of users, and it’s not okay. (I have less personal experience with this, but a similar issue arises when consoles are deliberately designed to make it difficult to interface non-standard controllers. This is usually done because the console manufacturer wants to be the sole distributor of controllers for the system, but that manufacturer usually fails to design any options for physically-disabled players, and the design of the console makes it difficult for third parties to design and market alternative disability-friendly controllers.)

3. Lack of documentation on control schemes. When I go to look up a game on Steam (a major digital distributor of PC games), the information page tells me what languages are supported, what the system requirements are to run the game, whether I can use the game on other operating systems or using Steam’s web streaming service, and even how many of my friends have the game. You know what it doesn’t tell me? What input/controls are required to play the game. Can it be played with just the mouse? Do I need four keyboard buttons, eight keyboard buttons, 25 keyboard buttons? Does it use technologies that prevent software-generated inputs? As a person who relies on assistive technology to play games, this is crucial information which determines whether or not I have any hope of making the game work for me. In my opinion, that is basic information which should be included (at least at a simple level) along with system requirements and operating system support. Often, I can’t find this information anywhere online. Not in Steam, not on the developer’s website, not on the fan wiki. I have often resorted to emailing the developer to ask for this information (which does have the added benefit of making the developer aware that disabled people are looking critically at their games), but I shouldn’t have to do that in order to get such basic information.

4. Lack of a pause button/inability to save the game during a play session. As someone with chronic pain, I have to take breaks. If I play for too long, even with my assistive technology, I will make myself feel very sick. Sometimes I can only play for 20 or 30 minutes at a time. If I can’t pause and save my game when I need to take a break, I cannot play that game. (Admittedly, this one is not that common. But a pause feature is such an easy addition that it should never happen.)

5. Lack of control configuration options. It’s very simple; in any game where the core engagement is not through action-based time-sensitive gameplay, simplified control options should be available. At the very least, a one-handed control scheme should be an option. Additionally, supporting key/button remapping is trivially easy (from a computer science perspective) and should be included in all games (action based or otherwise).

6. Lack of options for audio and video output configuration. By this, I mean that I should be able to adjust the volume of voices independently of music independently of sound effects. I should be able to turn off features like screen shake or effects like haze or smoke that covers the whole screen (when it’s being used to create atmosphere rather than conceal information). These sorts of options are very easy to implement from a computer science perspective, and they are crucially important to both people with sensory processing difficulties and people with sensory disabilities. (For example, a hard of hearing person might want to turn up the volume of voices while turning down the music and sound effects in order to make out the voices more clearly. Whereas someone with sensory processing issues might just choose to turn down the sound effects because she finds them uncomfortably loud.)

I’m sure there are hundreds of issues which I’m leaving out. I have also deliberately chosen not to talk about the harder-to-address issues surrounding physical disabilities and action-based gameplay. (It’s an important issue, but it’s also much harder to solve, and, quite frankly, I don’t have any good ideas at this point.) I have also totally failed to touch on issues of representation of disability (or lack thereof) in video games. Simply because that is a different issue that belongs in a different post.

I hope this post has been able to serve as a small introduction to disability related issues in modern video games. The videogame industry has a long way to go if we will ever reach a world where we can all play together.

Five Nights at Freddy's - Sequel Speculation

As per usual, this is a speculation / theory post about an unreleased game. Mostly consisting of personal opinion and theorizing of content. I claim nothing to be true.

Oh boy, where do I begin..

With the major success of Five Nights at Freddy’s, it was pretty clear that a sequel of sorts would be planned out. Now that a winning formula for an intense paranoiac experience was nearly perfected, it was only a matter of time before it was made even better.

Enter the image above. A grand reopening was announced for 2015.

The first teaser image, featured above, was released on, the official site of 5NAF. Depicting Freddy Fazbear, but it was clear that a change had happened. For one thing, Freddy looks in more disrepair than he used to be. His arms look more torn open, and his hat is apparently removable. The design of him is different, with a more squareish head and much more prominent endoskeleton teeth. All in all, Freddy seems to be a bit worse for wear.

And then this happened.

Now, first off, I don’t think this is a Bonnie ‘redesign’, so much as an entirely new face made from the parts of an old piece of junk. Whatever the story of 5NAF2 is, it seems to be on the subject of refurbishing the old restaurant for one reason or another. 'Something borrowed’ seems to suggest that old parts and such from Bonnie was taken away, whether he was broken for good or not I can’t say. 'Something new’ clearly depicts a fresh face with a higher grade of material used. Eyes are wider, facial features were touched up, it’s an entirely new ball game with this new animatronic. Now, whether or not this is intended to be a 'new’ Bonnie, or an entirely new character altogether, is a bit too early to tell. My personal thought on it, is that whoever is running the show now, is giving the old crew a fresh coat of paint. Redesigning and refurbishing something that was old and crude and making it new and clean.

Most of my conjecture was stifled a bit when the latest image arrived.

Pirate Cove appears to be a thing still. But just what is this supposed to mean, is hard to tell. Earlier, an email to the developer Scott Cawthon had asked about 'if Foxy was going to come back’ for the sequel, with Scott answering rather ambiguously, 'in more ways than one’. Now, immediately this answer raised a couple red flags in my mind.

For one, it’s a clear sign that the pirate is indeed coming back. Whether he will still serve the same roles as before or not, too early to tell. But this thought process was hammered on with the introduction of the animatronic on the right.

“In more ways than one.”

This, despite being a bit more feminine looking, looks to be another Foxy. If it’s Foxy suffering the same fate as Bonnie above, who knows. But the phrase 'more ways than one’, along with Foxy having two mechanics ( look at him often / don’t look at him too much ), I believe we may have two psycho fox bots gunning for our doors now. This new animatronic may either be Foxy’s crewmate, or just plain 'mate’, which will be great news for the NSFW artists out there I’m sure. Two hooked villains will certainly have people scrambling for those cameras, that’s for certain.

Chica seems to be the only one we’ve yet seen, if she’s going to make it at all. Everything is too early to really know for sure, but it’s still fun to think about. My main worry is the story itself, since I’ve been beside myself before just thinking of the possibilities.

Here’s to the future.

It's Time for a Major Update
After months of attempted contact and discussion, Atlus ended talks with us about the Persona 4 Musical.  We received an email from their business development team that stated that they refused to authorize the continuation of this project and that they would like to pursue the idea of a musical version of Persona 4 with actual professionals.

So that’s that, then.
We cannot express how much we have appreciated your kindness and active support of this project.  It has been such an impossible joy to share our songs, words, and voices with people who understood our vision and cared about the source material as much as we did. That all being said, the show will go on.  It is, however, a slightly different show, and it is going a rather different direction.

Over the past several weeks, we have been working to purge our songs of all copyrighted material - character names, canon lines and official songs - so that we might return our work to where it belongs. Some songs have not survived this transition.  We apologize to everyone who was unable to download Small Town Blues, King’s Game, Put the Drunk to Bed, Gas Station Confrontation and Prove to Me before they were removed from the internet.  They will, unfortunately, not be returning. There are also some songs that required transformation.  Lines in the Sand, Partners, Here at the End, Maybe That’s the Point and any song that included an allusion to Corridor have been subject to edits and minor music changes during this transition. The rest will be returning as they are.

Also, since we no longer have a reason to tread softly, we have further news!

In addition to returning the demo tracks to their rightful place on the internet, we will be starting a Kickstarter in the next several weeks to help fund a fully produced CD of these songs.  We would greatly appreciate your support! We also are planning to put on a concert of these songs in Atlanta some time in the next year.  While it is not the full show we were hoping to give you, it will be a chance to see these songs performed on stage by wonderful, talented people.   The concert will be called Stand By: Songs From the Show That Almost Was.
Finally - and announcing this brings me great sadness, because it is truly the end of an era - we are going to start transitioning this blog and the rest of our social media sites away from anything that suggests affiliation with Persona 4 and Atlus.  We will be changing the name of this blog to ryan-and-leigh after our composing group Ryan and Leigh Composing (based on Jake “Ryan” Smith and Gina “Leigh” Smith, for those who are interested). With this change comes new content.  Midnight Channel was not our only project, and while in the past we have tried to keep this blog fairly sterile and focused on Persona 4 exclusively, we are now going to open it up to our other song projects.  We will be posting original songs, pieces from our other shows and other fandom songs here starting in the near future.  We are so excited about getting the chance to share our full body of work with you. We’re sorry that we weren’t able to make Midnight Channel: the Musical a reality.  We’re sorry that our efforts failed.  We tried, but that doesn’t really matter in the end.

But here’s looking forward.  Please stick with us - there’s exciting stuff coming next. So, to summarize, we are:

-Purging the content of its connection to Atlus’s properties and re-uploading the songs in the near future. -Starting a Kickstarter to raise funds for a fully produced CD. -Planning a concert. -Changing the name of this blog to ryan-and-leigh -Uploading songs in new content areas. -Sorry about the past but excited for the future

Thank you.  All of you.

-Gina and Jake

Haha so a cool thing is Valve pissed themselves and re-uploaded Hatred to Steam. Which is a cool game about white male violence fantasies. Apparently Gabe Newell himself sent an email to the developers personally apologising for it being removed?

Basically it’s a trash game for trash babies who listen to too much metal and forge pretencious narratives about the rest of humanity being shit for whatever reason, and decide - as emotionally stunted, morally vapid white dudes are wont to do - that the solution is to just kill some people. Because apparently they don’t have enough outlets for their internalised violence. Something about making sweeping moral judgements about society despite sitting in the fucking lap of privilege inspires these fuckboys to think that mass indiscriminate murder is a Cool and Fun thing to emulate.

Basically if you see anyone you know talking about how Hatred is a good game I’d advise staying the fuck away from them
