Sending a big “FU” to the corporate side of the fashion industry.

As an increasingly successful fashion blogger, I have been targeted by several brands, large & small, one of which is quite a large corporation.
Why?
Because I am undermining a very important part of their money making system.

Today, the fashion industry is split in half.
You have Women’s fashion & Men’s fashion.
You will find designers here and there who produce androgynous designs but for the most part, the industry (brands & corporate companies) want designers who either design Men’s wear or Women’s wear, and follow a very gendered structure. Everything from the tailoring to the materials has to be specific to the binary boy/girl gender system.
This is why you can’t find feminine style’s of clothing tailored for the average males body type in any department store, thus creating a “mens” & “women’s” division.

Every time I modify the clothing I buy in department stores to fit my body type and then model it for people to see, not only am I inspiring people to step out of the box with their fashion choices, but I am merging two markets into one.
Why is this bad for corporations?
MONEY
More markets equal more advertising and marketing opportunities which ultimately leads to more sales and more profit.

When I successfully inspire people to be less mindful about if they look like a girl or a boy, ultimately I am inspiring them to go against the gendered market system that brands and clothing companies make so much money off of.

I have received several hateful emails, discouraging my efforts as a fashion blogger. I was even asked by a large corporate clothing company to STOP buying their clothing and modifying it to fit my body type. They stated that by doing so, and sharing it with my audience that I was creating the illusion that gender did not exist, and that I am leading a bad example for society. …

A GENDERED SOCIETY CREATES A HUGE PROBLEM.
IT DIVIDES PEOPLE.

IT SEPERATES.
IT CONTROLS.
IT DISOLVES ANY & ALL ORIGINALITY.

FUCK YOU, to any clothing brand, company & corporation who’s got a problem with who I am, what I believe in & how I express myself.

What a moment! Sitting at #GizzelleJames in Atlanta presenting the prototypes for the first @genderflux line! 15 pieces to be created so we can launch the Kickstarter to have this line launched. Love working with talented individuals that are also good friends.

Much love from @michaeldoi the designer of the line and #Genderflux model, @houseofalexzander the creator of the brand and myself @barrybrandon creative director of the line. Xoxo

Mainstream.
TV, the radio, the web, etc…. Mainstream media is probably the number one influence on our society. Everything from celebrity gossip to political debates, all of these things come funneling through to our eyes and ears with a simple connection like your phone, television, computer, car and even inside your grocery stores and markets in the form of magazines and advertisements.
What is my point?
Well growing up I hated following trends and keeping up with politics. Quite literally I used to try way to hard to dress, act and express myself in ways that were entirely different from any mainstream influence. However as I have grown into my adult form, my opinion has drastically changed.

Not that conformity is a good thing, but sometimes you have to conform just a little, to really make a statement and leave an impression on society.

My goal is to continuously spread awareness through our society about the things that matter the most to me. As a young adult I am beginning to understand the responsibility I have in changing how our society views gender identity, sexuality and individuality. These three things mean so much to me because I have had a very unusual journey finding self acceptance and confidence in who I am and how I feel.
By openly identifying as gender fluid I have already crossed that fine line of what is socially acceptable in society. However, I have begun crafting my image in a way that I think will make a lot of people stop and at least question the idea of gender variance. Now I am on my way to further tailoring my articulation to be more mindful of the immense amount of diversity in the world. I am doing this because I feel that I can be a good example of what the presence of a gender variant individual might be like for mainstream media.
Let me explain.
My goal as an artist is to plant an idea into peoples minds, water that idea with educated perspective and then nurture its growth with inspiration. The idea that sexuality, gender identity and individuality are not features of the human soul is in my opinion disgusting! When you have people all around the world, who would rather take their own life over living out a lie for societies approval, then their is something seriously wrong with how our society views individualism.
I think that people are ready for a mainstream, trendy example of a non-binary individual. I am going to be that example because I feel personally responsible for being the change that I want to see in the world.

Change

Modifications, or
perhaps a changeover, but
what about the adaptation, of
the interchangeable individuals?

Part of really knowing who you are, is knowing when its time for change.

A revision of your life perhaps?
The foundation of success, is
entirely dependant on, the
determination, to

That awkward moment when…

I’m at work with a client and a customers child points and says loud and clear “are you a girl or a boy?”

My mom asked me to go to church.
And I did,
in a beautiful dress.
Sunday best of course.

I’m at the doctor and the nurse asks me what my gender is and I laugh out loud and say “you tell me!”

I am mistaken for a lesbian.

The person I’m on the phone with goes “yes ma'am, umm… I mean. Umm.”

I go to H&M and use the guys dressing room to try on girls clothes.

I’m hit on by a guy, in the guys H&M dressing room, while trying on girls clothes.

I’m slightly drunk at Applebee’s Restaurant and find myself lost in between the men’s & women’s bathroom.

I’m at the shoe store and I ask the clerk for a size 11 and she looks at me and says “10 is the highest size we carry, umm, but our shoes run big if you want to try some on!”

My mom buys me a birthday card and has to cross out the words “son” & “man” and writes out to the side “child” & “human being.”

My best friend and I run into the gas station frantically yelling at each other, “WHERE ARE MY BOOBS! OH MY GOD I’VE LOST MY BOOBS!” “I DON’T KNOW ELLIOTT! WHER DID YOU SET THEM DOWN!!” And then the clerk runs over to us and says “can I help you find something?” At the same time we go, “Where are his boobies!!!”

Just a few of my awkward moments as an openly gender variant individual. Xoxo.

I wanted to let everyone in on the difference you are helping us make, and say thank you, from myself and my team. I think its important to be transparent with all of my followers who are helping to support this project.

Thank you so much for ordering a shirt, it means so much to me and my team, we are really trying to change things and make a difference in the lives of the gender variant community. We believe that there is nothing wrong with being who you are. But we find it very wrong, that when you walk into a shopping mall, look around and realize that EVERYTHING & EVERYONE around you is brainwashed by a socially constructed gender binary. We want to change that, open peoples minds and make life better for the gender variant community. Its all going to take time, a whole lot of hard work and most importantly outside support. The Gender flux merchandise is a way for us to reach out to you with a tool, such as a t-shirt or wristband that you can wear in and around your own local community. People WILL ask questions, they will want to know what all the symbols and terminology means, they will be curious! That’s your chance to talk about gender variance, open their minds and even lead them back to House of Alexzander for visual references. In the end your contributions to the project immediately ties you into our support system, without you we couldn’t be making this happen. Thank you, from the bottom of our hearts & we hope to see you soon at one of our upcoming events or parties! We will be dropping in on Thursday, January 22nd to #SFYL for a meet & greet! Plus live performances by Elliott Alexzander! GenderFlux Merchandise will also be available! Check out the event invitation and let us know if you’re going!

With love,

Time Warp.

The past 3 years worth of fashion post from my baby love.
The stylish. The crazy. The hot. The sexy. The cute. The loveable.
The one and only Elliott Alexzander.

Side note - this is Elliott’s boyfriend. Elliott is asleep on the couch and I was going through all of her fashion photos, remembering our photo shoots together and just thinking about how much I appreciate having her in my life. She wouldn’t post some of these because they’re older pics or she don’t like em’ but I think she looks beautifully handsome in every single one. Anyways, I hope at least one or two people reblog this so she can’t delete it, tehe. :D

We are absolutely blown away!!!

Myself and my team are ecstatic!
In a weeks time we have sold over 300 GENDER FLUX campaign shirts, giving us the capability to launch part 2 of the three part project.

Here is the break down.

Part 1 - The launch begins with publishing the GENDER FLUX tee shirt. This launch is to raise all necessary means to complete & launch part 2 of the campaign.

Part 2 - Set to begging in January 2015, GenderFlux.com will again have the original campaign tee shirt available for purchase. However the website will also introduce 4 new tee shirt designs & a few accessory designs that will be available for purchase. This phase of the campaign will also include advertising, sponsored models, special guest publications & Videography. Part two of the GENDER FLUX campaign is to raise the maximum amount of awareness as possible for the campaign, and produce the necessary means to complete and launch the third & final phase in the GENDER FLUX campaign.

Part 3 - The pt.3 launch date is yet to be determined. At this point, the GENDER FLUX campaign will now be transitioned to Kickstarter.com. A goal will be set in place, accompanied by a completion date. Advertising, guest publications, Videography & social media will continue to be utilized to maximum capacity in order to reach our goal in time. If the goal is not obtained, it will be back to the drawing boards! However, we have complete faith in this creative endeavor and believe that with hard work, sacrifice & the love and support of you we can make this dream come true.

Thank you so much to everyone who has launched us into part 2 of the GENDER FLUX campaign. We appreciate you purchasing a shirt and look forward to introducing you to the 4 new tee shirt designs in January! Also, remember to take a photo of you in your new tee shirt and submit it to us here on the blog! We are looking forward to seeing you in your new gear! Equal thanks to those of you who have reblogged, shared & talked about this campaign so far! Please keep up the excitement! Seriously, thank you. NONE of this would be possible without all of you!

Be looking forward to new outfits by Elliott Alexzander this weekend. Also, if you would still like to purchase a GENDER FLUX tee shirt, you have about 3 hours left. At midnight tonight, they will become unavailable until January. http://www.genderflux.com/

GENDER FLUX

The Gender Variant Symbol, screen printed onto a high quality, white tri-blend American Apparel t-shirt $25

The term “gender variant” is deliberately broad to include anyone who identifies with a gender aside from the gender assigned to them at birth. The symbol is used by both gender variant individuals & their allies to bring forth awareness.

Follow the link to learn more about the GENDER FLUX project.

30 days of broken gender norms. This is a cute little challenge I have created for myself but think it would be wonderful to share and invite others to join in! Use the hashtag #breakthebinary so I can follow along to see how you are breaking gender norms!

DAY #1 - Nails & Scruff
In my opinion, a nice set of dramatic nails always compliments my scruff nicely.
