Season 1 Bashir: This is BRILLIANT, gonna practice RUGGED FRONTIER MEDICINE and have ADVENTURES and do THRILLING HEROICS and PULL MORE TAIL THAN JAMES T. KIRK

Season 4 Bashir: Have been officially dumped by everything in a skirt on the station. Adventures are scary. Major Kira is scary. Captain Sisko’s shiny bald head is scary. Also am fairly certain I want to fuck a lizard.

Star Trek: Deep Space 9 | Past Prologue | Garak’s Introduction [4\4]

Bashir is really good-looking, so as a character choice I thought, “What the hell? Why not go for it?” There is a close-up of Garak where it looks like he could eat him alive. And I’m sure that’s why I got the job. - Andrew J. Robinson (x)

I realized belatedly that this looks like a Progression of Fucks Given by Elim Garak, from ”ZERO FUCKS GIVEN to “FAR TOO MANY FUCKS FOR THIS LIZARD’S COMFORT” to “SISKO WOULD YOU STOP PUNCHING ME FOR LIKE ONE MINUTE”

…every time I look at it, the watermelon outfit gets a little worse.

An interesting thing about Garak’s speech that I’ve observed-

Andrew Robinson has said that he played Garak’s speech pattern as though he had very recently learned to speak Federation Standard (maybe about a month before the show starts, while the Federation was on Terok Nor making the withdrawal negotiations).

Now, for the most part, Andrew uses close to his own natural American accent. But sometimes, Garak pronounces words like Julian does, as in with an English accent.

Since Julian is the person Garak talks with the most, and he very recently started learning Fed Standard when they meet, Garak is picking up some of Julian’s speech patterns.

I find this a subtle and interesting connection between them.

(While on the topic, Julian and Garak pronounce each other’s names differently from how everyone else seems to).

“Garak, I gave you this to read, not…annotate!”

“I improved it.”

“Claudius is not the protagonist of the play.”

“Well, Hamlet certainly isn’t.”

“He’s the quintessential tragic hero!”

“There’s nothing heroic about terminal indecisiveness, Doctor. His death wasn’t a tragedy, it was a mercy killing.”

—-

Mostly an excuse for colour experimention, but also because, having seen other artists’ renditions of tailed Cardassians, I am infatuated with the idea of Garak with a tail.

also I was looking at images of Garak’s tailoring tools from the show and they are such utterly ridiculous pieces of plastic  (“okay so just sort of run it over the fabric like you’re vacuuming it” “what is it?” “it’s a…uh…sonic seam ripper. Yeah. It rips seams. Sonically.”)

“…so by that logic the whole second canto is obviously a veiled critique of Meroc’s appropriation of the Hebitian epic style for State propaganda purposes, and - uh - Garak?”

“Yes?”

“Are you playing footsie?”

“What a charming term! I’m not familiar with it. But please do continue, Doctor - I’m eager to see how this fascinatingly wrongheaded analysis of yours will play out.”

“Hang on - I’m winning, aren’t I? I’m winning the argument, and you’re trying to distract me.”

“Whatever do you mean.”

Can I just say something? I love the fact that there’s all these Star Trek blogs that have specific content, and then you have ds9 specific fandom that just randomly have lizard vines with zero explanation but we all know why.
