Nothing sucks more than perfectly applying your eyeshadow only for it not to blend properly.

What are the best drugstore eye primers?

In the past drugstore brands have really lacked on the eye primer front, but now there are many options available and whilst many brands just can’t get their formula’s right, some hit the nail on the head…

ELF Essential Eyelid Primer

If you haven’t heard the raves over the Urban Decay Primer Potion (which some have dubbed the best product in the world) where have you been? This eyelid primer is super popular and in my honest opinion the ELF Essential Eyelid Primer works just as good (if not better) It keeps shadow on all day  makes eyeshadow apply smoother and appear more pigmented.

NYX High Definition Eyeshadow Base

This is another lovely eye primer, I personally still prefer the ELF version, but this one is great at making your shadows appear more vibrant and works well with shadows that have a lot of fallout.

The Milani and Wet N Wild primers are also great quality for the price. Also, I wouldn’t recommend using concealer as an eye primer.

If you have super oily eyelids these won’t work miracles on you, but they will keep your shadow on just a little longer.

Lip Balm as an Eyeshadow Primer?

I’ve heard just about every crazy beauty tip you can think of by now from using milk of magnesia and deodorant as face primers, hairspray as a makeup setting spray and cornstarch as a setting powder. The latest? Using lip balm as an eye primer.

Lip balm is a fantastic thing for hydrating your lips, making them soft, healthy and happy, it’s even great for grooming eyebrows and highlighting the face, but as an eye primer? Not so much.

Does concealer work as an eye primer?

Using concealer as an eyelid primer seems relatively harmless, it really won’t cause you any harm, but will it actually work?

Concealers are great at covering dark circles, blemishes, acne, scars, broken capillaries and redness, heck they even do a fabulous job at covering visible veins and discolouration on the eyelids, but that doesn’t mean they make great eye primers … Concealers (especially those designed for under the eyes) often contain oils to help them blend over the skin easily and look natural so if you want your eye makeup to last they won’t help oily eyelids the slightest. Eye primers are designed to mattify the eyelids and “zap” any oils so that eye makeup doesn’t crease, smudge, run or fade and make colours appear brighter. Using a product that is creamy and oil based to prep the eyelids simply won’t work; and using a concealer as an eye primer can actually cause your eyeshadow to crease, not stay put.

Those who don’t have super oily eyelids and use a dry concealer may find this works but If you want your eye makeup to last and your eye shadow to appear more pigmented there are plenty of great budget friendly options, none of which include concealer. Try: ELF Essential Eyelid Primer.

Hi there! I was wondering if you could recommend any eyelid primers that also even out your skin tone? I have dark, oily eyelids and when I try to apply shadows they aren't very visible. :( I've tried the elf eyelid primer but it's too sheer, and I've tried my concealer but it creases too much. Any suggestions?

Try primers like

  • NYX HD Eyeshadow Primer
  • Milani Eye Primer in Nude
  • Urban Decay Primer Potion in Eden
  • Benefit Stay Don’t Stray Eye Primer

These primers are all nude/flesh toned tinted so they will make the eye lid and even color so your shadows so more true to color and look more vibrant! :)
