Candles: Elements & Planets

Candles are good divination aids, spells, or any other magick work.

Planetary Candles

These can be used for rituals, ceremonies, or create planetary vibrations needed for power in your spell work. These can also be used when working with planetary spirits.

What spell work is best suitable for what planets?

  • Sun: Legal Matters, Healing, Protection.
  • Moon: Sleep, Prophetic Dreams, Fertility, Peace, Healing.
  • Mercury: Mental Powers, Divination, Psychic Powers, Wisdom.
  • Venus: Love, Friendship, Fidelity, Beauty, Youth.
  • Mars: Courage, Strength, Lust, Sexual Potency, Exorcism, Hex Breaking, Protection.
  • Jupiter: Money, Prosperity, Legal Matters, Luck.
  • Saturn: Visions, Longevity, Exorcisms, Endings.

What colours are associated with the planets?
Note** these are my personal associations.

  • Sun: Yellow/Orange/Gold.
  • Moon: White/Silver/Pale Blues.
  • Mercury: Purple, Grey, (or mixed colours).
  • Venus: Pink/Pale Yellows or Greens.

Note** You can dress the candles with planetary oils, or draw/carve planetary symbols onto them. You may also choose to add herbs, glitter, or crystals on top but be wary of not burning them.

Elemental Candles

What spell work is best for what element?

  • Earth: Money, Prosperity, Fertility, Healing, Employment.

  • Fire: Lust, Courage, Strength, Exorcism, Protection, Health.
  • Water: Sleep, Meditation, Purification, Prophetic Dreams, Healing, Love, Friendships, Fidelity.

Elemental Spell Ideas

Most of the time, I try to do spellwork with the intent aligned with a specific element in order to use the energy of that element. Here are some ideas for choosing a type of spell based on its elemental alignment.

Water

  • charge herbs, stones, etc and throw into a moving body of water, such as a river, stream, or ocean. You can use a pond or lake, but I think the moving water has more effect.
  • Take a ritual bath with oils or herb blends suited for your purpose. The bath itself is cleansing, and soaking in the herbs, oils, and water while focusing on intent/chanting can be super powerful.
  • Carve runes or sigils into soap or bath bomb and use in bath. As the runes/sigil disappear, the spell is released.
  • Draw sigils into dirt with a stick/finger, let rain wash it away or pour water over it to release (this is also an earth spell)
  • Make teas/potions with edible(be careful!) herbs
  • Do a blessing or chant over wine or other beverages for yourself or to share any time (kitchen witchery is fantastic!)
  • Wash items with blessed and charged water to cleanse and purify. This can be ritual tools or just anything that you feel needs to be cleansed of negative energy.

Earth

  • Carve names, words, runes or sigils, into fruit and bury in a pot of dirt or in the ground. Good for things that you want to have manifest slowly.
  • For permanent effect, bury something that will not decompose, such as a stone or a glass bottle filled with items, herbs, images, etc.
  • Carve spells into wood or burn symbols into wood.
  • Recharge stones by burying them in dirt, sand, or salt
  • Collect dirt or sand from locations with good energy to use in rituals
  • Cooking! Specifically baking. (this can also be a fire spell, depending on what your’re making)

Air

  • Make incense
  • Place charms and other charged items in high locations or tie them onto tree branches
  • Astral or dream work
  • Create wind chimes or charms to hang in windows or outside near your home
  • Use incense to cleanse items and banish negative energy from your home

Fire

  • Write sigils, names, words, runes, etc on paper and burn. This can be used for manifestation or banishing
  • Use bonfires to raise energy
  • Fire gazing or fire scrying
  • Candle magick
  • Sex magick
  • Burn carves wax figures for banishing
  • Write on bay leaves and burn or place on an incense coal
  • Again, cooking!

These are just my associations and methods that I find useful. There are of course countless other options!

Witch Tip - Book of Shadows / Grimoire Part 2

(REMEMBER: you are writing your book for yourself and yourself alone. If it’s not relevant to you, if it’s not of interest to you, if you don’t want to include it, don’t!! You’re not writing an all encompassing instruction manual to publish for all witches, this is for your own personal beliefs and use)

*********

IDEAS OF WHAT TO INCLUDE

- date you decided to become a witch
(You’ll be happy you did once you’ve been practicing a while- you can see when you started, how long you’ve been practicing and how far you’ve come)

- personal beliefs
(Morals, deities, religion, what kind of magic is real and possible)

- what you’re aiming to achieve through your craft
(Could be spiritual, mental, or physical goals)

- correspondences
(E.g. Moon phases, elements, colours, herbs, crystals, candles, animals…. Etc)

- spells

- rituals

- energy exercises
(E.g. Grounding, cleansing)

- meditations

- experiences and observations

- divination techniques

- tarot / rune meanings

- tarot / rune spreads

- divination experiences
(Note down answers to the questions you asked)

- your dreams and their possible meanings

- prayers

- poems you like

- quotes that are important to you

- self help and care
(Especially useful for witches who use spells to help their mental health- in mine I have a space next to my spells for depression and anxiety where I’ve listed all the things I know I can do to help myself when I’ve slipped down into that state again)

- natural remedies

- positive affirmations

- sigils

- symbols and meanings

- a list of your favourite craft related books / websites or ones that you want to read

Please feel free to reblog and add more suggestions! 💕

I was having difficulty finding where to start with my Book of Shadows.  A lot of the resources I found online are for Wiccan BOS, which I don’t follow, so a lot of the information was superfluous to me.  I was just going to save this privately, but figure perhaps there was someone else that was struggling with where to start as well. Ill make more posts as I expand on this, but in the mean time here are some ideas for chapters in your BOS.
