Although this painting is about the 3rd of May, it is still emblematic of the holiday being celebrated today here in Madrid “Dos de Mayo” (2nd of May). Today is a holiday that celebrates the Spanish uprising here in Madrid again the occupation of the city by French troops. Citizens took to the streets to defend their capital practically unarmed. This revolt trigger brutal French oppression and eventually led to the Peninsula War.
