The combat system introduced in Batman: Arkham Asylum is built around encounters expanding outward from basic attacks and counters. This is meant to A) allow players to complete many (but not all) combat encounters with only a modicum of skill, B) give a multitude of opportunities to throw in additional pieces (batarangs, dive kicks, etc.) without overwhelming the whole system, and C) deliver the feeling of almost effortless, absolute power and skill that Batman possesses to the player during play.
