“Guys like us, that work on ranches, are the loneliest guys in the world. They got no family. They don’t belong no place. They come to a ranch an’ work up a stake and then they go inta town and blow their stake, and the first thing you know they’re poundin’ their tail on some other ranch. They ain’t got nothing to look ahead to. With us it ain’t like that. We got a future. We got somebody to talk to that gives a damn about us. We don’t have to sit in no bar room blowin’ our jack jus’ because we got no place else to go. If them other guys gets in jail they can rot for all anybody gives a damn. But not us. Because I got you to look after me, and you got me to look after you, and that’s why.”

A/N: sorry this took so long to post lovely, i hope it’s okay
“Oh, sorry,” you mumbled, your chest slamming into Austin, a close friend of yours, sending you stumbling back on your feet for a moment, your palm placed gently on the soft fabric of the shirt that hung loosely from his shoulders. Smiling gently, you blinked, your vision flicking over his features as he grinned, “I didn’t see you there."
“Dad, I can’t run this fast!” Lorenzo called as we raced down the hospital hall, me pushing the twins in their stroller. It’s been about a month that we’ve been in the hospital. Today Kayla was being released, and was also the first day the boys would be seeing their baby sister.
“Come on, it’s a big surprise!” I called back, making a sharp turn which made the twins squeal with delight. We finally made it to Kayla’s room and I unstrapped the twins before bringing them in quietly. When we walked in Kayla was sitting upright in her bed holding a pink bundle in her arms smiling at it.
“Is that Belle?” Lorenzo whispered. I nodded and walked him and the twins over to the side of the bed so they could get a better look.
“Belle!” Aidan exclaimed, clapping his small tan hands together. I laid him on the side of the bed and Kayla brought down her arm so he could see the baby better.
“Das baby Belle” he stated, nodding his head.
“Yea, that’s your baby sister” Kayla responded with a smile. I switched Aidan with Ean and he just sat and stared at her.
“Say hi, Ean” I whispered to him. He was the quiet one of the two, so he just waved his hand at the baby. I brought him down and let Lorenzo climb up.
“Mom, she’s so tiny” he said.
“Yea, that’s because she was born early” she responded.
“You were right when you said she was a peanut” he said, making Kayla laugh.
“Yea she is. But she’s a tough peanut” Kayla responded.
“It’s because she’s a Carlile” we heard a voice say. We turned and saw the doctor walk in with a clipboard.
“What’s the news doc?” I asked.
“Well, these are just Kayla’s discharge papers. And unfortunately Belle can’t leave for another couple weeks until we’re completely sure she’s alright. But the way things are looking, she’ll be home in about a week. It’s truly amazing, she’s the fastest recovering pre-me we’ve ever had” he said with a smile. He handed me the clipboard and walked out.
“Well, my ladies will be joining the Carlile boys in our new home very soon” I said as I sat down and started filling out the papers. The boys wouldn’t stop gawking over Belle, constantly touching her tiny hands and giggling when she would grab their fingers. She sneezed once and they thought it was the most adorable thing. When I finished with the papers I walked to the desk and handed them in. I came back to the room and another nurse was putting Belle back in her crib to bring her back to the pediatric department.
“Alright, Belle, Mommy and Daddy will be back tomorrow to see you. We love you so much baby” I said as I bent down and gently kissed her forehead. Kayla did the same and the boys said their goodbyes as the nurse took her out of the room. I looked at Kayla and saw her tearing up.
“Shh, baby don’t cry” I said into her hair as I held her.
“I just can’t believe this is all happening so fast. I get to go home but I’m going to miss seeing her whenever I want” she said with a couple sniffles.
“You still can, we’ll come everyday until she’s released. Then she’s ours” I said, trying to cheer her up. She smiled at me and nodded. I helped her put on her jacket and gave her her bag before buckling the twins into their stroller. We said our goodbyes to the nurses and doctors and made our way out to the rental car. We drove back to the hotel and made our way to our room.
“Alright guys, behave. Mom just came back, so let’s give her a day of peace, please?” I begged as the boys immediately took off their shoes and jumped on their bed. I brought in Kayla’s bag and set it on the table before helping her settle in.
“Come on boys, lets get showered” I called out. They complied, one by one walking into the bathroom.
“You know, I can help” Kayla said. I shook my head and leaned down and kissed the tip of her nose.
“No. You rest. I’ve got this” I objected. She nodded and I got the boys’ pajamas. Stephanie and Tino flew back to California yesterday to help get things organized for Kayla, so I’ve been taking care of the boys alone. When I finished, I tucked them all into the second full sized bed and me and Kayla both kissed them goodnight.
“Your turn” I said, grabbing her hand and leading her to the bathroom. I started a bath for her and grabbed one of my shirts and boxers for her while she got in. When I came back she was settled into the warm water with a folded towel behind her neck and some bubbles.
“You get comfy fast” I joked. She smiled and nodded.
“Austin, can we talk?” she asked. I nodded and sat down on the floor next to the bathtub.
“I don’t want to move back out here” she said. I stared at her confused for a moment before speaking.
“Why? This is your home"
"It’s not. It hasn’t been my home for the past six years. I left this place to have a better life with my son-"
"And we can still have a better life here. It’s a good area, the school ratings are amazing-”
“Austin. I’m sorry that you paid so much money for the house. But, it just doesn’t feel right. With all the shit that’s gone down in these past few months, I just want to be home. In California. Where Tino and Steph are. Where your dad is. Where the band is. That’s our family, that’s where we need to be” she said, resting her arms on the edge of the tub. I stared into her deep brown eyes for a while.
“Are you sure that’s what you want?” I asked.
“I’m positive. Maybe we can find a house out there, but it just doesn’t feel right staying here. I mean, there’s nothing left for me here” she responded. I placed my hand on the back of her neck and brought her into a kiss.
“I was hoping you’d say that because I really am not feeling these cold ass winters here” I joked, earning a small slap on the chest.
“Seriously though. I love you so much Austin. I am so glad I met you that day. And yea, even though our relationship wasn’t as perfect as I thought, you are the perfect father, and I couldn’t ask for a better husband” she said, bringing me in for another kiss.
“And I couldn’t ask for a better wife” I replied.
“Well, are you gonna bathe me or what?” she asked, making us both laugh.
“Oh I can do more than that” I replied, removing my clothes before jumping into the tub with her.
