Eckhart saw Hell too. He said: The only thing that burns in Hell is the part of you that won’t let go of life, your memories, your attachments. They burn them all away. But they’re not punishing you, he said. They’re freeing your soul. So the way he sees it, if you’re frightened of dying and… and you’re holding on, you’ll see devils tearing your life away. But if you’ve made your peace, then the devils are really angels, freeing you from the earth. It’s just a matter of how you look at it, that’s all. So don’t worry, okay? Okay?

Jacob’s Ladder

Polemonium micranthum “Annual Jacob’s-ladder” Polemoniaceae

These abundant, weedy Jacob’s Ladders are often found growing among other equally small, white-flowered annuals like Stellaria, Arabidopsis, Capsella, and Cardamine. Unlike many members of those other weedy genera, Polemonium micranthum is a native and not quite as abundant. I certainly would have passed right over it, had I not been on my hands and knees searching for a timid jumping spider. It’s a new species to me!

The Binding (and before the burning of ladders)

The fever enters,
           Come cup of water,
           Iced at 36,000,
In defiance, I flee from thee.

The hallucinations begin,
           When I remember,
           Your smile, and the moments,
           We’d blanket euphoria.

                     Perhaps.

And to taste delirium,
           I sack the phone,
Rabid and running away, so to,
I escape, all that’d birth happy.

And the fever eventually subsides, when I –
           I burn the ladders,
           Succumb, the binding,
           If only to kiss the contagion;

                     For we’ll never burn again.
                     Perhaps you will.
                     And perhaps I will.
                     But we’ll never burn again.

Notice Mary Magdalene with her three children at the bottom of this picture, flanked by two women of the Jerusalem Church, representing the sacred feminine in the forefront of Jachin and Boaz, with dozens of masonic symbols, including the beehive, square and compass, spring of acacia, plumb, level, scythe, Jacob’s ladder, lamb, rough and smooth ashlars, point within a circle, anchor, cable-tow, ark of the covenant, lost key, past master symbol, noah’s ark, trowel, vitruvian base, venus (pentalpha/pentagram), mercury/alchemy star (star of David/Jewish star),  The Hierophant Tau Cross, mosaic pavement, three steps (degrees), the Sun, and the Divine Shekhinah in the center of the Holy of Holies, the inner chamber of Solomon’s Temple; this represents the Venus/Mercury conjunction with the Sun.  There are more symbols here, but these are just off the top of my head and what I can recognize. One of my favorite paintings, for various reasons.

On this day in music history: March 14, 1987 - “Jacob’s Ladder” by Huey Lewis And The News hits #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 for 1 week. Written by Bruce Hornsby and John Hornsby, it is the second chart topping single for the pop/rock band from Corte Madera, CA. The Hornsby brothers write the song in the Summer of 1985 while working on material for Bruce Hornsby & The Range’s first album. With its title coming from the staircase to heaven envisioned by Jacob, the patriarch of the Israelites in The Bible (in the book of Genesis Chapter 28, verses 10-19), the song’s narrative is about people blindly following the word of evangelists, rather than finding the strength within themselves to take the right path in life. When Lewis is looking for material for the follow up to “Sports”, Hornsby offers Lewis two songs, “Every Little Kiss” or “Jacob’s Ladder”. Lewis chooses the latter, while Hornsby’s band record the other song for their debut album “The Way It Is”. Remixed for single release, “Jacob’s Ladder” is the third single from Huey Lewis And The News’ fourth album “Fore!” on January 5, 1987. Entering the Hot 100 at #40 on January 17, 1987, it climbs to the top of the chart eight weeks later. While The News’ studio version of the song is on the charts, their label Chrysalis Records issues a promotional only 12" single of the track recorded live in concert at the Portland Memorial Coliseum in Portland, OR on December 18, 1986. The live version quickly becomes a fan favorite, receiving widespread airplay on album rock stations. The music video for the song featuring a live performance from the same tour is also filmed. Bruce Hornsby And The Range record their own version of “Jacob’s Ladder” on their second album “Scenes From The Southside” in 1988.
