Philip: “You are even more beautiful when you’re angry.”
Marianne: “Don’t be absurd.”
Philip: “I’m not.”
Philip: “You should see yourself, with that flash of fire in your eyes. And when you press your lips together like that, a dimple appears in your left cheek, right next to your mouth. I find it… maddening.”

You know- spending so much time with him…and the way you look at him.”
“How do I look at him?” I asked as dread filled me.
She waved a hand in the air. “As if he…created happiness.

“You stole my heart the night we met, when you sang that ridiculous song and dared me not to laugh. and every moment I have spent with you since then, you have stolen more and more of me until when you’re not with me…“ He drew in a breath. "When you are not with me, I am left with nothing but longing for you.” ― Julianne Donaldson, Edenbrooke

I just finished reading Edenbrooke and OH MY GOSH I was so hooked, I couldn’t put it down. I definitely recommend it to everyone, it was such a sweet, witty romance with several elements of surprise. It was one of those books that I wanted to read forever and ever and now that I’m over I’m really sad to have to say goodbye to the characters…I don’t know what to do with myself!

“Where is your compassion when I need it the most? Open your eyes, love, and see what is right before you: that I am not merely a friend, but a man deeply, desperately, in love with you.” ~ Philip Wyndham

The cover of this book says, “A Proper Romance,” and that is exactly what it is.  This was a delightful, light-hearted, relaxing book without copious amounts of sexual tension narration or mistresses or any other of the annoying parts of modern “romantic” writing.  Instead, it is simply a happy story.  There is the usual lovers’ misunderstanding, but nothing so unreasonable that you want to bang your head against the wall; instead, just enough to keep the story moving.

However, I will say that there is one part, towards the end, where SPOILER SPOILER SPOILER she gets kidnapped, and that does seem incredibly abrupt to me.  She’s just all Hey I’m  happy hanging out in the orchard and then this guy who has always seemed perfectly nice pops out with a villainous laugh and snatches her up.  Really?  But that’s the catalyst the author chooses to use to bring her leading characters together, so I guess you just have to go with it.

All in all, I enjoyed this book, and give it a high 3/5.

Edenbrooke: A Proper Romance- Julianne Donaldson

Synopsis (via Goodreads): Marianne Daventry will do anything to escape the boredom of Bath and the amorous attentions of an unwanted suitor. So when an invitation arrives from her twin sister, Cecily, to join her at a sprawling country estate, she jumps at the chance. Thinking she’ll be able to relax and enjoy her beloved English countryside while her sister snags the handsome heir of Edenbrooke, Marianne finds that even the best laid plans can go awry. From a terrifying run-in with a highwayman to a seemingly harmless flirtation, Marianne finds herself embroiled in an unexpected adventure filled with enough romance and intrigue to keep her mind racing.

Review (4 stars)- Now, this Regency romance counts as a guilty pleasure for me. It’s a bit of fluff, but enjoyable fluff it is! I found the amusing banter between Marianne and Philip entertaining. There’s nothing particularly unique about this story, but I fell for the characters. I think I read it twice. It’s a lighthearted, clean romance.
