Artists to Watch: 2016
Alessia Cara is a nineteen-year-old singer-songwriter from Canada who took the music world by storm with the release of a couple of EP’s and her debut album in 2015. Her voice is fresh and crisp and her lyrics relatable.
Jcole is a very well established rapper but 2016 is the year he’s going to blow up. He’s doing a couple of collaborations with Kendrick Lamar and has garnered national attention with real and emotional lyrics and catchy beats, all of which he produces himself.
G has taken the rap game by a storm with the release of his sophomore album, “When It’s Dark Out”. His second album is brutally honest, raw, and incredibly vulnerable and adds another layer of depth to G’s ever growing image. His meanful and detailed songwriting paired with his compelling image and fresh beats will take him far in 2016.
Garrett Borns, a West Michigan prodigy is taking the music world by storm. He only just released his first major album, Dopamine that has already gartered attention from the likes of Conan and Late Night with Seth Meyers. His stage presence is entrancing and his almost feminine voice is strong and well practiced. He’s an incredible singer songwriter who’s going to garner national attention this year.
They may be the band you know as the band who sings “sweater weather”, but they are so much more than their most popular song. With the release of their sophomore album, late in 2015, their song complexity was unveiled and 2016 will be the year they’re brought into the spotlight.
Halsey took the music world by surprise this year. Built off of fans based in the 5 Seconds of Summer and One Direction camps, Halsey had a huge following even before her debut album Badlands dropped. Her beats are catchy and lyrics relatable and hot off tour with The Weeknd, she’s on to do incredible things this year.
The band is already well established in in Denmark and is slowly bringing their music to the US. Their hit “7 Years” is lyrically beautiful and their front man, Lukas Graham brings power and soul with confident vocals. Their album is set to be released in the US this month and is about to garner national attention.
The first time I saw Rixton live was when they opened for Ed Sheeran in May of 2015. Opening acts rarely catch my attention but these guys were incredibly at stealing the attention of the crowd and keeping it. Their album does not give their energetic and immense stage presence credit and I couldn’t stop smiling during their set. Their demanding to be heard and 2016 will be their year.
Chance The Rapper
Chance the rapper is an up and coming rapper who has released all of his music for free including his new collaboration with Donnie trumpet and the social experiment, Surf. He just recently made history as the first person every to preform unsigned on SNL and he absolutely killed it.
