EVERYONE NEEDS TO WATCH THIS

anonymous asked:

Maybe one day I want a snake that stays relatively small and who I won't have to feed rats to. Do you know of any of these babies?

if you want to specifically avoid rats and larger feed animals, you can go for cornsnakes, which get long and noodly and can feed off of mice, or hognoses, which are relatively short and pudgy and feed on frogs and toads and can be goaded into eating mice. all snakes are carnivorous and usually desire live food, but, depending on their personality (and to avoid dangerous situations with live feed), you can instead give pet snakes pre killed mice, but this requires a good amount of prep and snakes can get picky. i’ve known individuals who only ate large white mice instead of smaller white rats.

because snakes eat so infrequently, their meals tend to be one good sized portion all at once. if you want a pet reptile that doesn’t eat live mammals, go for a lizard, which eat more frequently and (depending on species) can be fed a variety of insects and vegetables.

like with any pet, please do thorough research on your pet’s living requirements and feeding habits!!

If Hognose...

…like to eat toads and anoles… why do people feed them rodents? Why not have feeder reptiles and amphibians? Is it just easier to force breed rodents in… well truthfully horrid conditions, making them more cost effective? Or is it just convinent to have all snakes eat the same basic feeders? Mix of both?

I have this weird thought that herp keepers are adverse to the idea of feeding herps to herps… but I think thats just a silly thought. Xp

I am really curious though! And confused… since some sources say they can be a pain to switch foods, I’d imagine it’d be easier to feed what they like. But I really don’t know.

Thanks in advanced!
