Plants of the Day
Monday 13 October 2014

Spent a great day walking the trails of the Midewin National Tallgrass Prairie, Illinois, USA, where they are trying to restore 20,000 acres of various prairie habitats. The trunks of the Populus deltoides (Eastern Cottonwood) looked wonderful in the sunshine and there were still some flowers among all the beautiful seed heads, mostly purple Aster novae-angliae (New England aster) and white Aster ericoides (heath aster). The seed for the project was locally sourced and produced in quantity from nursery seed beds and harvested by volunteers. A great project but they still have a few acres to go but already the prairie is ‘singing’ with crickets, birds, butterflies, amphibians and reptiles.
