The Perks of Being A Wallflower is easily my favorite book. Stories about growing up in a school environment are more popular now than ever, but none of these books have captured the accuracy of a high school setting as The Perks of Being A Wallflower. One of the reasons for this is the timelessness of the book; it doesn’t matter what age you live in, or what you’ve been through. If you’ve gone through the experience of being a teen, you can definitely relate to the characters in this book.
Describing the journey of Charlie, a sensitive and quiet 15-year-old boy, he writes letters to an unnamed person about his life at high school and two horrible experiences he had to go through when he was younger — the suicide of his best friend and the death of his aunt.
When Charlie finally settles into high school, he meets Sam and Patrick. Even though they aren’t the best influences you could have, they care for Charlie, helping him get the social life he always longed for in his heart. Through different stages of high school, Charlie slowly learns how to love life, family, friends, and most of all, himself.
Charlie’s constant deteriorating mental health plays a big part in this book. Even though Chboksy never truly mentioned the technical terms of mental illnesses within the book, through his actions, we can see Charlie shows symptoms of depression, PTSD, anxiety… He lives in a world where sadness seems like the norm, and he brings his gloom to his only outlet — writing. There is a point in the book where Charlie reads a poem he wrote for his friend Patrick. The poem contained hints of suicide, talking about how Charlie’s family broke apart and how his friendships ended. However, Charlie didn’t even notice the darkness of the poem until he finished reading it.
Saying all this, I would recommend the book to everyone, especially people who are struggling in high school. After you read this book is that you will not be able to stop thinking about it. The way Chboksy paints the world is so painfully true. You will see so much of yourself in the characters. All of the characters — male and female, have been so brilliantly illustrated with a vast diversity. All of the characters have their own, unique personality that helps them shine brightly within the story.
When I read The Perks of Being A Wallflower, I was Charlie; I could feel the emotions he was feeling, the pain, the darkness, and at the end, the glory and the joy. I felt like Charlie when he danced in the Rocky Horror Show, and I felt like Charlie when he stood up at the car, spreading out his hands to Fleetwood Mac’s “Landslide,” and in that moment, I felt infinite.
Hi Cassie! (: I really loved all your books, especially TID because it was just so emotional. I recently finished CoHF and I’m really looking forward to TDA and finding out more about the fey and Emma Carstairs. I have a feeling the books will have a very different tone (in a good way!) from your other books in the Shadowhunter Chronicles because your previous heroines, Clary and Tessa knew nothing about the Shadow World while Emma is obviously a fearsome, trained shadowhunter already. Is Emma’s character close to that of Isabelle, queen of bad-assery? Also, will we please find out more about the Faerie Courts? Out of all the downworlders, the fey fascinated me the mist because of their cunning and their magic… Lastly, will we prettyyy pleaseee see more of JEM CARSTAIRS in TDA? I really loved his personality, with his gentleness and his dry humour. He is easily one of my favorite characters ever! — gloriousburritos
Hi! I’m really glad you’re looking forward to TDA and Emma.
I think it’s natural to want to map new characters onto old characters, like “Is Emma like Izzy?” because it gives a point of reference. We know Emma only as a kid at the moment, and while that does give some insight, it’s still hard to imagine her as the protagonist of her series: the most important character, the one who everything revolves around.
It’s definitely true that while both Clary and Tessa had to have the Shadow world explained to them, The Dark Artifices focuses on characters who are already a part of it. Emma knows she’s a Shadowhunter from the beginning; the question of the book is much less “What is my identity?” and more “Since I self-identify as a dedicated Shadowhunter, how do I know when a law is a bad law?”
Before Infernal Devices came out people constantly asked if Jem (I’ll use him as an example because you seem to like him!) was like Jace, or Alec, or Simon. But while he has some things in common with all of them, he isn't like any of them. He’s just … like Jem.
Emma is just like Emma. We’ve always seen Izzy as someone who revels in her own natural Shadowhunting skills, while Emma trains constantly, and brutally, and agonizes a lot over whether lack of inborn specialness can be made up for with effort. (She wants to be like Jace, but that’s not easy when you don’t have extra angel blood.) She’s dated before, unlike Clary or Tessa, but not with Izzy’s devil-may-care-I-don’t-believe-in-love attitude. And a huge part of what shapes Emma and Julian is that they have the basically sole charge of all these kids: any sibling who’s ever brought up a younger sibling with little to no help will hopefully relate. Jules, and Emma less but as well, are thrust into these parental roles very early: raising these kids, managing them, getting them to eat, singing them to sleep, teaching them to ride bicycles, all the details of child-rearing land on them and that makes one a very different sort of person.
In the end, though, I think you only can get to know a character by reading about them; no amount of telling people what they’re like will work (just as, as a writer, you get to know characters by writing about them.) I’ve been super happy about the positive response to Emma and Jules so far, and I hope people will not be disappointed in their story!
(We do indeed see much more about the faeries in TDA because of the connection to Mark and Helen. As for seeing Jem, etc, I don’t want to make concrete statements about how much he’ll be in it when the series is as yet unfinished.)
Cassandra Jean drew a gorgeous panel comic of Emma and Jules’ parabatai ceremony, meanwhile. I’m trying to decide whether to post it now or later. :)
Okay, so a WEEEK ago I got an anon who asked me for my favorite Stereks. I totally forgot. I tried putting them in the ask reply box, but the formatting was all off. So this is for you, nonnie. Sorry its so late. And that the formatting is still weird. This isn’t all of my favorites, I stopped about halfway through my bookmarks, and there are also a few at the end that don’t have summaries or comments. Sorry!!! My top 5 on this list are bolded.
Derek plans to spend the rest of his life holed up in the woods after Laura dies. Then he meets a stubborn young fox, and the stubborn young fox meets an urn of Deaton’s magic powder, and his plans change.
I’m a total sucker for full shift Derek. And by a bit I mean MAJOR. Add in Stiles who is born as a fox and gets mixed up with Deaton’s magic, slowly turning him into a human, and you make a really lovely fic.
When Kate Argent hires Stiles to date Derek and get paid for it, Stiles obviously agrees and sets out to win his heart. Except Stiles wasn’t expecting Derek to actually have layers underneath his tough exterior, and he certainly wasn’t expecting to develop pesky little feelings for him. And everything gets a little messed up along the way.
Lightly based on the movie.
10 Things I hate About You is like… My FAVORITE movie so finding out there were fusions for it made me so happy I could cry.
Ever since he was eight years old, Stiles had been running. Fate decided it was time to stop.
I’m not quite sure when it happened but one day I woke up and decided fox Stiles was my favorite Stiles, other than merman, and this fic is definitely one of the absolute BEST out there. Stiles is 19ish I think in this one? And at 8 something traumatic happened and he shifted into a fox and he’s been in fox form ever since, until Derek stumbles across him in the woods one day.
Super cute, kiiiinda slow burn but not really ‘cause it’s only 30k.
Laura is a crusader without a cause, Stiles dances like the whole world’s betrayed him and Derek’s having trouble getting both feet outside his door.
I do not know how to properly convey how much I loved this goddamn fic. It was absolutely flawless. It was fucked up and hopeful and dark and miserable and just completely ten shades of fucked up. Stiles… You just kinda want to hug him and smack him at the same time. And Derek, you just want to hug Derek. I don’t know why I decided to read this fic. I’m not big on ballet/dancing aus. But one afternoon I was bored and decided to read it and I won’t ever regret it. This ending is easily one of my top 10 favorite endings, out of any fic, movie, book, anything.
Beacon Hills is the kind of small town where everybody knows everybody, and what everybody knows is that surly diner owner Derek Hale and free spirited single dad Stiles Stilinski have been in love with each other for years. If only they knew it too.
I just love fusions, and this is a Gilmore Girls one so naturally I love it. Derek as Luke is something I didn’t know I needed until I read it.
“Have you heard of this Alpha?” Stiles asks, shuffling up his pallet so Scott has room to sit. Scott does with a grateful little twist of his mouth. Stefan forces him into the Stilinski ceremonial armor when they travel and Stiles can see that it’s heavy and doesn’t sit well on Scott. He can’t shift encased in metal and Stefan knows it.
“I know of him, mostly stories that seem a little fantastical. Shifters exaggerate just like common people. They like their war stories.”
“Tell me of him. Tell me a war story.”
I love this one so much, I read it five times in two days and I’ve probably reread it at least fifteen times since. I wish it were longer though.
“I’m sorry, I believe there’s something wrong with my hearing,” Stiles said. “Because I could have sworn you just told me you set up a betrothal agreement with the Hales. A betrothal agreement involving me. Me.”
Scott smiled his easygoing smile and nodded, which told Stiles no, he hadn’t misheard a damn thing.
After seven years of lengthy negotiations, the treaty between the Hales and the Argents has fallen apart and the two countries fell into war.
Months later, there’s an uneasy truce, thanks to the intervention of King Scott McCall, but it won’t last. In a desperate attempt to maintain the peace, the Hales sign a treaty with the McCalls to marry Prince Derek to Prince Stiles Stilinski, King Scott’s brother.
In the history of the world, there have been many better ideas.
This was one of the first ones I ever read, and there’s a reason it’s on so many rec lists. I am soooo long overdue for a reread.
Other people might have found the name of the place off-putting. Stiles didn’t. He was actually relieved, when Scott handed him a business card that said “HALEHOUNDS” across the top, because clearly, if anybody could recognize and understand the evil that lurked within his dog’s fluffy precious body, it was these people.
This was really the one that sparked my Sterek with pets obsession. I want more dog fics.
He can’t blame me for the fact that I live in a building full of people united in the singular effort to ogle Hot Fireman as often as humanly possible.“
Laura laughs, loud and echoing in the empty restaurant.
"Hot firemen can make a girl do crazy things,” she agrees, nodding towards her brother’s name on the menu. “Derek won’t let me date anyone from his company, but that doesn’t mean I can’t appreciate the eye candy.”
“Send them my way,” Stiles suggests, finally loading up a forkful of pie. “Apparently I’m incompetent enough that I need to be babysat at all times, because it would be cheaper than dispatching a truck every time I try to use a kitchen appliance.”
I really feel like the only things I need to say to sell this fic is… Derek is a fireman that bakes. That’s really all you need to know.
They’ve known about the other pack for quite some time now. They know the pack is young and small, formed together more by accident and necessity than anything else. But, they haven’t done anything about them because they’ve been fairly quiet, kept to themselves, and haven’t caused any trouble.
That is until the Hales start hearing rumors about the McCall pack acquiring a very young and inexperienced but powerful witch.
So Alpha Hale sends her eldest son, Derek, for all intents and purposes, to spy on the McCall pack and their so-called witch, to see what the truth of the situation is.
THIS ONE IS SO CUTE THOUGH full wolf Derek falling in love with emissionary Stiles and STILES BRINGING HIM FOOD UGH YES PLEASE MORE.
Derek is having a bad day and breaks down on a stranger’s doorstep.
Stiles is the stranger. He really doesn’t mind.
Also, there’s a cat.
This is my second favorite out of all of them on this list, easily. My go to for a bad day, I’ve read it probably a thousand times. Also, Stiles in the second part is just unf. Read if you need a pick me up. (Yes I meant to bold this one all he way)
Life hasn’t been kind to blacksmith Derek Hale. Only a month after he moved to the royal capitol of Beacon and started working as a way to escape his past, the royal family is brutally murdered by Deucalion, one of the king’s former generals, and his men. While the oncoming political instability hardly has any impact on him, two weeks later, Derek’s quiet and solitary life is nonetheless disturbed by the sudden appearance of three young men who were thought to be dead. One of whom changes his life in ways he could never have imagined; someone who, for the first time in years, makes him experience things he thought he’d never feel again. But then again, life has never been kind to Derek… Will this time be different?
Medieval and regency aus are my THING yo. And this one did NOT disappoint. It was a little fast paced for me, at least as far as how their relationship progressed, but not so much that you’re left going WTF. Plus. Prince Stiles. Warnings: Graphic depictions of violence, underage
When Derek is killed by a rival alpha, the pack will stop at nothing to get him back. Even if that means blackmailing the most dangerous hunter duo this side of hell. Whatever. That whole devil thing was probably totally exaggerated, anyway.
As a rule, I fucking HATE crossovers. I don’t know why. I never think they mesh well. I don’t like the two worlds colliding. EVER. That being said, this fic is just… Phenomenal. It features Laura, I LOVE Laura, And has a happy ending. It’s perfection. I rec it to everyone, even my friends who aren’t in the sterek fandom, haha!
Derek can’t believe he’s actually doing this: taking a selfie snap of the guy he’s been crushing on for weeks to prove to Danny that one, yes, he really does exist, and two, he really is that hot and thus he is totally justified in being too scared to make a move.
Or you know, even talk to the guy outside of the class they share.
In his defense, this isn’t just any guy. This THE guy. Hot Nerd. The utterly adorable but still somehow insanely sexy freshman in his twentieth century American Lit class who he’s been lusting over since the first day of the semester. If there were ever a time for him to be that person who tries to be subtle while taking snaps of other people, this is it.
Oh my god this author just. Ugh. Writes the HOTTEST fucking smut scenes. There is locker room sex and baseball player Derek.
Derek scrubs his hands across his face before crossing his arms over his chest and furrowing his eyebrows at the two idiots standing in front of him. Well, Scott is an idiot. Stiles is…luminescent, and all jerky movement, with big, golden brown eyes. And he always has a plan. Derek is fucked and, it turns out, unable to say no to him.
“Shit, Der.” Stiles shivers. “You promise when we get to the room—”
“I’m going to lock the door, undress you, and make up for every minute of the past six weeks.” Derek grins when Stiles’s pupils blow wide with lust. “And we’re in the chapel, so you know I’m not lying.”
“Forgive us, Father,” Stiles mutters, and grabs Derek’s hand. “For we are about to sin so hard.”
For the past four years Derek and Stiles have been roommates at St. Cecilia’s Catholic Boarding School. For the past two years, they have been secret lovers. Now, as senior year dawns, one boy begins to seriously consider coming out, while the other feels pressured by church and family to deny his identity.
There’s also some Romeo and Juliet, a lot of fluff, a heap of angst, and Jeff Davis as a priest, because… reasons.
In short, it’s the bare: the rock opera/Teen Wolf mashup that just wouldn’t get out of my head.
As someone who deals with internalized homophobia after being raised as a Catholic, this fic was fucking hard. It was so fucking hard. There wasn’t a single chapter that didn’t resonate with me. By about halfway through I was crying, like, ugly crying. It DOES have a happy ending though, and it really helped me deal with and confront some shit actually. Warnings: There are none listed, but attempted suicide, bullying, mentions of conversion therapy, I THINK there was a hate crime but it wasn’t physical, I think it was just mentions of past hate crimes, internalized homophobia, as well as derogatory language. Like I said, there’s nothing easy about this fic.
“You’re not putting that up your butt,” Scott told him flatly and Stiles couldn’t stop the pissed off whine he made, but his friend continued. “Stiles, you can’t put that up your butt, you know that. Your butt won’t be ready for anything to go in it until-”
“Okay, okay!” he said, flailing his hands to stop his friend’s lecture. “Message received, no butt stuff until I’m pounced on by some freaking animal in the forest and ravished to within an inch of my life. Got it. Thanks, Scotty, I mean heaven forbid I actually try to take control of my life and give myself a fighting chance or anything.”
“Not all alphas are animals,” Scott said quietly.
Maybe he was right, but Stiles wasn’t holding his breath.
I’m not going to lie, I think mating run is a weird trope. Like, there are some weird tropes, but that’s kind of at the top of the list for me. I just normally don’t like them. They have to be done WELL for me to like it, much like A/B/O fics. But this one was fantastic. Maybe I liked it so much because Derek and Stiles were both so against it? I don’t know. Maybe ‘cause there wasn’t a ton of public forest sex? Maybe ‘cause Erica and Boyd? I don’t know. But it was great.
Prince Stiles of Cor has always known, somewhere in the back of his mind, that he was never truly going to marry for love. Fighting it has only made it worse. Now, presented with a choice between two children of the Hale family of Ignis, Derek and Cora, he must make the decision to determine who will rule by his side. If only it were that simple.
“Tell me,” he says, taking a drink. “If your sister does accept me as her husband, would you be pleased for her fortune or yours?”
Derek sets down the pitcher and moves further into the room, removing his vest and setting it over a chair. “I don’t believe that’s a fair question. If she finds happiness in your kingdom, by your side, of course I’ll be pleased for her.”
“And relieved, I imagine.”
Derek turns, arms crossed over his chest. “Would you be?”
Real talk I really do think medieval and regency tropes are my favorite.
Stiles was stuck in a bank robbery in the middle of the day in the middle of Beacon Hills and he could have pocket-dialled Scott or Derek but his phone was on the kitchen bench, covered in lime and chili aioli.
I have a soft spot for possessive Derek… I don’t know why… I hate it when I’m with someone and they’re possessive, but I feel like it kinda works for Sterek sometimes? Plus I really love when people who aren’t Stiles and Derek pick up on the UST and general tension and they don’t, haha.
Where Stiles has his own college radio show, and the mysterious, faceless Derek is his number one fan.
Also there’s this really hot guy he keeps meeting in the library who totally hates his guts.
I have read this one SO MANY TIMES I just cannot even. I can’t make a single complaint about this fic because there isn’t any to make. (Except Derek is totally more of a Bucky than a Captain America.) Tattooed Derek is just UGH and mix that with tortured musician Derek and a texting relationship and piningpingpiningpining and this fic is just brilliant.
Derek’s frozen in front of him, eyes boring into Stiles’ like he can’t believe it’s really him.
“I thought you were in Russia?” Stiles asks because it looks like Derek is having trouble forming words. Derek’s been in Russia for five years. Stiles met him two weeks before he left. Stiles fell in love with him two weeks before he left.
“I- I am,” Derek stutters. “I’m only here for the night,” he adds apologetically.
I read this fic three times the same day. Three. Times. And cried each time. I don’t know why. It’s a Friends fusion and I’m not a huge Friends fan but I am a huge fucking fan of this fic.
AKA, the Grandma Stilinski fic. Derek Hale meets a Mabel Stilinski while living in New York. He learns that she has a grandson. There are miscommunications, scarves, stealth-matchmaking plans, and cookies. Many, many cookies.
Yes, a Christmas fic. Save it for Christmastime or read it now, but regardless it‘s a must read.
Stiles goes camping with his friends in New Mexico after graduation where they befriend a biker gang led by Derek: a guy whom Stiles can’t decide if he will be either relieved or devastated to never see again once their week is up.
This is the fic that made me love Zainclaw. i would’ve liked it more if it were a werewolf au, to be completely honest for the first couple of chapters I kept expecting it to be. It was so completely perfect though.
Across the loft, Cora claps her hands. “Okay, new rule. Any time Derek wants a date, one of us has to vet her first.”
Scott, who’s actually upside down on Derek’s couch, in apparent celebration of their defeat of the alpha pack—which somehow ended with Kali trying to give Derek her number, and he still doesn’t know how that happened, because he’s the worst alpha ever—says, “You know who’s got really good people instincts?”
This is some fluffy silliness I wrote in reaction to “The Girl Who Knew Too Much.” Anyone looking for a serious story should probably look elsewhere. However, if you want to know the kind of flaws Stiles discovers in Derek’s possible dates, this is the place for you.
Due to the destruction of House Hale and the debts incurred in their survival and search for justice, the King (blah blah, make believe world) arranges a marriage between Derek and Stiles, eliminating all debts the Hales may owe. Derek is very unhappy. Stiles is pretty shocked at who he’s being matched with, but he’s certainly not unhappy. It’s pretty clear from the start Derek doesn’t share that feeling.
Stiles passes the time by hunting with his falcon, Derek broods. Until…
Pretty much everything Stoney writes is worth reading. This is part of a 4 part unconnected series that’s all just perfect.
‘This one is kind of canon compliant… Which is normally not my cup of tea. But it’s super cute with oblivious Stiles where every single other person, including random supernatural beings, knowing what’s going on and he doesn’t. Warning: Underage.
It smells like smoke, that’s what wakes him up. It doesn’t smell like burning wood, which would really freak him out, it just smells disgusting like—
Stiles takes a very deep breath. “ISAAC, I AM GOING TO WRING YOUR FUCKING NECK IF YOU’RE SETTING DOG SHIT ON FIRE AGAIN!”
In which Stiles is the oldest sibling to a fucked up family and it’s his job to make sure they don’t end up dead, meth addicts, or in juvie. And then Derek crashes into his world and makes everything a little bit more interesting.
I’ve never actually seen Shameless, but it’s been on my list ever since I read this fic.
Where Stiles is a librarian who is in charge of the kids’ reading hour and such. And Derek is 6-year-old Scott’s adoptive dad. And Stiles has his own take on Stories and Scott loves wolves and Derek tries not to admit that he likes the way Stiles’s face looks in those glasses.
Or something like that.
It’s a single dad Derek and librarian Stiles fic, I don’t need to say anything else to sell this one.
Derek Hale has been cursed with a wolf-like face since birth, which he can only be cured of by marrying a fellow high-society blueblood. Derek has little hope of ever finding anyone he can stand, or who can stand his face, until he meets Stiles, and his carefully-maintained isolation is completely upset.
A Teen Wolf/Penelope AU
I have read almost every romantic comedy au out there in the Sterek fandom, and this is definitely one of my favorites. Stiles as a tortured artist/musician is something I need more of.
Scott is never bitten, so Stiles never meets Derek or learns about werewolves. He is, however, since a young age, captivated by a recurring dream of a beautiful, red-eyed wolf that he comes to hold dear to his heart. After college, he moves to Seattle and decides to get a tattoo to acknowledge his dream Wolf, finding a lot more than he expected at Triskele Tattoo.
In which Derek is a tattoo artist and a good alpha, Laura is alive, and Stiles and Derek share each other’s dreams.
This fic is everything to me. It’s my go to when I’ve had a bad day, when I’ve read a horrifying fic and need a guarenteed good one, I’ve had panic attacks and calmed down by reading this fic. There’s tattoos and knotting and alpha Derek and alive Laura and weed and it’s just amazing. It’s everything. My favorite Sterek fic that isn’t a part of a series, by far.
An AU in which Derek flees to his family’s vacation home on the coast in an attempt to leave behind Beacon Hills and all its ghosts. Stiles is a bold young merman who likes to feel the sun on his scales and isn’t about to give up his favorite place to sun bathe just because a brooding werewolf has moved into the long abandoned beach house. Mythical creatures abound and romance is in abundance.
“I have a theory that selflessness and bravery aren’t all that different.” This book is filled with extraordinary acts of bravery, just like an Arien. An Arien will do anything to help who they love, and despite the fact that they can get angry easily, they are also one of the most caring signs.
Taurus:The Running Dream by Wendelin Van Draanen
“I realize something. That wasn’t a finish line for me…This is my new starting line.” A Taurus refuses to ever give up, no matter what the situation is. The whole book is about never giving up and getting to the finish line, no matter what challenges try to prevent you.
Gemini:Eleanor & Park by Rainbow Rowell
“You act like there are two kinds of girls,’ she said. ‘The smart ones and the ones that boys like.” This book sugar-coats nothing, and the harsh reality is revealed. A Gemini will never lie to you about the reality of how they feel.
Cancer:A Corner of the Universe by Ann Martin
“For now, I just want things all safe and familiar. My life may not be perfect, but it is what I have known.” Cancer’s like the known, and usually fear the unknown. Cancer’s are homebodies and aren’t always open to new things.
Leo:Mary Poppins by P.L. Travers
“There was something strange and extraordinary about her – something that was frightening and at the same time most exciting.” A Leo is like the quote says of Mary Poppins, “extraoridinary” and “frightening” at the same time, but “exciting” nonetheless.
Virgo:Between Shades of Gray by Ruta Sepetys
“Sometimes there is such beauty in awkwardness. There’s love and emotion trying to express itself, but at the time, it just ends up being awkward.” Sometimes when a Virgo tries to express himself/herself, it gets swallowed up by the fact that a Virgo may not be able to express themselves as easily as others. (No, this is not 50 shades of grey, byE)
Libra:One Crazy Summer by Rita Williams-Garcia
“We all have our la-la-la song. The thing we do when the world isn’t singing a nice tune to us. We sing our own nice tune to drown out ugly.” A Libra likes to imagine to world as a good place, and when the world isn’t such a good place, they make it a good place all by themselves. They can’t always put a big mark on the world, but can definitely help themselves and others around them.
Scorpio: The Grimm Legacy by Polly Shulman
“The one who asks questions does not lose his way.” The Scorpio, who is always inquisitive and always asks questions. When they don’t understand, they make themselves understand. If they don’t know something, they figure it out by asking questions.
Sagittarius:After Ever After by Jordan Sonnenblick
“But nobody ever tells you in advance when you should concentrate on the good times-that’s why you’re supposed to do it every day.” Even with a challenge, a Sagittarian continues to persevere through until the end with their optimism guiding them the whole way.
Capricorn: 13 Reasons Why by Jay Asher
“Everything…affects everything” To a Capricorn, everything really does affect everything. Everything fits together, and they can make sense of it. This book is very logically put together and all of the events lead to other events.
Aquarius:The Fault in Our Stars by John Green
“The world is not a wish-granting factory.” Like an Aquarian’s real view on life, where they romanticize nothing. They are realists and know that not everything is given to them. Just like a Capricorn.
Pisces:The Perks of being a Wallflower by Stephen Chbosky
“So, this is my life. And I want you to know that I am both happy and sad and I’m still trying to figure out how that could be.” A Pisces’ view of their life.
Like Chance the Rapper, it’s been a while since I’ve done this but here we are ready for another review.
After his highly successful sophomore mixtape release (Acid Rap) back in 2013, he’s back with his third mixtape, Coloring Book.
Taking much of his influence from his religious beliefs & hometown, Chance laces much of his tape together this time around with gospel sounds & 90s influenced lyrics. Along with the production on this project, you also get a new sound mixed in with a lot of the more familiar instruments you’ve known to expect from the Chicago MC.
If you heard The Life of Pablo, some of the sounds on this mixtape will sound familiar to you. The difference however, is that Kanye couldn’t come across as sincere or pure as Chance, making it so much more enjoyable even for a person who is not religious like myself.
Gospel and a heavy influence from God guides his work to new grounds and just like his previous efforts, he brings with him a variety of features all doing their share of the work in elevating this project. Features on this album include Lil Wayne, 2 Chainz, Jay Electronica, Noname, and more.
As a lyricist, I don’t think Chance made huge strides in the complexity of his lyrics. He still comes in with flows we already recognize and adlibs that are now a signature of his work. But what he lacks in progression as a lyrical rapper, he makes up for in his songwriting abilities.
The choruses, bridges, etc. stand out so much for me and it really captivates just how positive & uplifting his music has become.
As mentioned before, the production is stellar from first to last track. Packed with a variety of brass instruments & percussions, sonically this album also delivers and remains consistent throughout the entire listen with most of the production handled by The Social Experiment.
To me, this is an album, or at the very least worthy of being known as one (although i get that mixtapes really give you an endless amount of freedom in terms of sampling).
Everything about the tape just shows how much talent Chano has and how much he’s progressed since his debut mixtape. Easily a 9/10 in my eyes (it’d be perfect but the first track has one of the worst choruses I’ve ever heard!!!) and will definitely be a year-end lists favorite regardless of who else is set to release this year.
Favorite Tracks: No Problem, Blessings, Mixtape, Juke Jam, All Night, Finish Line.
Grant Morrison and Frank Quitely are a pretty great team. If you’ve everreadanyofthesecomics, you know exactly what I’m talking about and you know you should pick up Multiversity: Pax Americana right away.
Continuing his metafictional journey through the DC universe in this Multiversity event, Grant Morrison brings us a critical examination of a critical examination. He takes Alan Moore’s Watchmen characters (who were based on newly acquired DC characters at the time) and puts his own spin on them to tell a thematically similar story with just as much darkness.
Just as in Watchmen, the conspiracy investigation kicks off with a high-profile murder that just doesn’t make sense. The President is killed by one of the world’s greatest heroes and nobody knows why. As our broken heroes slowly reveal the story through a complex series of time jumps, we’re treated to dark secrets and high concept ideas involving the fourth dimension, non-linear perceptions of time, and shadow politics using dangerous algorithms to change the future.
This is definitely a cerebral tale, but if that’s not your cup of tea, there are still tons to enjoy about this book. For one, this book brings back Ted Kord’s Blue Beetle and Vic Sage’s ‘The Question’. One of my favorite parts of this book is an exchange between these two characters. After The Question implies that the aging Blue Beetle is suffering from erectile dysfunction, the Beetle says, “And you’re so deep in the closet, you pay rent in Narnia.” Zing!
This could’ve easily been a silly looking book with way-too-lofty writing and a confusing plot, but Frank Quitely’s art is a really great fit for the kind of stern and severe voice that Grant Morrison uses in this story. There are high-intensity, high-energy captured in still frames. The sense of ever-present danger really drives the story forward and delivers some great moments with a rewarding reveal.

I’m about halfway through my travel journal/sketchbook so I wanna do a tribute post to it!
I’ve got a lot of stuff in it. Mostly it’s art from my life or some of my favorite things, but there’s other goodies in there too; like comic ideas hastily scribbled onto post it notes, the watercolors I did on our road trip to Sacramento (that all bled together when it fell into the ocean as I was trying to paint with water from the beach just a few weeks later) and, most recently, a collage of my feelings about moving back to Boise, made from the Boise Weekly newspapers I’ve been using to pack boxes for said trip.
Normally when I get sketchbooks or journals I spend so much time worrying what I’ll put in this or that one, but this thrown together memory scrap/sketch book is easily my favorite I’ve ever done.
“Geth, I’m so happy the show is moving to cable. It’s gonna be awesome. But I have one, kind of self-serving concern. Will the kinds of bands you book change? One of my favorite things about your show is discovering the DIY bands that play on your show. I can’t imagine a world in which you ever have a lame musical guest, but will you have to start picking bands with record deals and albums to promote? Or will great local and DIY bands still be able to submit as easily?”
