10: Why did you choose this pairing for this particular story? // SALverse

I was a blackice shipper from the moment I walked out of the cinema after watching the film.

And that doesn’t normally happen to me.

Like I had no intentions of seeing RotG (the advertising campaign was SHIT), and then saw some (non-shipping) gifs and images on Tumblr and decided to see it.

While I was watching it, I loved the dynamic between Jack and Pitch straight away. I remember thinking during the Antarctica scene ‘I wonder if there’s any fanfiction of this? I bet there’s not. I wonder if there is though? Like ten maybe? Is there even a fandom? Fucking hell Pia there’s probably no fandom at all it’s a fucking kid’s movie goddamn you idiot’ etc.

I walked out of the cinema and went straight to my phone and looked it up on AO3 and saw that there was a fandom (pretty small, at the time maybe only 60-100 fics?) but way way more than I’d thought, and that the pairing even had a name: blackice. I was so excited. I joined the fandom at the time where people were still coming up with names for the pairings, lol. For a long time, blackice covered everything, including Kozmotis/Jack pairings (which is why I still use it for that, I’m an old-timer).

I read all the fic with the pairing (I’ve never really shipped anyone else in the fandom) and realised I couldn’t quite find something I was looking for. Like there were fics with hurt/comfort, but they weren’t huge or long (at the time), or there were PWPs with really hot sex, but they lacked sprawling character growth (no fault of the PWPs, which were still super fucking hot, I just have weird reading habits).

It was a pretty short step to then writing the first chapter of From the Darkness We Rise and exploring the pairing the way I wanted to. They’re the only pairing for me, in RotG. :)

2: What scene did you first put down? // Game Theory

I actually think it may have been the sex scene from the first chapter. But then I wrote a lot of it out of order. Like, I wrote Liver before Wait/Hunt/Display etc. But I am fairly sure the first scene I put down, was a hatesex scene, because I wanted to explore what it would look like.

At the time I wasn’t thinking of writing a long story, I wasn’t thinking of writing a happy story (I didn’t ever expect Gwyn would get a happy ending, I knew he’d fall in love with Augus but always felt he’d be doomed by it), and I wasn’t thinking of writing beyond a few ‘never to be published’ scenes of hatesex to get a feel for the characters. So initially, the chapters I was writing were sex scene focused, and you know, oh well, character growth and development happened from there, lol.

Got my first reblog on a text post from an anti. They accused me of never reading Romeo&Juliet in my life (as my post was referring to the romeo and juliet parallels for karamel). They were basically calling me an idiot. Well that doesn’t fly with me so I hid the note and blocked them. I can’t actually believe I got an Anti given that I don’t really create content for the fandom, just text posts. Well, all I can say is keep coming at me if you wish, then I will just successfully block you all.

My favorite thing about the community here...

Is that we all support each other.

You kill a workout? Post a cute selfie? Have a shit day? Feel like a rock star? Had something really disappointing happen to you?

We’re there for each other. With a kind comment, a like, or reblog, whatever.

We support each other. And we succeed.

And I just think that’s super, super awesome. Love who you are and rock what you got, but don’t forget to extend the same to others :)

Your YOI portraits are so beautiful! The colouring is so soft and pretty. I really the flowers, too. Would you mind naming the types of flowers you drew?

Thank you!!! I’d love to share with you the names of the flowers I used:

Yurio - Crocuses
Victor - Fireweed (below) and the flowers above are from an image I have in my folder, never learned of its name OTL
Yuuri - Cherry Blossoms (top) Camellia (below)
Phichit - Cassia Fistula (it’s Thailand’s national flower)
Chris - Edelweiss (top) and the flower design below came from a Swiss traditional wear
JJ - Western Wood Lily
Otabek - Iris

I have to say that I enjoyed doing the portraits because of the flowers. It helped me familiarize each kind so the next time I paint them I wouldn’t just search ‘flowers’ when I have something specific in mind lol.

Hi, Pia! I'm reading your Fae Tales and loving it very much so far, the way your characters evolve and interact with each other is everything I crave in a story <3 So, my question is, if centers and heartsongs existed in the TGATNW-verse, what would you say would they would be for Jack and Pitch? (Maybe the Tsar too and other characters if the answer isn't too spoiler-y or annoying for you to respond)

So glad you’re enjoying the Fae Tales verse so far! That makes me so happy when people give it a try and get something out of it. :D

As for TGATNW and heartsongs oh my god, hmmm. Oh man that’s really hard, lol, because I haven’t thought about that at all here, except to loosely associate North, Bunnymund and Tooth with their centres, but very loosely.

And I can’t reveal the Tsar’s because that would be spoilery, but I’ll give it my best shot otherwise!

Jack Frost - Resilience or Endurance
Kozmotis (Pitch) Pitchiner - Loss and/or Determination
Bunnymund - Hope (for all that he’s a pessimist, lol)
North - Wonder
Toothiana - Memory or Observation
Anton - Compassion
Eva - Strength
Seraphina - Will
Jamie - Truth
Flitmouse - Fierceness

To all my writers out there, particularly fanfic writers because I am one and I’m feelin this hardcore

  • It’s okay that you haven’t written for a while, you can take breaks.
  • You can start writing again whenever you want, you don’t need an excuse.
  • If you would still like an excuse, here it is: I want you to start again, you should totally do it.
  • It’s ok if you’re out of practice, you’ll pick up traction again.
  • We’re all learners and its good to have role models, but try to be better than the writer were before, and try less to be ‘as good as’ someone else.
  • It’s alright to abandon a piece if you have no enthusiasm or passion left for it.
  • It’s okay to be needlessly dramatic.
  • It’s okay to be needlessly ridiculous.
  • Write the crackfic, write the rarepair, or write the popular pair. Write what you want to write.
  • Yes someone has probably written this scene before.
  • Write it anyway if you want to write it.
  • Yeah that trope has probably been done a million times.
  • Use it anyway if you want to use it.
  • Probably there are people who are tired of reading about that AU.
  • Write it anyway, they don’t have to read it.
  • Respect your audience, but don’t let other people dictate what you create.
  • Reblog your own work. Be proud of it. You deserve to pat yourself on the back.
  • I’m proud of you, you’re doing great.
  • Keep writing, keep making stuff. People will care.
  • Future you will especially care.

5. Into Shadows We Fall?

5: What part was hardest to write? // Into Shadows We Fall

This is actually easy to answer.

Chapter 4 - the sexual assault scene. It was crushingly hard to write, and for a long time, I couldn’t reread it. I couldn’t even reread it to refer back to it while answering comments for a while.

It was a mixture of the challenges of the scene itself (I worried a lot that people wouldn’t find Augus’ change of tack and his using comfort as a form of abuse valid - and honestly I did get like two or three comments/asks to that effect, though thankfully most people saw what I was trying to do and felt the impact), and also real life concerns about making the story that dark. I wanted to do it for myself, but I knew there would be some readers who wouldn’t stay through an event like that, and I questioned myself and second-guessed myself and grilled myself over it for ages.

For a long time I also went back and forth over how far things would go, too. I was pretty blocked on how much Jack should actually experience. I had to ask questions like: ‘what do I realistically think he can recover from in the length of the story? What am I trying to do/achieve? What will his PTSD look like? How will that intersect with Pitch?’ Idk, I angsted a lot over that scene, which meant I’d write two paragraphs and then have to walk away and grit my teeth over it for hours before coming back and writing another two paragraphs etc.

I reread it recently and I actually like the chapter. I mean I don’t like what happens, I just like how I executed it.

“this is perfect.”
