'About Love' Nabs Top Honors at Russia's Golden Eagles Ceremony

Anna Melikyan’s Pro Lyubov (About Love), a collection of romantic urban tales, was named 2015’s best Russian movie at the Golden Eagles ceremony, held Friday at Moscow’s film studio Mosfilm.

Stanislav Govorukhin collected the best director’s award for Konets Prekrasnoy Epokhi (The End of a Beautiful Epoch), set in the 1960s and based on a novella by renowned Russian 20th century author Sergei Dovlatov.

Alexander Mindadze took home best screenplay honors for Mily Khans, dorogoi Pyotr (Lovely Hans, Dear Peter).

Alejandro G. Inarritu’s Birdman was named the year’s best foreign film. It was nominated alongside James Marsh’s The Theory of Everything and Ridley Scott’s The Martian.

Yulia Peresild, the female lead of Bitva za Sevastopol (Battle for Sevastopol), was tapped as best actress, and Fyodor Bondarchuk was named best actor for his role in Prizrak (Ghost).

Veteran director Nikita Mikhalkov, who won an Oscar in the best foreign-language film category for Burnt by the Sun in 1995, received a lifetime achievement award.

The Golden Eagles were founded by Mikhalkov in 2002 as a rival to the older national honors, the Nikas. The awards courted controversy this week by attempting to establish a new prize named after late Soviet filmmaker Eldar Ryazanov, who died in November aged 88.

Ryazanov, considered one of the most popular directors of his generation, was a staunch supporter of the Nikas.

In Russia’s closely-knit film community — where there are two distinct groups that broadly fall into pro and anti-Mikhalkov camps, rival film unions and rival awards — the move, announced by leading film critic and Golden Eagles board chairman Kirill Razlogov, was seen as a boorish and insensitive attempt to capitalize on Ryazanov’s legacy.

The idea was dropped after complaints from filmmakers and critics, who suggested that if any event had the right to create such a prize, it was the Nikas, not the Golden Eagles.

Joyce to get consular support in UAE

Australia will support businessman Matthew Joyce and his family with “strenuous” diplomatic representations as he appeals a 10-year jail sentence and $25-million fine handed down by a Dubai court.

But Foreign Minister Bob Carr says while he has urged the United Arab Emirates to deal with the appeal quickly, the Australian government can’t fight cases for people in the courts of other countries.

Joyce was on Monday jailed and fined by the Dubai court for fraud stemming from a collapsed land deal.

But the court has cleared fellow Melbourne man Marcus Lee of wrongdoing, paving the way for him to return to Australia after four years trapped in the Gulf state.

The men were arrested in January 2009 over fraud allegations brought by Gold Coast property developer Sunland after the Dubai Waterfront deal collapsed during the global financial crisis.

They spent nine months in prison before being released on bail but were forbidden from leaving the United Arab Emirates.

Joyce says he’s shocked by Monday’s verdict.

“My family and I are still coming to terms with it,” he said in a brief statement.

“The most difficult part of today’s decision is that I’ve been convicted based on the evidence of a witness who was found by an Australian court to have lied.

"I will of course appeal this decision. I am innocent of the charges against me.”

The Victorian Supreme Court dismissed Sunland’s claims in June 2012 because their key witness was deemed untrustworthy.

Sunland appealed to the Victorian Court of Appeal, which is yet to deliver a verdict.

Senator Carr said the Australian embassy in the UAE would support the Joyce family through the appeals process and had made more than 40 representations to the UAE about the case.

“We can support the Joyce family with strenuous consular representations, especially about the indefensible amount of time this has taken,” he said.

“But the substance of the case has got to be a matter pursued by their legal representation.”

He spoke about the case and the amount of time it had taken with UAE foreign minister Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed Al Nahyan following the court’s decision on Monday. Both ministers are attending a conference in Doha.

The Dubai court also sentenced Joyce’s school friend Angus Reed to 10 years prison but it is understood he is currently in Australia. It is unclear whether the UAE will seek his extradition.

Joyce’s wife Angela Higgins was devastated by the verdict.

“Our family has been through so much over the last four years and today’s decision is much worse than I thought possible. Matt needs his family’s help now more than ever and we will be staying with him in Dubai to support him through the appeal.”

Mr Lee and his wife Julie were “overwhelmed” by his acquittal.

“It has been more than four years since this commenced and we are very grateful that the courts have uncovered the truth and we can now move forward,” they said.

It is understood prosecutors now have several weeks to appeal Mr Lee’s acquittal, meaning he will not be allowed to leave the country immediately.

If prosecutors decide not to appeal he can apply to have his passport returned.

Lee said his sole concern now is for the safe return to Australia of Joyce.

“I am devastated that while the Australian courts have conclusively documented our innocence, the Dubai courts have chosen to ignore revelations that the Dubai Prosecutor and Court have been repeatedly misled,” he said in a statement.

“I call on Australian government to work with the relevant Dubai authorities, so that Matthew can come home.”

Senator Carr was unaware whether Joyce was now in jail or under house arrest.
