Michael Marras’ visit to cantina La Guadalupana

The start of a personal project based on the Michael Marra song ‘Frida Kahlos’ visit to the Tay Bridge Bar’. In the song he imagines that Frida has gone to heaven only to find that the pearly gates have jammed and is asked by St. Peter if she wouldn’t mind retuning to earth and waiting in The Tay Bridge Bar in Dundee until they’re fixed.

I started thinking about this and what it would be like if Michael Mara had received a similar request but instead had been asked by St. Peter to wait in Cantina La Guadalupana in Mexico City.

I’m imagining Frida Kahlo there too and her running towards La Guadalupana, free from illness and a thousand vogue covers and both of them smoking*

*Please note that I have not been able to find any evidence that Frida ever visited La Guadalupana in Mexico City nor have I been able to find any proof that she ever visited The Tay Bridge Bar in Dundee.

There’s a live version of the song here and worth it for Michael Marras lovely introduction alone:

I’m basing the composition on traditional Mexican Ex-Votos painting, it must be the Irish Catholic thing but I love the whole idea of art as a votive offering, both religious and secular.

Also I’m imagining Frida Kahlo there too and her running towards La Guadalupana, free from illness and a thousand vogue covers and both of them smoking*
