Dudley Manlove served as announcer for Candy Matson. He had a long career as a radio actor and announcer. Though he made appearances on Dragnet and Alfred Hitchcock Presents on television, Manlove’s most famous (or infamous?) performance came as Eros in Ed Wood’s cult classic Plan 9 from Outer Space.
Visionary filmmaker Ed Wood would have been 88 years old today. This short film was a pilot episode for a never-realized Twilight Zone-like TV series called Portraits of Terror, and most of its footage was later awkwardly incorporated into Wood’s Night of the Ghouls (1959). Duke Moore, the gun-wielding detective from Plan 9 from Outer Space, plays an actor who wanders around an empty theater while some truly unfortunate narration by Dudley Manlove (the exquisitely-named actor who played the chief alien in Plan 9) assures us that everything is terrifying. The Duke Moore part was originally written for Bela Lugosi, and according to numerous unreliable sources, Lugosi died while reading the script.
