dubrovnik filming

Vanity Fair’s full spread and story is up! You need to go check it out, but here’s a quick rundown what we’ve learned: Laura Dern is Vice Admiral Amilyn Holdo of the Resistance, and Benicio Del Toro doesn’t get a name at all in the film – though they’re calling him DJ. (Seeeecretsss.) And yes, there are pictures of both. Kelly Marie Tran’s Rose Tico has a sister, Paige, a Resistance gunner, played by Veronica Ngo. And the planet filmed in Dubrovnik is indeed named Canto Bright. “I was thinking, O.K., let’s go ultra-glamour. Let’s create a playground, basically, for rich assholes,” director Rian Johnson said.

The article also includes some touching tributes to (and photos of) Carrie Fisher, so keep the tissues handy.

Interested to hear your thoughts on what they might be filming in Croatia! I can't see it being Snoke's lair.

Great question! I’ve done some snooping, and someone based in Dubrovnik has started a blog on the filming there that you can find here. Local rumours have indicated that the house pictured below (which is apparently located on the city’s main street) is one of the filming locations, and shooting is due to start there in four to five weeks. Since Dubrovnik has a very small population (approx. 50,000 people) news and rumours travel fast. For our purposes, of course, that’s brilliant.

I’m really not sure what Dubrovnik will be used to represent in-universe. It could be a base of First Order operations, it could be associated with the new character played by Benicio del Toro, or it could be some other location entirely. My gut is telling me it’s going to be where Finn and Poe meet del Toro’s character, but there’s no evidence to back that up yet. We won’t have long to wait until filming starts and I’ll keep people posted! There are probably going to be a fair few sneaky photos from the location filming, which should be really exciting.

Bonus pictures of Dubrovnik because it’s so damn beautiful:

I’ll throw this to the crowd - what kind of action do you see happening at this location? It’s obviously very beautiful and lends itself to all kinds of scenarios and set pieces. I’m curious to see what people come up with!

did you hear about rian johnson citing To Catch A Thief as inspiration for the romantic scale of episode 8. it's a new interview in the empire magazine that came out like an hour ago and i was doing some research and it turns out that To Catch A Thief is about a condemned/forbidden romance obviously this doesn't mean anything for reylo necessarily but it's still quite interesting considering the other films that johnson mentions like Twelve O'clock High

Yes, I did see that! It’s an exciting film for him to reference, though I doubt it has anything to do with Reylo or the Force strand of the plot. If anything, I expect it to be an inspiration for the action filmed in Dubrovnik.
