drive to alaska

This old truck has been in my life for the last 16 years, since I was 10. My sisters and I learned to drive in it, and it was our way to and from high school. This year I put 20,000 miles on it driving from Oklahoma to Alaska and back. Today my dad called and informed me that the back of the frame is almost completely rusted out and the rear end is starting to go. It might be a bit before Burt is back on the road, but here’s to all the good times that came from this thing, and to the good times with it in the future.

tobyharriman One of my favorites drives up here in Alaska is the trip from Anchorage to Valdez. It’s a beautiful six-hour drive that you can turn into a full day trip thanks to numerous stops along the way featuring mountains, wildlife and glaciers in just about every direction you look. One notable spot is in Thompson Pass known as the Worthington Glacier. It is a 5,774-acre valley glacier and is definitely worth a stop.
Thanks @avisalaska for helping make this road trip possible!

natgeotravel Video by @tobyharriman // Within a five or so minute drive outside of Anchorage, Alaska, you can be in some of the most incredible mountains. This particular area is a favorite of mine, and if you decide to drive a bit farther north to Hatcher Pass (which is a short hour or so trip), you will be treated to some of the most pristine landscapes in the area. From gorgeous roadside views to even more breathtaking scenes if you decide to backpack deeper in, it’s absolutely worth the trip. These #timelapse shots were taken over the past few weeks in 8K resolution. My favorite part: I love seeing the clouds and light playing with the mountains and valleys.

I guess I have a thing for transmission troubles and hot springs? 🛠🤒Or just blending the gritty with the charming? 🤷🏼‍♀️
Back in September we were driving down the Alaska Highway when we had to slow down for a herd of Bison. So cool. Then our transmission froze up and died right there. Serendipitously we were just down the road from Liard hot springs, located in a lush boreal forest with black bears scampering about. We soaked for several days before getting towed to the closest town, Fort Nelson, BC, 300 km away. Ouch.
Today as we left Spencer’s hot springs in Nevada, pulling onto the Loneliest Road in America we had an indicator light come on and when we hopped out we immediately smelled the leaking tranny fluid. It’s overheating and boiling out we assume.
Ugh. Geez, Nevada, I was so excited to put my new state sticker on our map. I’m a little conflicted about that celebration now.
But, all I can do is roll with it. Tranny should be under warranty, my brother lives close and I’m looking forward to seeing him and ….. it always works out. We just gotta keep on truckin. 🙏🚛🔮#life
