Trump administration working toward renewed drilling in Arctic National Wildlife Refuge
A draft rule would remove obstacles that have blocked exploration for decades in this vast Alaska wilderness.
By https://www.facebook.com/eilperin

The Trump administration is quietly moving to allow energy exploration in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge for the first time in more than 30 years, according to documents obtained by The Washington Post, with a draft rule that would lay the groundwork for drilling.

Congress has sole authority to determine whether oil and gas drilling can take place within the refuge’s 19.6 million acres. But seismic studies represent a necessary first step, and Interior Department officials are modifying a 1980s regulation to permit them.

The effort represents a twist in a political fight that has raged for decades. The remote and vast habitat, which serves as the main calving ground for one of North America’s last large caribou herds and a stop for migrating birds from six continents, has served as a rallying cry for environmentalists and some of Alaska’s native tribes. But state politicians and many Republicans in Washington have pressed to extract the billions of barrels of oil lying beneath the refuge’s coastal plain…

SAVE THE ARCTIC CAMPAIGN

-For the first time in 20 years, the Norwegian government opens a new frontline in the Arctic.

-Incineration of oil causes climate change, which is the cause of extreme weather conditions, and that people’s homes, health and families are at risk.

Millions of people already stand against oil drilling in the Arctic. Join or read more that savethearctic.org :)

Ps I do not hate Norway, (I love skam) but the polar bears die ffs. And btw sorry if this is badly written, english is NOT my first language. Ps again I don’t own this campaign or have anything to do with it other than I support it:)
Prevent climate change :)

Trump signs executive order to expand drilling off America’s coasts: ‘We’re opening it up.’
The measure will make millions of acres of federal waters eligible for oil and gas leasing, just four months after President Barack Obama withdrew these areas from possible development.
By https://www.facebook.com/eilperin

The assault on our environment, including our oceans, continues with this latest (i.e., today) Executive Order from trump. He’s starting in motion the process to reverse President Obama’s temporary and permanent bans, and the requirements for safety equipment imposed after the Deepwater Horizon spill. He’s also ordering a review of the marine sanctuaries created or enlarged by President Obama.

He will do anything to prove up to his supporters that his first 100 days will be the most productive period of time since the alleged 6 day creation effort by the Judeo-Christian-Islamic deity aka God. And we all know that this 100 day effort, if graded, wouldn’t even qualify for an “F.”

Excerpt:

President Trump signed an executive order Friday that aims to expand offshore drilling in the Arctic and Atlantic Oceans, as well as assess whether energy exploration can take place in marine sanctuaries in the Pacific and Atlantic.

The “America-First Offshore Energy Strategy” will make millions of acres of federal waters eligible for oil and gas leasing, just four months after President Barack Obama withdrew these areas from possible development. In late December, Obama used a little-known provision in the Outer Continental Shelf Lands Act to bar energy exploration in large portions of the Chukchi and Beaufort Seas, and a string of canyons in the Atlantic stretching from Massachusetts to Virginia.

Still, even Trump administration officials said it would take years to rewrite federal leasing plans and open up these areas to drilling. And global energy prices may deter investors from moving ahead with additional drilling in the Arctic Ocean in the near term, despite the effort to make more areas eligible for development.

Speaking to reporters Thursday night, Interior Secretary Ryan Zinke said it would likely take about two years to do a thorough review of what new areas could be put up for auction.

In addition to reviewing what drilling can take place off Alaska and the East Coast, the new directive charges Commerce Secretary Wilbur Ross to halt the expansion of any new marine sanctuaries and review the designations of any marine national monument established or expanded in the last decade. That includes Hawaii’s Papahanaumokuakea Marine National Monument, which Obama quadrupled in size last year, and the Northeast Canyons and Seamounts off Massachusetts.

And here’s a summary from the New York Times about trump’s order regarding off-shore drilling safety equipment:

Trump also took aim at regulations on oil-rig safety.

Last year, the Obama administration unveiled a set of regulations on offshore oil and gas drilling equipment, intended to tighten the safety requirements on underwater drilling equipment and well-control operations. In particular, the new rules tighten controls on blowout preventers, the industry-standard devices that are the last line of protection to stop explosions in undersea oil and gas wells.

The 2010 explosion of the Deepwater Horizon rig was caused in part by the buckling of a section of drill pipe, prompting the malfunction of a supposedly fail-safe blowout preventer on a BP well.

In which Dalek Over-analyzes a C:KND Episode

t Let’s talk about Operation: M.A.U.R.I.C.E.

While the spotlight is mainly on Abby, Cree and Maurice (duh), there’s also something most people would probably miss right at the beginning, during the episode’s flashback sequences.

First of all, there’s an awful lot of future KND brass in the same room, including no less than three future Supreme Leaders of the KND (274, 362 and 5). That’s a bit like looking at a yearbook and finding three consecutive Presidents.

The image is very blurry, but you can barely make out who’s who. At the front, we have Numbuh 86, followed by Numbuh 60 (right in front of Maurice), Numbuh 362, and 274.

Sadly, when camera pulls in, Numbuh 60 and 86 are just out of shot, but we are left with a nice shot of Maurice, Numbuh 274, who would become the next Supreme Leader after Numbuh 100 (who walks in right after him), and Numbuh 362, who took the job when Chad went “traitor”.

Another shot, this time of Numbuh 86, the future Head of Decomissioning and Global Tactical Officer. To the right, you can see Numbuh 60, the future Drill Sergeant at Arctic Base. And no, I don’t have any screenshots of his face from the flashback sequence, because it’s never shown until we’re back in the present.

Moving on.

Numbuh 86′s appearance is rather interesting for a few reasons. First, we learn that she was a medic before becoming Head of Decomissioning. Second, the boy-hating, jerk behavior we know her for is completely absent. Even her voice sounds softer, barring her entrance when she’s barking out orders. Granted, this could be because she’s in the presence of kids that out-rank the bejeesus out of her, but we’ll get to that in a future post.

Also, she’s wearing pigtails. Dawwww.

The previous scene pans to reveal a younger Numbuh 65.3, another member of the Moonbase crew.

Now, what does is tell us, you might ask? It tells us a very important fact about the KND at that point in time:

Back then, the KND was much, much smaller than the one we see in the show.
And, at one point, it must’ve exploded in size until it became the international organization we know of. In fact, it probably did so during the timeframe of the show itself. It started as a local organization based around the original Treehouse of Coolness, then found/built the Moonbase, and then expanded into the international, global NGO quasi superpower we know in the show. This is why all the brass up in Moonbase (that we’ve seen) are from the US: They were there first.

There’s more evidence. Look at this operation. It’s not a very big one. In fact, Sector V would regularly perform missions of a much larger scale than this completely on their own. And yet, the Supreme Leader, the highest authority in the KND, is there to personally oversee the results. That the leader of an organization that has a worldwide area of operation be present simply doesn’t make sense… unless said organization’s reach wasn’t that large yet.

You can actually see the KND’s growth through the show, simply by noting in what sort of situations the two next Supreme Leaders show up. Numbuh 274 appears during a false-flag operation that would’ve denied a very valuable resource to the enemy (Operation: U.N.D.E.R.C.O.V.E.R.) and to recover a rouge operative with sensitive Intel (Operation: F.U.G.I.T.I.V.E.). Numbuh 362 shows up to coordinate an attempt at containing an active volcano (Operation: H.O.T.S.T.U.F.F.), mount a defence against an assault on Moonbase (Operation: Z.E.R.O.) and authorize a strategic weapon strike against a giant tricycle (Operation: T.R.I.C.Y.C.L.E.). She’s also shown mounting a counter intelligence operation (Operation: G.I.R.L.F.R.I.E.N.D.) and participating in a diplomatic summit that would change the entire adult-kid war (Operation: T.R.E.A.T.Y.).

Another way we can see evidence of this explosive growth is by looking at how the KND is structured. There doesn’t seem to be anything between the individual sectors (of which there are many, even within a single country!) and Global Command in Moonbase. There’s very little evidence of middle management, which makes sense, as these are kids who would probably revolt at the idea. Thus, the responsibility of organizing all those sectors falls to the Supreme Leader, which is why poor Rachel has such a hard time of it in Operation: I.T.. The rank of Global Tactical Officer is probably a way for Numbuh 362 to lessen her workload by handing off some of her responsibilities.

And this has been it for me over-analyzing a C:KND episode! Next up, Why on Earth is Numbuh 86 such a jerk?

I demand

Riot grrrl maenads getting into ecstatic states in the pit. Grabbing intruding punk boys by their spiked collars and hurling them to the back of the audience.

Hekate’s hounds protecting protesters marching to commemorate those killed by racist, sexist, transphobic, homophobic, and classist violence. Their long shadows and yellow eyes scaring away the cops.

Shell abandons Alaska Arctic drilling
Oil giant’s US president says hugely controversial drilling operations off Alaska will stop for ‘foreseeable future’ as drilling finds little oil and gas
By Terry Macalister

What a good news on a Monday! Shell has abandoned all plans of drilling in the Arctic for now, as the results from their exploratory drill was disappointing and did not lead to the results they were hoping for.

I have written about offshore drilling a few weeks ago, so I happily welcome this news. If you’ve missed my posts:

Part 1: What is Offshore Drilling and Its Impacts on the Environment

Part 2: Arctic Drilling Plans, and the Need for Green Technologies

So by the way. Tonight I was printing some documents for some oil company thing. Some kind of info about arctic surveys or some shit, I don’t know. I didn’t look close at it.

I did glance at one part talking about how climate change is and will continue to affect certain aspects of arctic oil extraction in the future.

This wasn’t some crazy fringe environmental document, this was info about arctic oil drilling for an oil company.

So I just want everyone to remember that this weird rhetoric of climate change denial is like… it’s like religious people arguing that dinosaur bones are fakes put in the ground by Satan to test our faith. Climate change denial is crazy person bullshit.

Climate change is happening. You can debate all you fucking like about WHY it’s happening, but can we just fucking not? It’s happening so please can we all just fucking decide what we can do about it?

President Obama announced on Tuesday what he called a permanent ban on offshore oil and gas drilling along wide areas of the Arctic and the Atlantic Seaboard as he tried to nail down an environmental legacy that cannot quickly be reversed by Donald J. Trump.

Mr. Obama invoked an obscure provision of a 1953 law, the Outer Continental Shelf Lands Act, which he said gives him the authority to act unilaterally. While some presidents have used that law to temporarily protect smaller portions of federal waters, Mr. Obama’s declaration of a permanent drilling ban from Virginia to Maine on the Atlantic and along much of Alaska’s coast is breaking new ground. The declaration’s fate will almost certainly be decided by the federal courts.

“It’s never been done before,” said Patrick Parenteau, a professor of environmental law at the University of Vermont. “There is no case law on this. It’s uncharted waters.”

The move — considered creative by supporters and abusive by opponents — is one of many efforts by Mr. Obama to protect the environmental policies he can from a successor who has vowed to roll them back. The president, in concert with United Nations leaders, rushed countries to ratify the Paris Agreement on climate change, putting the multinational accord into force in record time, before Mr. Trump’s inauguration.

I’m sure there are more things, I’m just so emotionally exhausted now.

Today, I’m proud to change my profile photo to Barack Obama. This is my president! And I believe he is one of the best presidents in our history. By just about any measure, from jobs, to civil rights, from the environment to the economy - he has accomplished more any modern president. Here’s a greatly abridged reminder of some of his greatest hits:

He saved us from an economic disaster, taking unemployment from 10% to 4.6%.

He saved our auto industry.

He ended two wars.

Captured the man behind Benghazi, killed Bin Laden, got Syria to give up chemical weapons, and got Iran to give up nukes. All without a single American casualty.

He worked tirelessly, taking fewer vacation days than any president since Carter (less than half of what Reagan took and less than a quarter of what Bush took).

He deeply cares about individual Americans and is the first president to establish a system where he personally reads ten letters from citizens every day.

He saved millions of lives through the ACA, stopping discrimination because of gender or pre-existing conditions and letting young people continue to have health coverage under their parents. Now, more people are covered under insurance than ever in our history.

High school graduation rates are the highest they have every been in history.

We have had 82 straight months of job growth, the longest streak ever in the history of our country.

Business start ups are up 20% under Obama.

Wind and solar energy production under Obama is up 252%

He appointed the most diverse cabinet in history, promoting the equality of persons of color and women.

Grew private sector jobs by 11.6 million.

He protected waterways from coal mining, blocked offshore drilling in the Arctic & Atlantic oceans, and worked to create the Paris agreement with other countries to save our plant from climate change.

S&P 500 is up 157%

Highly dedicated to ethics and in 8 years not a single whiff of a scandal for him or his staff.

He reduced the student loan interest rates from 6.8 to 3.9%.

Obama made a concerted effort to help veterans and the result was homelessness among our veterans dropped by HALF! He increased money available for mental health care for veterans by a huge amount. He made regular trips to Walter Reed to spend time with wounded soldiers.

He conducted nuclear summits and convinced 16 countries to get rid of enriched uranium.

President Obama created a law to protect LGBTQ+ Americans from being fired just because they are gay. And he changed his mind and helped the nation embrace marriage equality for all.

Don’t Ask Don’t Tell was repealed so that gay, lesbian, and transgender soldiers could serve their country and not hide who they are.

Gas prices halved because he reduced our dependence on foreign oil.

He banned torture by US personnel in all circumstances.

He won the Nobel Peace Prize.

He re-opened relations with Cuba for the first time in decades.

He reduced the deficit from 9.8% of the GDP in 2009 to 3.2% in 2016.

He protected us all from banks using our money to make risky investments like the ones that caused the crash in 2008.

He helped women’s equality by opening combat positions to women and ensured that women who were already serving in these type of positions received equal pay.

He created the Dreamers Act to help undocumented immigrants who were brought here as children establish a path to legal residency.

He changed the policy that brought fallen soldiers back to the states in secret. Now, it is done so that the family can be there and he added to that law funds to pay all traveling expenses for the families.

I am proud to say I voted for this man twice (and would do it again if I could).

Portland, Oregon

July 30, 2015, 3:11pm: It’s a hundred degrees in Portland and there are thirteen activists hanging from the St. John’s Bridge.

Early yesterday morning, the climbers, equipped with several days worth of supplies, rappelled backwards off the bridge in a last-ditch effort to block the route of the Shell Oil vessel MSV Fennica — an Ice Breaker on its way to drill oil in the Arctic, despite the bugle call of environmentalists and the impending threat of climate change.

They hung there in the air for more than 24 hours, their crimson and yellow banners lilting and swaying in the river’s breeze — a brazen choreography of protest. Then, without a word or sound or declaration, the MSV Fennica reversed course.

Georgia Hirsty, one of the activists, sent a victorious missive from the air: “The sun is now setting on an incredible day of speaking truth to power and effective direct action.” As of the writing of this blog post, the thirteen renegades still hang mid-air from the bridge, like symbols of dissent, of power, of courage, of holding on to life with life.

Bernie Sanders Will Ban Fracking. Hillary Clinton 'Sold Fracking to the World'
Nothing illustrates the primary difference between Bernie Sanders and Hillary Clinton better than the following Huffington Post article by Brad Johnson titled On Eve of Caucuses, Clinton Rakes in F...

There is a an important reason why Climate Watch endorses Bernie Sanders for President.  While important, for sure, it is not his positions on minimum wage, college tuition rates, foreign wars, or single payer healthcare.  Climate Watch feels the Bern because he is the only candidate in either party who acknowledges that climate change is the number one threat facing the world, and the United States of America.

Among other things, Sanders would ban Arctic oil drilling, ban offshore oil drilling, ban fracking for natural gas, stop exports of liquefied natural gas and crude oil and put a moratorium on nuclear power plant license renewals in the United States.

Sanders also proposes hefty investments in several clean energy sources, including solar. He seeks to increase fuel economy standards for automobiles, build electric vehicle charging stations, invest in a “state-of-the-art” rail system and make U.S. cities more walkable.

Meanwhile, Secretary Clinton attended a gala held by a major fracking investor a week before the Iowa caucus.  Additionally:

According toReuters, “the Wall Street Journal reported that the Bill, Hillary and Chelsea Clinton Foundation and the Clinton Global Initiative have accepted large donations from major energy companies Exxon Mobil and Chevron.” Clinton’s foundations also accepted money from an office of the Canadian government linked to promotingKeystone XL.

Under her leadership, the State Department worked closely with energy companies to spread fracking around the globe – part of a broader push to fight climate change, boost global energy supply, and undercut the power of adversaries such as Russia that use their energy resources as a cudgel.

It is simple enough - on the most important issue in the world - the issue of Climate Change, Hillary has been consistently wrong, and Bernie has been consistently right.
