Lydia Edwards’ How to
Read a Dress covers nearly five centuries and makes quick work of some
complex sartorial times. Critic Genevieve Valentine says, after you read it, “Period-piece
TV will never look the same.”
This pineapple look has been a summer staple and I encourage every fat femme to go out and get yourself one! It’s a Cowcow dress from Amazon and it runs from x-small to xxx-large. I am wearing the 3x large and I am usually a size 28/30. These dresses stretch a lot so even if you don’t think you would fit into it, get one and try anyways! It is made out of very light jersey so it’s been a blessing in the summer.
Pineapple purse is from Torrid. (They’ve been making crossbody bags to fit fat bodies and I am so happy about it! The strap is 52 inches, I believe,)

‘Robbed a bank in this dress. Nodbody could agree on a proper description of me. Sketch artist’s head exploded. Got away. Fantastic.’
'I purchased this white and gold dress and was slightly sad when I recieved a black and blue dress. However, I know now that I got a great deal because if you stare at it long enough you can clearly see it’s a sailboat.’
'The good: Works equally well formal or business casual attire. The bad: Carves a crooked path through perceptual reality and leaves behind in a wake of confusion and existential crises. Also unforgiving on the hips.“
I just came from seeing the live action/ 2017 version of Beauty and the Beast. The original animated 1991 version is one of my favorite movies of all time, as well as it came out the year I was born (we’re both 26) AND the live action/2017 came out on March 17th (my birthday). However, I had been hearing that there was some concerns (the dress) and things that might not be handled well (LeFou being gay) but I still went to see if anyways.
I adored it. I think its probably the best live action adaptation of a Disney animated movie to date. IT FUCKING INCLUDES ALL THE SONGS FOR ONCE. Not only are they good/sound close to the original, there’s a couple original songs that also sound good and fit in the movie well.
LeFou I thought was handled well. He doesn’t die. I didn’t really pick up on the movie making fun of him/ blatantly using the trope, but I might not be the best person to pick up on it (being demisexual myself). And he gets an implied happy ending.
I recently reviewed the charming HOW TO READ A DRESS for NPR Books. It’s a little introductory if you already know your mantuas from your natural-form evening gowns, and sometimes you’re racing through time and space, since this book is only 200-ish pages and, well, history. (If you’re looking for non-Western-European styles, no dice; if you want to know the Why behind several of the trends, you’ll have to do your own further research - this is just a book that whets the appetite.) But Lydia Edwards has found some lovely garments, and poking around the details of old gowns is always the most fun part anyway.
These two examples from Bloomsbury’s marketing aren’t in the book, but you definitely get the idea.
AMERICAN PUBLIC SCHOOL STUDENTS, PLEASE HELP IN THE NAME OF CORRECTING INJUSTICE
Hi everyone, my name is Ariel, and I’m a law student in California. I’m on my school’s Law Review, which, for those who don’t know, is a publication of scholarly legal works. I’m writing a paper to submit to the publication, and I need your help.
Recently, there has been an immense increase in the news coverage about girls in schools getting disciplined for violating dress codes. Most of the time, it’s done in a sexist manner that sexualizes young girls’ bodies and it’s absolutely appalling. I’m writing my paper about the ways in which these practices can be attacked under the American legal system.
So here’s what I need. If you are or were a public school student in the United States (especially California, as that will be the focus of my paper but I do want as much of a national view as possible), please reblog this post with a link to your school’s dress code. And if you have any stories about specific dress code violations, I want to hear them!
I need to look at the codes themselves so I can attack the enforcement practices as specifically as possible. Another part of my paper is finding a way to fix this problem by devising a legal test for courts to apply in dealing with these issues. My paper will give a series of suggestions on how to take the issue to court, and my legal test will give a way to adjudicate the issue in the fairest way possible.
In the American legal system, this is how change happens. The goal is for me to get published to give lawyers ideas on how to tackle these issues, and to give the courts a test to adopt.
AND I CAN’T DO IT ALONE. PLEASE REBLOG WITH ANY INFORMATION YOU HAVE TO HELP. THANK YOU!!
Beauty And The Beast. I think everyone knows, how the story goes, but this was something. I can describe this movie with just one word: MAGICAL. This movie is pure disney magic. I had really high expectations coming to this movie, because Beauty And The Beast is my favorite Disney tale. And I’m so pleased with this movie. Don’t get me wrongl, there were still a few little mistakes, but if you don’t focus on them too much, you’ll definitely enjoy the movie, I did. I completely loved it.
Warning: Slight Spoilers
Let’s start with the cons, and those were mainy the “controversies” surrounding the movie. The LGBT LeFou, the dress and the reviews saying it’s too similar to the original. Let’s start with the LGBT Lefou. Gay LeFou is barely in the movie, he doesn’t even have that “great” scene that they were so promoting, there is actually nothing like that. It was a bit disappointing, because it just showed that they used it mainly for promotion. And his plot wasn’t that interesting. Then there’s the dress. I’m not a fan, but I do have to say, the way they introduce the dress is effin brilliant. Even though it’s a piece of trash compared to the original, the dance scene looked so gorgeous. And the reviews…I mean, it is a remake, what were you expecting? It’s the same story as the original, but it’s so much more mature. And they even answered some of the questions from the original, for example why don’t people remember that their prince is gone. And another small complaint is Gaston. He’s not the charming, self absorbed narcissist many people adore, he’s actually far more evil than the original. He’s like truly a villain. Some people don’t like this change, I’m actually quite a fan of the new portrayal.
Now to the pros, starting with the performances. Emma Watson as Belle delivers a jaw dropping performance, she truly is Belle. Everything about her character is just amazing, I didn’t know it was possible, but they improved Belles character so much. Next Dan Stevens as the Beast. Even though the CGI looked sometimes not real, he delivered a very good performance. The chemistry between Belle and the Beast was so much more improved from the original, with them having little fun and cute moments. Everyone else did also very good job, but the performance I have to higlight is Kevin Kline as Maurice, Belles Father. He was spectacular. They gave him a backstory and made his character much remarkable. His relationship with Belle is just beautiful. Next on to the songs. OMG, they were incredible. The reworked old classics plus the new songs, it truly felt like a musical, and I would’t be surprised if Disney would be interested in making one. My favorite was for sure the Belle scene. Everything was just perfect. Also the sets were completely enchanting. The castle, the village, even the forest, all looked so magical. And as I previously said, they made the movie much more mature, mainly in the main romance. And boy, they did a great job. The entire movie feels like a more sophisticated version of the original and I highly recommend you checking it out.
