Thanks @heretherebebooks for tagging me. It seems a little excessive to do this after an ‘anticipated releases’ post, but I’m a sucker for a good tag.
1. How do you keep track of your TBR pile?
In theory, through likes on tumblr – for instance, I bookmarked Peter Darling after I saw a cool aesthetic – and even more theoretically, on goodreads. In truth, it’s a jumbled list in my head that often results in me randomly seeing a book in a bookshop and thinking ‘damn, I meant to read that’.
2. Is your TBR mostly print or ebook?
It depends. I tend to ebook on the first read of a book because I have this dream of having a bookshelf filled with only my well loved books – like wall to wall shelves of only books I actually adore, where I can pick up anything on the shelf and know its amazing, rather than risking anything that’s ‘meh’. That being said, if that TBR is part of a series, it’s likely to be in print. And the issue with a kindle TBR is that you can always just forget it’s there, rather than it physically being there ready to be read.
3. How do you determine which book to read next?
I don’t plan this at all unless it’s an anticipated release, so it’s entirely dependent on my mood. If I was to characterise it, it depends on if I’m feeling ‘fluff/guilty pleasure’, ‘diverse rep’ or ‘challenging read’ – those seem to be my three main trends.
4. A book that’s been on your TBR list the longest?
I think Lord of the Rings. I got so much flack in my first year of uni because I’d never read them (and was studying English at Oxford, where Tolkien used to be a professor) and that’s like, damn….five years ago now?
5. A book you recently added to your TBR?
I Believe in a Thing Called Love by Maureen Goo (the only contemporary books I read have to be unabashedly geeky)
6. A book in your TBR strictly because of its beautiful cover?
Judging a book by its cover isn’t normally my jam but that’s the main reason I picked Heroine Complex by Sarah Kuhn up, so I guess I could say the same about Heroine Worship, which is on my TBR and has a super amazing cover.
7. A book on your TBR that you never plan on reading?
Ha! There are a few hangovers from my degree that are probably never going to get picked up - War and Peace springs to mind….
8. An unpublished book on your TBR that you’re excited for?
Provenance by Ann Leckie – I. AM. MOST. EXCITE.
9. A book on your TBR that basically everyone has read but you?
The Lies of Locke Lamora, at least in terms of my friend IRL. But…so few female characters…..
10. A book on your TBR that everyone recommends to you?
Jonathan Strange and Mr. Norrel – ‘but you love Austen’, ‘but you love faeries’
11. A book on your TBR that you’re dying to read?
At the moment it is a three way tie between Girl Mans Up, the next Wicked and the Divine and The Fallen Kingdom by Elizabeth May (my favourite guilty pleasure series that I am currently rereading and squeeing over)
12. How many books are on your TBR shelf?
117 according to goodreads, but a lot of them seem to be alternative editions to books I have actually read, or books that haven’t been released yet. Not counting upcoming releases (and let’s not, because then I’ll cry) I would say probably 10-20 books?
