drawing with colors on the 3ds

anonymous asked:

Your fundamental skills seem to be really polished. Did you do studies to get to that level? And if so, what kinds of studies did you do?

I did many many many many many studies. It’s the whole gamut - anatomy, perspective, color theory, painting, life drawing, observational studies, etc. If you want to draw ‘academically,’ then my best advice is to study drawing cubes and boxes in space. Learn how to rotate 3-dimensional objects in your head and how to visualize said 3D shapes on paper.

laserdisccompatible  asked:

I really like the way you are can use large, flat-coloured forms into your designs and still give them the feeling of being 3D objects with texture and weight. It reminds me of Kazuma Kaneko's work (the Shin Megami Tensei illustrator).

Thank you :) His art is really nice to look at in both color and design. I really need to study them more. My background is in drawing so it’s what I focus on the most. Even before adding color I do my best to make sure that the form and perspective in my drawings make sense visually. Line weight also plays a big part where I make the lines thicker in parts where the light might not be as prevalent.

If any of the links have any issues for whatever reason, HERE’S THE LINK TO THE SAME LIST I COPIED TO MY DA ACCOUNT JUST IN CASE;

http://ladyevel.deviantart.com/journal/Mega-List-for-Boredom-and-Inspiration-577571203

I was trying to answer an anon about my process for drawing hair and I realized I don’t have much of one.  What I do try to do, though, is create movement and an interesting shape.

Planes: Sections of hair that I draw like a wide noodle with a defined top and underside.  I use it to frame the face and create movement.

Volumes: Sections of hair that look kind of lumpy and 3D as opposed to the plane.  I use it on the sides and back of the head to give the illusion of weight.

I’m not quite happy with the way I color hair yet and a lot of my drawings are experimentation, so I’ll leave that for another time.  I hope this helped a little :)

anonymous asked:

Hi there! Sorry if this seems silly, but your style is a big inspiration to me, and i've started first year in animation. I was wondering would you have any tips for it? :) we're being taught a good bit, but it's a bit overwhelming trying to figure out a way to make anatomy and perspective work. If you don't have tips thanks anyway, and again, love your work!

Ahhh thank you so much your words mean a ton seriously thank you.

ALRIGHT WELL ILL DO MY BEST

First of all. Welcome to animation. You’re gonna lose your mind. Because animation tends to do that. You’ve probably already figured that out. Most people dont end up level headed after working 40+ hours on something that stays on screen for 1-5 seconds. It’s alright. No biggie. OKAY SO

I’m not the best at teaching things. But I know resources that are.
FIND PDFS IF YOU CAN OF THE FOLLOWING BOOKS:

The pdf’s are actually pretty widely available. do a little gaggling you’ll find em trust me. AND READ THEM. i personally enjoyed all of em.

NEXT:

  • 11 Second club: list of animation exercises <—- YOU SEE THIS?
    YOU SEE THAT LIST OF THINGS TO ANIMATE? DO ALL OF THOSE THINGS. ALL OF THEM. dont just read it and scroll thru it and go “kay”, bookmark it, and move on. NO. Every week. Animate one of those things. Get feedback on each of those things. Feedback from your teachers, from your friends, from your peers, from your dog, from a rubber duck. Then make changes. THEN CONTINUE TO ANIMATE ALL THOSE THINGS.

  • PINTEREST BOARD STRAIGHT FROM THE ART GODS THEMSELVES: Character Design Reference <—-goodness where do i start with this. Everything is here. Character sheets. Color keys, Stylization, illustration, reference for animation, anatomy, the kitchen sink, VIS DEV OF THE KITCHEN SINK. This is how I check to see how far I am from being industry ready. This is how I keep myself motivated. This is how I surround my self with art that is much better than what I produce so that I keep improving. Do studies of the things here. Pick a character sheet, do a study of it, and throw that study away and burn it. Then do another. No drawing is precious. Frames, drawings, sketches, all temporary. With good reason.
  • AUTODESK MAYA, 3DS MAX AND MORE: free for students.
    You see that? Free. Like. FREE FREE. As in, this is how you get maya as a student. This is how you have access to a two thousand dollar program and learn how to use it. If you havent yet, get it. Maya animates cg stuff. Get to it kiddo.

———-

  • General tips:
  • Arcs. Many times the reason your animation isnt working is because your arcs are broken. Find them. Fix them. ARC THE CRAP OUT OF YOUR ANIMATION.
  • Nothing is precious. Animation is essentially a slaughter fest of drawings/frames that dont work. Kill all of them. Distance yourself from your drawings like a warlord hellbent on taking over the goddamn universe and embrace it. If you like a frame that much you can turn it into an illustration later. You’ll be better off for it.
  • Learn 2 storyboard. You’d be surprised how well learning how to frame a shot helps with your animation. Heck, sometimes when I storyboard I animate out my key drawings on accident but IT WORKS AND ITS GREAT. Good framing can help a shot loadsss.
  • Dont be afraid of 3D tools to help. Maya, google sketchup, heck even blender, if you cant figure out how to move something thru space chuck a sizable equivalent model into 3d and move it in space and use it to help. It’s not cheating it’s being practical.
  • DO GESTURE AND FIGURE DRAWING EARLY, OFTEN, AND WILLINGLY. Build up a library of poses and work out all the kinks of anatomy while sketching so when it comes to actually animating youve already worked out all the details. And kick fore-shortening’s butt into the next dimension.
  • Finally, for goodness sake enjoy yourself. Not many people can create life and summon a living, breathing character without giving birth first so freaking enjoy it and GET STUFF MOVING YA CHUMP I BELIEVE IN YA

anonymous asked:

Hi. I was wondering if you had any tips for drawing backgrounds. Yours look so good! Also, I really like your art style and am excited to read Protean Sea when it comes out. : )

Here are my general tips (for the record I am still learning all these things) :

 1. Learn the basics of perspective

Book Rec: Perspective Made Easy - Norling

2. Learn how light works.

Rec: Color and Light: A Guide for the Realist Painter

3. Learn some basic 3d modeling so you can put cubes in an environment to frame your shots (really helpful to learn perspective and light before this step)

You can also make cardboard models or take pictures of rectangular things to establish some vanishing lines. Have a human scale established before you do this. Here’s my body-kun being dramatic

4. Gather a ton of research photos. Go deep, learn your environment. Learn how buildings are made. People always draw walls too thin.

5. Practice! Backgrounds are really hard D:

Some Tips On Organic Chemistry
  1. When you’re looking at two compounds and wondering how they may react, pay attention to the carbons - if they are bonded to a halogen or something more electronegative than them, then they have a partial positive charge and they’re going to want anything that will give them more electrons (a.k.a. a nucleophillic attack). If they’re bonded to hydrogen, they have a partial negative charge and they become your nucleophile, which will want to give those electrons to something that’s lacking them. Once you get these basics down, mechanisms become much easier to memorize because you can see the logic in them and sometimes predict them.

  2. Get the basic mechanisms ingrained in your brain. Think of SN1, SN2, E1 and E2 as your new multiplication table. Make flashcards about them and take them to class. Or put them at the back or front of your notebook. Just have them handy at all times.

  3. Draw the final steps in 3D. ALWAYS. You can draw the mechanisms and the first steps in 2D because it will make it easier to understand, but never forget that you’re working with a 3D structure that can flipped (and attacked by nucleophiles) every which way. Also, if you don’t know the basic perspectives used in orgo (Fischer, Newmans, sawhorse, wedge-dash) please take half an hour to learn them. Mainly wedge-dash and Fischer, but Newman is very useful when deciding which position you should put your atoms in if you’re dealing with sin and anti.

  4. Colors. If you’re one of those people who ONLY writes in black pen, awesome, keep using it for WRITING. For reactions though, you’re going to want options. you’ll need to differentiate between:

    • The molecules (same color for atoms and bonds, unless you want to finish your notes on your deathbed).
    • Your three types of arrows: electron flow, actual steps in the reaction (think intermediates) and steps you may take to make it clearer for you but that happen at the same time.
    • Formal charges
    • The electrons that stay with its original atom and the ones that are given/shared, if you’re like me and you like your mechanisms to be spelled out.
    • This is not an excuse to go nuts with the coloring, 3 colors are enough. Personally, I use purple for molecules, electrons and reaction arrows, black for electron flow arrows and charges and light blue for clarification step arrows. Also optional but to denote a homolytic fission I usually write a blue line perpendicular to the bond. Similarly, if two atoms share one electron each, instead of just one them donating both electrons, I link said electrons with blue.
    • Remember to be consistent, otherwise you’ll end up like me, looking at your notes from the beginning of the semester and wondering if that dash is a bond or a -1 formal charge (to avoid this, preferably circle formal charges. Lol I never do this but I should).
  5. Flashcards are so helpful! Write the reactants on one side and the mecanism and products on the other. Test yourself until you are one with the electrons.

  6. If it’s a concerted mechanism, number the arrows. You’ll thank yourself a month from now.

  7. Khanacademy. Khanacademy will save your butt when it comes to mechanisms. Chemwiki is likely to have anything that Khanacademy doesn’t. If it isn’t in either of those, Google images just became your new best friend. Books also tend to explain those nicely but I personally find them to be poorly structured and they usually include much more info than what you’ll actually be requiered to know. If you have the time to read two pages on a reaction though, by all means go for it.

  8. Study in advance. Good luck studying for your final two days before if you don’t understand the mechanisms and you don’t have your material organized. Seriously, don’t do it. A week before the exam you could make those flashcards mentioned above. They’re a great way to review but it will be impossible if you are learning these things from scratch.

  9. Get your hands on past tests. This goes for any subject but especially for orgo. Try to get a past test or at least ask an upper-classman who’s taken orgo with that professor. Does his/her tests focus on mechanisms? Retrosynthesis? Or does he/she give you the reactants and ask what the product is or what environment they should be in to obtain x? Ideally, you should be able to answer any of these if you know the material. However, if they focus on retrosynthesis, it may be a little tricky, so make sure to cater your study techniques to that.

  10. You should also check out @colllegeruled’s Surviving Organic Chemistry, it’s super helpful and it has lots of resources (seriously, you introduced me to Khanacademy, I OWE YOU MY LIFE).

So, this is what I can offer so far. I hope it shines at least a faint light into the dark path that is organic chemistry.

Q&A saturdays! <3

Thank you everyone for the asks! <3

Out of the ocs I have shared, Garrett and Dario are the only gamers I think! Although they only really play competitive games like Mario Kart, Splatoon, or Smash! Garrett is also a sucker for mobile games and Kathy is too!

Garrett LOVES taking Snapchat of his boyfriend! <3 He takes quite a few throughout the day and makes sure to send it to him too!

Meet Cabby/Cathy! They’re an excitable nerd who wants to protect their friends! <3

It was a LOT of fun working on these!

Garrett’s backstory can’t even be shared yet! Y'all will have to wait until their lore/story/webcomic comes out! </3 Sorry about that!

Here’s a short version of how I do inkling hair! <3 I’ve done this sort of thing before but not in this new style so hope it helps!

Aaaaa thank you for the compliment! ; v ; I’m not really sure what to say, I just recommend working with shapes or researching body types! <3 Work with colors, archtypes, and even focus on silhouette of the each character! Make sure they’re all unique in their own way! As for the height different, it’s a little harder to explain, I just kind of decide where their heads should be and then draw the rest of them ; v ;

I actually just use the standard pen brush for lineart and coloring, nothing fancy! <3

I do most of my comic/picture sketches on my tablet, but I do like to sketch on my notebooks too! I just don’t ever think anyone’s really interested in them! ; v ;

AAA! Please @ me, I would love to see it! ; O ;

Thank you sO MUCH! I’M REALLY GLAD <3 <3 I hope you continue to enjoy my blog!

Omg! No, I havent! I used to have it before it was closed down (still saved to my 3DS actually) and aaaa I would love to get back into it but I’m not sure, I might not have enough data sobs ; v ; /)

That’s all the asks I can answer for today! Thank you for all the questions! Sorry it was late and I hope you enjoyed this, it was was a lot of fun to do! Please don’t hesitate to send me more to answer next time and see you all next Saturday! <3

Thanks for reading! Bye! Love you all and have a lovely weekend!! <3
