Here’s a racist drawing from Dr. Seuss

In the four-panel drawing titled “Cross-Section of The World’s Most Prosperous Department Store,” the artist depicts scenarios in which rich men can purchase items to make their lives more difficult.

These include a fly for your ointment and a monkey wrench for your machinery. The final and largest panel features a crowd of men rendered in classic blackface caricature, with dark skin and pronounced red lips, being presented to a white shopper. A sign reads: “A nigger for your woodpile.”

One Particularly Upsetting And Racist Dr. Seuss Cartoon Is Heading To Auction

By Priscilla Frank

Most of us know Mr. Theodor Geisel, also known as Dr. Seuss, for his classic children’s characters like Yertle the Turtle and the Cat in the Hat. However, before his reign as king of kids’ lit, Seuss contributed some disturbing and rather racist content to a conservative satirical magazine called Judge.

One particularly upsetting image from this period is currently headed to auction: a hand-drawn, hand-painted illustration that dates back to 1929. Titled “Cross-Section of The World’s Most Prosperous Department Store,” the illustration features “three panels which show men at a department store picking out various merchandise to make their lives more difficult.”

This awesome structure is a house located in the southern wilds of Alaska, somewhere between the areas known as Willow and Talkeetna. According to locals, the original owner built the bottommost level shortly after a forest fire, which meant the house had an unobscured view of Denali/Mt. McKinley. As the forest surrounding the house recovered, the owner’s view was obstructed by trees, so he simply added more levels to stay above the canopy. And then he just kept right on building. The unusual appearance of this towering home has earned it the delightfully apt nickname of the “Dr. Seuss House.” It was abandoned for years, but now has a new owner who is renovating the property.
