Douglas C. Engelbart, inventor of the computer mouse, dies at 88

New York Times: Douglas C. Engelbart, inventor of the computer mouse, died at his home on Tuesday in Atherton, California. He was 88. His wife says the cause was kidney failure.

In December 1968, Engelbart unveiled some of the technology he’d been working on while at the Fall Joint Computer Conference in San Francisco. He sat on stage in front of a mouse, a keyboard and other controls and projected a computer display on a video screen behind him. He showed how a mouse, which he had invented four years earlier, could be used to control a computer.
