have a caboose & donut college au snippet because why the fuck not?
Donut clicked through the folder, frowning at the photos. A picture of him, strained smile half-hidden by a plaid collar. One with his parents, in front of the dorm. Only his mom was smiling. One the night he met Kai, his shoulders hunched in a totally gross-looking raincoat. There was a noise behind him, and then Caboose plopped down on the bed. “Oh, Admiral Buttercrust! It is you from freshman year!”
“Yeah.” Donut sighed.
Caboose wiggled closer. “Uh, Donut? You do not sound happy.”
Caboose wiggled closer still. “But Private Poppin’fresh, you are very cute in those photos. Don’t you like being cute in photos?”
Donut sighed again. Caboose took it as an invitation to wiggle all the way up against Donut’s side. “Yeah, Caboose. But this was me before I met you guys. And I wasn’t… happy, like that. I wasn’t me.” He skips forward a few photos, where the smiles start getting more real. There’s the first one with Tucker, snapped during lecture when the professor had her back turned. In the caf with Wash, seconds before Tucker and Kai slapcammed them.
Caboose hmm’ed. He reached forward and batted Donut’s hand away from the trackpad. He ignored Donut’s noises of protest to skip backward in the folder. He stopped on a familiar photo, one that made Donut’s heart pang. It was the first photo of both of them, taken in the dim lighting of the library stacks. Even in the bad light, Donut’s smile is as wide as Caboose’s - and less noticeably, Caboose’s cheeks are wet. “That is the Donut who saw people being mean to me and yelled at them until they left.” Caboose bumped his shoulder against Donut’s. “I think I like that Donut very much.”
